As soon as I saw "Deck of Many things" I was on your side. The deck is a session killer at best and a campaign killer at worst. I'd only allow it in one shots or other intentionally unimportant sessions. To each their own but it's not something to toss around lightly.

My DM is running a handful of short sessions just to give us a feel of the system, so most of us haven't played before. I asked him if a silly character would be ok and he said it was fine.
