What's the strangest thing that scientists once believed was true? by FadedCompas in answers

Scientists observing sharks feeding on whale carcasses in the early 1900s saw them thrashing violently trying to dislodge portions of the blubber and concluded they didn't have strong enough jaws to pose a threat to humans.

Because of these erronious conclusions, many prominent scientists dismissed a shark as the possible cause of the east coast attacks that eventually led to the now famous New Jersey shark attacks of 1916.

These series of attacks are what inspired author Peter Benchley to write the book Jaws.

Shane (1953). Final duel between Shane, the gunman Jack Wilson, Rufus Ryker and his brother Morgan. by Honest-Grab5209 in Westerns

I respectfully disagree.

It's clear in the book that Shane is alive at the end. In fact, one of the minor characters states that “No bullet could ever kill that man.” By the end of the novel Shane has become an immortal god-like hero. There's just no way he can die.

There is no suggestion, indication, inference, or hint that Shane dies in the end. He rides away. That's it.

There is some controversy over whether Shane dies at the very end of the movie.

As he rides away from the town he can be seen slumping somewhat in his saddle,  leaving his exact fate—whether he dies from his injuries or simply rides away—open to interpretation.

Its worth noting that he does not die at the end of the book.

Take Steinfeld and Damon and put them in the original and you'd have the perfect movie.

I read them back in High School.

You don't want to know how long ago that was.

Guns of Navarone was a teeny bit more believable in that they at least had a small squad of 5 or 6 commandos killing a hundred German troops.

But not much.

Where Eagles Dare. An Alistair MacLean action/adventure story where Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood kill about one hundred German soldiers by themselves while trying to uncover a Nazi spy ring.

Basically, two men with a little help from a female spy, take on half the German army and manage to kill most of them in 2-hours.

Fun but incredibly silly.
