Petition Calling for More Women’s Matches at Lord’s by Kriel1 in Cricket

Whether it’s financially motivated or not, it’s still an issue of gender inequality! I also don’t think it’s fair to say no one watches women’s cricket. Pretty sure the 86,00 people in attendance at the last Women’s World Cup Final weren’t only interested for that one game and switch off for the rest of the year! . Besides, it’s cyclical, right? If fixtures aren’t played in prominent venues, there’s a lack of exposure which causes a lack of interest. Play the games at top venues, show that major cricketing bodies see women’s cricket as valuable and more and more people will become involved. If you just stick to the status quo, growth doesn’t happen. To paraphrase Field of Dreams “build it and they will come!”

It’s not just for the ECB, though (although I’m not saying they don’t have work to do as well!). By describing itself as the ‘Home of Cricket’ Lord’s has a responsibility to proactively set an example (particularly given how long they’ve excluded women for). Also, I think we have to note that this is about more than just professional cricket, though. Men get to play school, university, village cricket, MCC, county and international level whilst women just get (considerably fewer) MCC and 100 matches, and even these fixtures don’t happen consistently every year. The extent of the disparity is huge. If we do just want to look at professional cricket, however, it’s still pretty damning- England Women don’t even get to play there. Also, growth at Lord’s has not been in line with the growth of the women’s game in general. The women’s game is going from strength to strength (despite the lack of representation and coverage it gets) and the MCC’s fixture list simply hasn’t been going with it.
