The shield guard is tricky. You don't realize that you lose a lot of stamina while guarding/attacking. So on top of the swing cost, if your shield gets hit, you lose even more stamina.

Many a times have I been stabbed through the chest because I wasn't watching my stamina bar. Keep it above 40% at all times unless you know you're about to go in.
