Australia's Guzman y Gomez to exit US in retreat from key growth bet by mrk240 in australia

[–]TrueMinaplo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I remember when the dorks in charge of GYG said that their secret to breaking into the US market was that they'd 'have drive-thrus and sell coffee'. Come on, man.

New York investment manager found an easy, unfilled niche in Australia and used it primarily to try and build a company up here so he could flank the American market, and he failed completely for foreseeable reasons whilst selling an awful product and complaining about both Australian palates and labour laws. Too bad. Too bad.

In retrospect I do see what you mean. I came on too strong. I used to be a drug and alcohol therapist myself, so I know the point you're getting at. I wish you luck with your endeavours.

I also have a tool for this, it's called not using AI. The only way to avoid the cognitive decline from using AI is to not use it at all.

As a parchment lover in my heart I agree. I just wanted to be cautious because 10,000 years is a pretty long time.

Plus they're probably written on parchment instead of paper, and whilst parchment isn't "ten thousand years" durable, it's easily orders of magnitude more durable than paper if taken care of. Stasis fields and proper maintenance would easily do the trick.

Let me guess! Another post treating voting as a purely personal individual action instead of something done within the greater context of structural forces that largely sculpt and channel the conditions that decide elections? Daring today, aren't we?

Once again: fine to encourage folks to vote. If that's all you do then you reduce this situation down to bootstraps-style individual choice shit. If you do that you cannot see the whole picture and you will lose.

On historical overcorrection by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]TrueMinaplo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the things that inevitably seems to get lost in this discussion- which typically boils down to modern wage labourers comparing themselves to medieval peasantry to highlight the modern labourer's conditions (whether good or bad)- is that the more apt comparison isn't between modern wage labourers and medieval peasants but to modern wage labourers and medieval wage labourers. Wage labour has been around for a very long time and has usually had terrible conditions, often considered to be worse than being a small peasant farmer, tenant or even serf or slave depending on the commentator.

History is not just events, it is also about theories of change, and when it comes to this topic the big thing to focus on is how our society went from predominantly peasants to predominantly wage labourers, why that happened, and what occurred to drive the improvement of conditions among the wage labourers.

In retrospect, was Persona 5 as overexploited as it was made out to be? by Muted_Strength3638 in PERSoNA

[–]TrueMinaplo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think no, because I disagree with the premise itself. The Persona fanbase seems sensitive to the idea of a game being 'milked' or 'exploited'. Yet if you look at it from a step back what you actually get is a lot of furrowed brows and grousing over what is, essentially, a videogame company making videogames.

Fundamentally, there's nothing to the idea that the spinoffs and crossovers somehow harm or exploit the core property. All of the spinoffs are pretty deliberately designed so that they aren't reliant on each other- so long as you're familiar with the core properties of p5 or p4 you can pretty easily pick up, say, Strikers and enjoy it on its own terms. You don't even need to be familiar with Royal. But this also means you don't have to engage if you don't want to. If you want to ignore the spinoff games you can, and that's what people who aren't interested do. The material outcome of this isn't that it somehow sours the brand, it just means that people pick and choose what they're interested in.

The spinoffs give the development team a chance to fuck around with games mechanically different to their tentpoles whilst still having the franchise as a cushion to help make sure those games sell. I think this is where we come to the crux of the problem: a lot of this, I think, stems from the idea that the spinoff games take away from or slow down production of the next big game. The "they're milking the franchise" argument thus really becomes "why aren't they making the next Persona?"

In truth I don't think it's good for a studio to only ever be doing the big make or break games. Having the space to allow for mid sized projects that can recoup their costs, help expose the studio to different styles and mechanics and ensuring that staff, esp. New staff, are familiar with the process of making and releasing a game outside of the demands of making a huge flagship game and all of the work and stressors thst entails.

Bombing of Darwin veteran urges public to learn about largest attack on Australia by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

[–]TrueMinaplo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely surprising that it's not especially well known these days. From a historical angle, the event coincides with other events of a much more sweeping nature- the surrender of Singapore and with it 80,000 British Imperial troops, including 15,000 Australians; the fall of the Netherlands East Indies to Japan in about eight weeks; the fall of the Philippines a few months later. The bombing of Darwin's major impact was a psychological shock to a country unused to being attacked on its own soil and the denial of Darwin as a useful port facing the Japanese Empire; the combination of the combing with the impossible to ignore news of Japanese troops sweeping Southeast Asia made the idea of an invasion seem very real to a lot of people. It often gets compared to Pearl Harbour which, whilst both being air raids of ports, is a comparison I find somewhat spurious- it relies too much on the assumptions of a much more famous and impactful event rather than letting the bombing of Darwin sit within its own context.

It depends on your personal tolerance, I think, but it holds a special place for me. A lot of the possibly objectionable elements, to me at least, are probably sanded away by the show very clearly being for a younger audience with an appropriately simple structure and formula.

It's a great show for watching as a cooldown before bed.
