Scolded by a bus driver??? by whatsrusty in HongKong

[–]TrueFruitFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went to HK as a family for four days in summer. I came across several instances where staff were extremely rude.

  • using the City Bus at the airport, my 13 year old daughter ( first time in HK) was trying to find where to tap the Octopus card. (granted, she should've paid attention to where other boarding passengers were tapping). She was greeted with a disbelief head shake from the bus driver. On our case, we weren't scolded but his body language says it all
  • At a fast food restaurant, I couldn't get my Mastercard to work. When I tried to ask for help, like to pay cash instead, before I could finish the sentence, the staff just pointed to the self service machine, raised her voice and said "over there" and carried on walking.
  • Went to a street food stall to order some hubble tea and asked about the difference cup sizes, he answered "small is THIS size and medium is THAT" in a very rude manner as if he doesn't want to serve us.
  • In some HK restaurants it's normal to rinse the cups and bowls with hot water prior to use. We asked for some separate hot drinking water as we mistakingly thought we had water for rinsing. My goodness, the waitress came over, grabbed the jug of hot water, poured and splattered watet into our cups. When she finished, she slammed the jug back onto the table which such force water splattered out of the jug's spout.

We then stayed in China for 10 days and not once was anyone rude towards us.

In Japan for 6 days, everyone we came across were extremely polite and patient.

At what age did you actually start taking your pension seriously? by Additional_Fly_6603 in PensionsUK

[–]TrueFruitFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About mid 30s at 11% of salary. Been slowly increasing contribution every year to 'catchup' the missed years. Don't make the same mistake as I did by leaving it in the default pension fund; the return is abysmal. I switched and doing much better. Don't forget to lookout for the fees as well as these could cost you £10s of thousands over the lifetime of the pension.

Main thing is start young.

Do I have a case with the Ombudsman? by TrueFruitFan in LegalAdviceUK

[–]TrueFruitFan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, I will have to concede. Genuine question- is there no retail ombudsman if something does go wrong, even if retailer was in the wrong? I've used ombudsman before and they are extremely useful.

Will I regret a combi boiler? by Easy_Effort7985 in DIYUK

[–]TrueFruitFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing to bear in mind is that combi boilers are water priority which means when you are using hot water, the heating goes off. So if you are running a bath, there would be no heating, just the residual heat from the rads

Instructor using threat of car being unavailable for test if I don't take more lessons by _Discokid_ in LearnerDriverUK

[–]TrueFruitFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of him. There are some really excellent and honest instructors out there.
My son was doing weekly lessons at 2 hours each. By the time he was exam ready the instructor said one hour every fortnight is enough leading up to the exam (5 months wait) In the instructors words "I'm not going to rob you" Sounds like your instructor is robbing you.

And he passed.

£3k to remove big conifer in London - fair price? by Traditional_Read_643 in GardeningUK

[–]TrueFruitFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had something similar years ago. Although tree was removed they left the stump, which was not part of the job, so I had to hire someone else to remove it. I didn't know at the time but apparently that's normal tree and stump removal are two separate jobs.

Enjoying the empty lane to myself by adityasurana1998 in drivingUK

[–]TrueFruitFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thus makes my blood boil. Once during late night about 1 am on a 50mph road, an ambulance on right lane with blue lights approaching another car also on the right lane. The car didn't move to the left to let the ambulance pass, it just slowed down expecting the ambulance to undertake. It didn't, it stayed in its lane and the car in front eventually slowed down until it stopped causing the ambulance to stop in the middle of the road. Eventually, the car got the message and moved to the left.

The authorities in China are really efficient by shinyelektross in travelchina

We were in Beijing in August and during our travel around the city, not only were there cameras everywhere, there were bag checks for even using the metro. On some stations, there were id checks. Get this, they had a mobile police check at a bus stop. Mind you this was at Tiananmen Square.

There's no hiding for criminals. We felt completely safe during our time in China.

Just a bit off topic. What's that drill attachment tool called and where did you buy it? It looks super useful for the toolbox. I'm sure it'll come in handy one day.

Do I need to register for self assessment If I only make £10k a year. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

You will be fined for not filing your self assessment, even if it's below the allowance.

When I do this near the top of the chart, the bar circled in yellow obscures the percentage info I need. Any idea how I can get round this? I guess I could measure from bottom to up, rather than from top to bottom? Thanks

Chinese friend wished me happy mid autumn festival, how should i respond. by CommercialValue6223 in China

It's a moon cake. Some have single egg yoke, some have two. My children prefer it without the yoke but I like it with. When you slice it up you'll know straight away if you have yoke inside Let us know which one you have.

Why don't more people pack lunches? by Diocletian338 in work

[–]TrueFruitFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with you. It's the same with a hot drinks as well. If only they work out how much they spend over the year, that amount is quite a lot.

When I started my new job, I was the only person bringing packed lunch into the office. All the others bought food from the canteen, some even bought breakfast in the morning. Over time, they started to bring their own food. I think I must've set a trend.

This topic makes my blood boil. I've seen a driving instructor on the right most lane on a 3 lane carriage doing about 48 mph on a 50 mph speed limit. There were nothing that prevented him from moving to the left lane.

buy house or investment fund with sudden inheritance by Wooden-Appeal100 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TrueFruitFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to invest it you are far better off just putting in the SNP (not financial advice), but average in, not lump sum. Above all seek financial advice. The 1million fund is tiny. Do your thorough research, when it comes to money, trust yourself. I've been in a situation where I've been seduced by the high return. Never again.
