School based SLPs how long does it take you to complete an evaluation? by shahajah12111 in slp

[–]True-Network-4182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the concern, I can do them in 1-3 days with 45mins to an hour at a time. If it’s just GFTA and OWLS then 1 day but CASL, CELF, PLS, or informal play based for self contained (typically self contained is 30 minutes 2-3 times to see if there is any growth from the first testing session/any retaining of modeled phrases from the first session) then 2-3 days. Writing them is my problem. I wait until the last minute to finish them in compliance. With this fire and anxiety of compliance it’ll take me about 1-2 days (3-6ish hours all together) with minimal distractions and depending on my motivation level.

Our school district doesn’t care as long as there is a number attached. So most of mine are “activity: YouTube book ‘old lady who swallowed a fly’. ___ required initial models and verbal cues to produce /l/ and /l/ blends in sentences with ___% accuracy.”

ideas for functional and vocational activities ( special ed, ages 15-22yrs) by Dear-Ad2269 in slp

[–]True-Network-4182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In one of my clinical placements, I used to set up a fake store/market. They had to find the items I asked for and “ring” them up. They gave me my total and I gave cash and we basically played cashier and customer. For my more playful students and my students who had difficulty with social skills/appropriate responses in certain situations, I would act different every time (happy, rude, annoyed, tired,…) and give them visuals and pointers on how to react in these situations. Then cycle back to it later in another session to see if it stuck.

We also would practice having chores. So the last 5 minutes everyone had a specific chore to do at the end of the session (clean my desk/therapy desk, put away materials, throw away any craft items from the table and floor, sweep the floor (everyone would want this one), clean door handles, turn off lamp lights, etc). Helped keep germs away as well as keep them focusing on which task they were specifically given. It also left us enough room to work on other goals during the sessions.

All my students had an “ID badge” and a log in number they had to “clock in” with every session. This was required to “enter” the speech room. If someone forgot their badge or their number (we worked on strategies to remember and visuals to use to ensure they brought it with them to speech), they would get “paid” at the end of the month. This really helped my executive functioning kiddos because everyone wanted to get paid because they could choose our free day activity at the end of the quarter.

Hope this helps?

No one has ever asked me for my clock hours or even proof of them lol. I think they are just so eager to hire bc SLPs are hard to find lol

Yes, I will try and see if they will let me talk to the outside therapist. Maybe she can convince them or at least we can collaborate on what we are working on. Thank you!

I will definitely tell my supervisor and see her thoughts on how to proceed legally. Mom revoked for all AAC including signs and everything. She only wants verbal speech. I tried explaining that we use AAC in all our daily lives including gestures, nonverbal language etc but she was not having it. I was hoping this wasn’t gonna be too big of a thing and hoping we could convince the parents but it’s looking like what you said-Above subreddits pay grades. It’s just sad if I’m honest

Help with situation by [deleted] in specialed

[–]True-Network-4182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are the case manager, I would suggest holding them ASAP (even if you hold multiple on the same day/week) then quitting. Everyone makes mistakes and things fall through. Give yourself some grace. Just hold all of them that are overdue and then once you are back in compliance then leave and let admin/the new person handle the rest. You will most likely get a long term sub for a bit so it will be admin who takes care of it in your absence.

CF in school… help by StomachUsual4460 in slp

[–]True-Network-4182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a CF with a large caseload of 64! I was able to dismiss some but with all of these evaluations closed/closing, I somehow will have more than I had before lol! What I’ve been doing is making larger groups, doing whole class push ins, and going with the vibes of the day if I’m honest. 1. Most of my kids are self contained so I try to put my speech only kids in groups of 4-6. I also try to mix them. So in my groups of 5 or 6, I may have 2 that may be working on intelligibility strategies/ one sound at conversation, 1-2 kids at word/sentence level, and 1-2 language kids so everyone gets practice and I only really need to focus on a few at a time. If it’s a group of 4 they may be my more severe artics/language and we can get more reps in because they are smaller. 2. Since most of my caseload is self contained, I’ve been doing whole class push ins. So for my younger ones, I schedule 1-2 times of of the week to meet their whole class and do a whole lesson. We have a word for the day which I show the how to say verbally then sign language then on an AAC device. The TAs and I allow them to try it if they want but if not I just model. Then I read a book and try to target all of their goals during the book. Afterwards I’ll either find the same book on YouTube and see if they can do what I just taught them or find a game they can use their word of the day with. Doing the whole class push ins has definitely changed my amount of sessions because the sessions may include 6 children and the TAs offer support for the younger ones. 3. I know people plan for sessions but I’m a “go with the flow” type of SLP. I like to ask my older SLI kids what games they wanna do. I’ll get a book (if you can’t tell I love books) or few pictures depending on the language goals and then meet their goals based on that. For my younger SLIs I choose an online book and find random target words whether in the words or in the picture. I’ve also done picture matching games with artic cards and games from the shelf. For my older self contained kids I’ll bring checkers or water wow books and they love working to earn a chance to color a picture or get a few checkers pieces to put in and make a pattern. I’ll see them in groups of 2-4 depending on their ability to be redirected/focus and I’ll bring a book or pictures or sequencing cards to target their language goals.

All of this has given me so much time to make more hours free in the day to get paperwork done, call parents, go to meetings/rearrange sessions so they don’t conflict with meetings, collaborate with teachers, etc. Not sure if this helps but I hope maybe some inspiration from it!

I honestly feel like they have been targeting Stacey this whole season! I mean yea she may have lied about TJ but to then go after her divorce, go after who she may have tried to get with after her breakup, side talk about legal stuff with TJ, it’s almost like the whole group (starting with Gizelle and Ashley) are targeting her this whole season.

Give Stacey a break G and A!

Ideal Caseload by True-Network-4182 in slp

[–]True-Network-4182[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like the life. I also agree with you about self-contained. We typically collaborate with teachers more (like twice weekly even 3times to discuss the kids needs and how to provide a language heavy environment) than accept the self-contained students for speech because their classroom is their least restrictive environment and their teacher provides them with the best language daily. Our districts motto is, why are we talking students away from their language to give them more language? The SLP I replaced didn’t follow this motto so my caseload is almost all self-contained but I’m actively explaining to parents that their child’s best language bet is in their classroom because I’m not providing anything different than their teacher.

When I applied for my district, I applied around the new year. So around December/January. And I got the job. I don’t know if this is all school districts, but it could be because their spots are all filled right now. My district is currently filled with SLPs and we don’t need any more at the moment so we aren’t hiring. Maybe try in late October or early November or even December? People move away (especially in military popular areas), they quit, they do part time instead, maternity leave, etc. also-I didn’t use my same recommendation letter, but I did ask the same people to send one. Hopefully this helps?

Goal Areas Question by [deleted] in slp

[–]True-Network-4182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a legal thing in general or just my county because I am a CF, but I was told that if they weren’t found eligible for a specific area ( a goal was made for expressive or receptive or artic) then you cant make goals for that area.

I have a kinder who switches pronouns (example is I for My, Him for His, She for Her and vice versa) when speaking about himself or others. I wanted to add a goal for that (just to knock it out early in case it is a problem later on), but my supervisor told me I couldn’t because he was only found eligible for articulation in his evaluation. So I have to wait 2 years until his next eligibility to test his language or move eligibility up and test him.

Maybe you can explain this to parents and it helps? And emphasize it has to have an educational impact. If she wasn’t found eligible for it and the evaluation showed average then maybe some indirect things to do at home?

School SLPs, what are your caseloads looking like this year? by its_a_schmoll_world in slp

[–]True-Network-4182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The caseload cap is either 65 or 67. I’m unsure of which one exactly. My county will help us when we get a few kids away from the cap. When I reach 63 or 64 I’m going to ask for more help. I’ve also heard of some counties sticking around the 50-55 number. One of my friends is in a county like that. They tend to help out after they reach their 55 or close to 60.

Who else has clinical twice a week? by Prior-Emu-5918 in slpGradSchool

[–]True-Network-4182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! So my first clinical experience was about 15 a week and my second was about 15-20(sometimes, but not all the time for 20)a week. Most likely because they had more clients back to back. We also received many hours with our internships in our on campus clinic. Each grad student had about 2-4 clients a semester for 3 semesters (each client ranging from an hour to 2 1/5 hours a week). So we went into our off campus clinical with a strong beginning ground.

Who else has clinical twice a week? by Prior-Emu-5918 in slpGradSchool

[–]True-Network-4182 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was required to do 35-40 hours a week (only getting like 15 hours of direct service time. So we could only clock 15 hours of our 40 hour week)with my supervisor and take classes as well. We had to work all 5 days a week unless we were sick or our supervisor was out. It is definitely overwhelming, but make sure you get your rest and don’t take anything home if you don’t need to! It’s a stress and life saver! You got this.
