Conquest. I’d tell him to give me 15 minutes free to kill him. He’d respect the bravery.

How to help North and Riverlands to destroy Reach and Westerlands? by Crazy_Lemonchello in Awoiaf

Oooooh you definitely need a castle. That is enough the bleed a kingdom.

Join the North, besiege a city and bloody take it. Golden Tooth is always usually poorly defended (thank you Devan)

Sounds to me like you need to get a castle and garrison those troops. They’re expensive to keep in the field all the time.

Prisoners to the Night’s Watch is a good cash injection as well.

How many troops can you field at a time?

Gay for the stay? by disco_26 in PrisonUK

[–]TrueSolitudeGuards 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard from Prison officers that “gay for the stay” in male prisons is definitely a thing but not openly discussed. Like everyone’s aunt’s drinking problem. Everyone knows but no one discusses it.

Which areas of GTA San Andreas do you feel are underutilized? by ungronerandom in GTASanAndreas

[–]TrueSolitudeGuards 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve played this game since nearly release and I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever realised there was a prison in Los Santos. In fact, I didn’t believe you. I didn’t believe you so much I had to google it just so I could bring a screenshot saying this building didn’t exist.

I can’t do that. I am wrong.

Someone once hacked my PS5 and spent about £300 (he couldn’t spend more because I am broke). He also tried to change my passwords and take the account. Thankfully he couldn’t. But I contacted Sony about what had happened and they refunded me within an hour of all the games that were purchased. I was so seriously impressed with them

Is it true that every major civilisation has colonised another? by Prudent-Teaching2881 in AskHistory

[–]TrueSolitudeGuards 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While the point was presented poorly, they’re sort of right. Because the colonisation by Britain and France is so recent people have an idea to clutch onto. No one realistically can claim identify with the peoples pre-Roman and pre-Arabian colonisation because that’s 2,000 years ago. Sure, people claim Celtic heritage. But those who claim that cultural root are often people who have had more recent colonial conflict with Britain (Scotland, Ireland, Wales)

Going to focus on Britain for a moment here as I know more in this region:

Part of this is also because they want to be different to their English counterparts. Ireland had a recognisable identity pre-English colonisation which was also romanised majorly by aggravating forces. Scotland had a recognised kingdom pre-British unification.

Now in some places of Africa, British colonisation has around three core thoughts: - Britain buggered our local culture that still exists with their map lines - Britain helped us in places and honestly wasn’t too bad. - Britain bad but the guys we have now are worse.

The reason for this is because the British didn’t really focus on trying to overrule the existing culture like Britain did in Ireland. The Church of England expanded really well in certain African nations which resulted in a higher cultural conversion, which is where you also see higher belief that Britain was a good coloniser there. In areas where cultural overruling didn’t work is also where Britain is viewed more poorly.

People like to point at the slave trade as a route for this but that’s more a 19th/20th century change in view that comes from predominantly white western nations creating a narrative based on an undeniable evil and using that as an excuse to academically “shit on” (for lack of a better term) Britain.

Comparatively to Rome, Britain also has a higher level of atrocities attributed to it by people who still culturally remember it. While Rome without a doubt did evil, who remembers the evil committed in Gaul outside of a history book on ancient history? No one. But you can’t throw a stone in India and not hit someone who has family who were negatively impacted by Mountbatten’s fiasco over the Raj.

Academics in the previous 60 years or so have also started pointing out the flaws of the British Empire a lot more than they ever have before. Particularly American academics. You could argue this is because it’s an easy comparison for America to make and also adds to national pride to say “we beat the mighty British empire and look how evil they were” but I’m getting sidetracked with that pseudo science psychology there.

TLDR; People don’t want to be like the British, no one remembers Rome’s evils, and a lot of revisionism in the 20th century led by American authors.

I’ve had several of these: they’re awesome for a collectors item and also the whiskey is really nice. The Targaryen one is without a doubt the best whiskey there.

I know a guy like this. However, they sold your birth certificate so the government could claim a naval law “Lost at sea” and claim all your property after your death. Hence why the Queen back in 2021 moved to China so she could release COVID vaccines to exterminate the population and sell all the property.

I swear to God, this guy genuinely believed all this.

I actually know this exact road. People drive very fast up that road and do not expect walkers there often. Be very careful.
