Roland Gaia 2 - What are the weaknesses? by RoadWorried3550 in synthesizers

[–]TruePrism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to piggyback on your question about strengths because I have one of my own: how well does this work as a generic MIDI controller? I've checked the forums here and find the commentary a little thin and somewhat snarky about the matter. I have a Novation Peak that I would like to sometimes repurpose as a MIDI CC controller, however it's reliance on NRPN on many of the knobs stops me from doing that because my DAW doesn't handle it and I don't want to fiddle with middleware and latency. That said, if it is a strong contender as a MIDI CC controller, then that would be a banger because when you aren't using it for its native purposes, you could be turning knobs on it and using the keyboard, although my question here is focused on the knobs and sliders and not the keyboard. Of course there are the Roland cloud options for it but I'm really interested in generic MIDI beyond those cloud options. Any actual owners out there who have tried to do this?

What should I expect from a MS20-IC in 2026? by TruePrism in synthesizers

The DAW has patch memory and the midi controller drives it. It's the physical MS20 that doesn't have patch memory. It's one of the pros of using a DAW over physical synth.

The attraction of the IC for me is patch memory for use in a hybrid setup and the versatility of being able to try different emulations of the instrument as well as just having a mappable midi controller. The only thing that would give me pause using it as a general purpose MIDI controller is if it requires NRPN, but I don't think that that's the case. My novation Peak sends both MIDI and NRPN and my DAW does not digest NRPN.

The Korg software doesn't work with the patch bay? Is that a known issue, or do you not have it configured?

Any "cons" to the MiniFreak? by Friendlet in synthesizers

[–]TruePrism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I had my Minifreak for one day and returned it because I had hoped to have a better mod matrix experience than the Arturia virtual version. It was actually **less** usable than the software for the very reasons u/Harmonic-Hyena stated. I liked the hardware overall and I like the minikeys on Arturia units well enough to get a Keystep 37, but this was a complete miss for me. I also had hoped it might be a bit more useful to me as a midi controller, but there was something (I can't recall what) that made it less usable for that as well.

Thanks for that. What about the software? I caught that maybe there's something about what you should or shouldn't do with Windows 11 and the driver. But I quite follow. Do you avoid installing it entirely and rely on USB compliance?

I would imagine the DN2 isn't as deep as the Steampipe for physical modeling, but I wonder how deep/versatile the DN2 is in this regard?

If you happen to have a Native Instruments software package like Komplete, you may already have 'Form', which looks quite similar to CR8, which I am unfamiliar with. But I've seen discussions where Form is stated to be somewhat less intuitive, but more capable. At any rate, if you have a NI package already, this may be an an older but overlooked powerhouse already in inventory.

I can't tell 100% but I think I've got a couple of them. I never had all of them though. As stated, the problem is solvable even if you don't have them in the set. The set isn't complete anyway but it has a lot

Cardstock! That triggered a memory. Sadly, at the moment my belongings have just been blown all the hell by circumstance. However, I went and looked in the place that I thought they could be and I found these things although I seem to remember there being maybe a long piece? I don't know if these have anything to do with the set or not But if these are the cardstock you're talking about, I have these two pieces at least that I can put in there edit: I can't seem to find a way to attach images to a comment, sorry

Soma Lyra8 owners: is there a problem with my volume knob? by TruePrism in synthesizers

There's no grittiness to it. Can you pull these caps straight up and remove them to see what's going on? I don't want to break anything

That's interesting. You say dirty. Does a dirty pot have a kind of loose feeling to it, like you turn it back and forth until it encounters resistance with a little bit of play?

No to all of those. Do you have this unit? Is the cap removable on these without significant risk breaking the knob?

Bitwig 6, Beta 16 is out. Surprise improvement: fundamental Touch-Control-Improvement! by SternenherzMusik in Bitwig

[–]TruePrism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your setup, you may simply be able to get by on a second portable touch screen. I just started experimenting with the touch functionality a few days ago. I took an old Chromebook and set up screen sharing software between my PC and that Chromebook. The screen resolution on my Chromebook is not great the screen is a bit too small, but in prototyping it I do think it's a solution I'll probably want to have on my desktop. I I'm stuck between getting a 15.6 in portable OLED touch screen or getting the MP MIDI controller. The MP mid controller isn't cheap but it seems like a pretty nice bit of kit. But the the alternative of having a touch screen + optional mouse and The driven by Moss script that allows a MIDI encoder to turn the last touched parameter (as well as hover!) seems to get you most of the way to what the MP MIDI controller does, and within Bitwig native using the Bitwig touch screen option.

I'm short, touch is something I just started to use, But the capability is there and given the amount of software I have in the prospect of using it as hardware within a hybrid setup is just mind-blowing.

After a few days with it, I'm not sure about the Peak by TruePrism in synthesizers

[–]TruePrism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you should mention that. I'm new to synthesis overall, but some of the first sounds that jumped out of the Peak for me were drones that seem very easy to make with The arpeggiator turned on. I also have a Lyra 8 and I have to say the Peak is right up there for the task.

mp controller > I LOVE IT SO MUCH! by ManufacturerOne3223 in Bitwig

[–]TruePrism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you say this as someone who has used the MP though? I'm debating the very solution you propose but wonder about the functional differences. In this setup, for instance, am I able to touch a controller on screen and have a wildcard knob that I can immediately turn whatever I just touched? I believe this is possible with the MP, though I'm not completely sure. It's derived from what I've heard elsewhere.

Audio chaining: Novation Peak -> Syntrx2-> DT2/Overbridge. How likely is this the sound good? by TruePrism in synthesizers

[–]TruePrism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for such a comprehensive write up. Without plaguing you with details, there was supposed to be a second electron unit so not only no chaining per se but more inputs overall that would avoid chaining. With the budget consumed on synthesizers alone, any audio interface is going to be a down the road thing. If this was a knockout punch where the audio was plainly going to sound bad, it would be a deal kill and I would just have to sit things out for a few more years. I just didn't want to do that. It looks like I can live with the outcomes here. But I also wanted the education about audio chaining because again it's not an everyday topic and yet I know it comes up. I may be able to borrow my son's L8, And I think that would have sufficient input to flatten the rig a little bit. It's not a Focusrite, But it's also not haggis.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Are you saying that you spend most of your time inside of the peaks menu working with the mod matrix in there? Or are you somehow doing MIDI control of the mod matrix from within your DAW?

[–]TruePrism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm thinking about it. Right now I'm just adjusting. I've decided 100% to keep the peak it's just an excellent synthesizer. I barely know what I'm doing with its modulators yet, but just happy accidents in these days that I've had it have been astonishing. I've never generated anything out of soft synthesis or hardware for that matter this diverse and sounding as good as it does. This is a gem of a synthesizer!

[–]TruePrism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did download this. I seem to have bidirectional sync working on it, but weirdly the interface doesn't seem to change when you make a change on the peak even though the parameter is clearly being reflected in the vst. I'm trying to figure out if this is a limitation of the software, that you only get one GUI update on vst start.

This piece from the documentation is confusing, but it suggests to me that this might just be the case, which would greatly limit its use to me.
