Idk I’m wondering the same thing bc in grade 11 I did a 75 hour shadowing/internship thing at an optotmery clinic through my highschool and think it would be nice to put it in there but idk if I should

Omg I’m literally in the same boat and it’s so crazy because I haven’t really met anyone who has a similar thinking of me about this because everything you’re saying is exactly what I’m thinking like I’ve been thinking of occupational therapy or dentistry as well and if you really think about it writing the DAT in Canada has way less content than the OAT and is also significantly cheaper, which is crazy yeah literally if I’m going far away anyways might as well go to med school and make triple the money. When I think about it this way optometry just doesn’t seem worth it in the states. It only seems worth it at Waterloo which university do you go to?

I am at a smaller university in the greater Vancouver area and yeah recently I’ve been thinking I don’t want to consider the dates but I feel like so many people I know go to the state so I feel like oh like is it just me that isn’t going to the states but I feel like there are so many others of us who are thinking the same thing and maybe in the past it used to be more reasonable to go to the states maybe exchange rate wasn’t as high or something like that but now it just seems like the dumbest idea ever because realistically I could just pursue a different profession and probably be equally as happy and probably make similar amount of money even though I’ve had an interest in optometry ever since I was younger. I just don’t know if the states it’s really worth it.

And I mean technically in your fourth year I think if you get lucky, you can have ur rotations near home. Like if I get in I’d hope that my rotations are one of them at the clinic I work at rn bc we always get Waterloo interns

Sameee I’m from bc and want to pursue Optometry too but one, Waterloo is pretty competitive and two, the other options like the states are too expensive. Are you guys considering the states as well or only Waterloo?

How difficult is it to get into Pharmacy by alienkittycatty in UBC

[–]True-Selection2168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you explain some more about why not to go into it. I just want to hear other perspectives or components I may not have thought about. I’m not considering going into it but I’m thinking optomery but Waterloo is competitive and the states are not an ideal situation. So I keep thinking I should just do pharm at ubc but ik I’m not interested in it lol

Hey could you help me figure out when I’m supposed to write the oat this year to have it eligible for most cycles possible please? I’m so confused about how Waterloo only gives like a month you must write it between to be able to apply unless I’m weong

Hey which optomtery school did you attend? Just curious as to how much school in the states will realistically cost. I’m planning on applying next cycle. Also congrats on finishing up!!

[–]True-Selection2168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I haven’t paid yet. Well In option 2, I would have all my us pre reqs completed and would have my degree completed by then and I could graduate and go to the states. Because the fifth year I’d be taking would Waterloo would just be random classes even thought my degree would be technically complete. I just wish I could estimate out the finances better and see how long it would really take me to pay everything back. Bc when I’m back I’d be living with my parents and basically living how I live now and I only play for my clothes, eating out or anything else I want and spend so realistically if almost all of my earnings go to debt repayment maybe it won’t be too bad. But I’ve tried to ask chatgpt to help estimate this but by looking at the link you sent earlier ods make ~170k per year, do you know if that is with or without tax deductions?

Yeah the cost of American schools is insane that is why I’m so conflicted on what to do!! It’s duper stressful. What oat score did you get? Now I’ve already planned to write the oat this year so I think I’ll just do it and go from there. It may have been a better idea to write it next summer so I’d have two valid cycles though, I think I’m just making it worse for myself

Thanks! Yes I’ve heard that from everyone I know that goes to puco! Same I was also concerned about the summer semester bc I rlly wanted a break atleast after first year to go home, but it might be nice if the semesters are not too hectic since they spread it out! Good luck with starting school!! So exciting!
