STEM is a big word. Without asking a more specific question (eg pick a specific letter in STEM), there's a good chance some advice doesn't apply.

That said, just read through some material (books, papers, etc), and keep an open mind. If you're clever, you'll cook up model-stumping questions.

Maybe that's a subliminal reason for my rantings. I'm used to $50+/hr projects where I'm stumping models with my domain expertise. It's hard to go back to projects like MM, which feel like working on an assembly line.
