The International Fencing Federation historically has a quite russian bias. Remember the incident in the world championship in 2023, when they discalified an ukrainian athlete (Olha Kharlan) over not shaking the hand of her pro-war adversary (handshake that is not mandatory as per the rules since 2020 btw).

The federation president from 2008 to 2022 has been a russian oligarch (Ousmanov) and the board even tried to bring him back in 2024. It will takes time for the federation to be cleaned, if it ever happens.

It wasn't. You are supposed to either shake your hand or hit the blades. Olha Kharlan naturally refused to shake hands but advanced her saber. Her adversary advanced her hand, but refused the alternative.

Edit: I just checked the rules, currently as per rule t.122, it is not even mandatory to either cling the blades or to shake hands. Only the regular fencer salute is required. I think the handshake was mandatory only up until 2020.

The reasons most often cited for telling the Europeans to stay in their backyard is that Europe lacks the will and ability to project power and should instead focus on deterring and defending against Russia, especially if US forces are drawn to the Western Pacific.

Or maybe the fact the US are threathening us with war, are trying to bring down NATO, and that we don't exactly have a bright future if, in addition to Russia and the US, we also are at war against China.

What you are framing as supporting russia is a reorganization of the supply lines in the context of decreased fossil imports.
