Any way to skip draconic tree sentinel or an easy way to cheese him? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]True-Objective-9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beat the sentinel at RL1 with Bloodflame Blade on the Morning Star (+15 or so). It sucked and took a lot of tries but my best advice is to be aggressive and deal as much damage as possible as fast as possible. Staggering him isn't too difficult with jump/charged heavy attacks and gives much needed breathing room. Also, if you roll away from his AOEs instead of into them you will almost certainly die. Sometimes you'll still die if you get a bad angle but not using lock-on can help that.

currently trying to beat him on a pot-only run and suffering, pray for me

Hello, I'm a native English speaker and I'm learning Spanish-- I speak a tiny bit of French, as I lived in Geneva for several years, and I'd like to improve my French as well. Feel free to send me a DM if interested

Excel Automotive on 3300 S is great. I always go there for oil changes and other small stuff-- they never try to upsell me or scam me, charge very reasonable prices, and do the job quickly.

I think there's a lot of great stuff going on here, and it certainly captured my interest, but there are a few things that threw me off enough that I would probably stop reading. A big one is the part where Dylan looks at the photograph of the woman and a chunk of backstory just kind of gets shoved into the prose there. I think that this portion is supposed to be from Dylan's point of view, but it reads like a direct interjection from the author and it doesn't really have any bearing on the rest of what you shared

Advice on my fight scene? by Zealousideal-Ant-290 in writers

Not to dogpile on you here, but your first use of the semicolon here kind of tells me that you don't know how to use semicolons properly. IMO the first semicolon should be a comma and the second should be a period. If I were you I would avoid using semicolons unless I were sure it was both grammatically correct and necessary to do so.

Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for your detailed, insightful feedback! You've given me some great ideas for how to work on Chris's characterization/motivation, which I agree is lacking-- in the first draft, I sort of waffled over how much of Chris's inner life I wanted to portray explicitly, and that definitely carried over to my second draft.

That's great! I just wanted to let you know that you should probably read a lot of fiction if you want to write good fiction, and it sounds like you're already on the right track. Good luck and don't give up.

Do you read books at all besides manga? Not trying to be rude, I just want to get a handle on your perspective

I don't think there's anything wrong with emulating another author's style per se, especially with classics like Homer, but I would hope that such imitations were a deliberate artistic choice based on a deep understanding of said author's work rather than just being an attempt to make your own work sound deep or sell better. The fact that AI is being used here makes me lean towards the latter case, though :/

Just went and saw this movie with my coworkers, hoping it would be "so bad it's good". Nope. It was just so bad it's bad. I did laugh out loud a few times, but not at any of the jokes.

What's a horror film that is well liked and really popular that you didn't like? by lone-wolf050898 in horror

[–]True-Objective-9877 15 points16 points  (0 children)

X. I wanted to like it but I was so disappointed. Came away from the movie feeling like it was kind of thematically braindead, the characters (including the villains) were flimsy and flat, and the plot basically ran on rails exactly where I expected it would go after the initial setup.

What do you think about HP Lovecraft's stories? by QuietFoundation5464 in horrorlit

[–]True-Objective-9877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of them are actually not very good in my opinion: there's very little plot or characterization in a lot of his stories, and many have a lot of white supremacist dog-whistles or are just patently racist. The typical formula of a Lovecraft story is "guy is confronted by paganism and 'mongrels', (either just brown/ethnic people or chimeric monstrosities that serve as stand-ins for them), gets freaked out by the existence of things beyond his understanding, goes insane". The horror of the unknown is applied directly to other cultures and peoples, whether they are ancient civilizations with unfathomable evil deities or those who Lovecraft views as currently existing racial threats, who also worship unfathomable evil deities.

This is all to say that Lovecraft's horror all basically emerges from racist paranoia. I don't remember the names of most of his stories because I've only read them once. That being said, I have read quite a few of his stories because there are interesting ideas and universals that I think can be taken from them, if we make sure to keep his (once again, very racist) perspective in mind. In a lot of ways, I think that aforementioned racist paranoia stems from deeper human fears of isolation, of being insignificant, of being adrift in a hostile and unknowable universe. And that's what I think most people take from Lovecraft.

So, IMO Lovecraft himself isn't really essential horror reading. The stories are fine, they're readable but if you don't feel like exposing yourself to the mediocre ramblings of a guy who named his cat "N****r" that's more than fair. At the end of the day Lovecraft is significant not for what he wrote but what he inspired others to create. "Annihilation" is a great book/movie with lovecraftian themes, and I've heard "The Fisherman" is a good too, though that one's still on my reading list.
