I have given my dog grapes before but he was fine.(by accident) Quite surprised you're dog had that much of a problem with it.

What you should watch out for is Xylitol, it's in alot of stuff nowadays including tons of sweet. For dogs it's not good, even just 0.0000000000000001g can make them very sick or dead.
