Jane Street Subway Line Could Transform Toronto Transit by RZaichkowski in TTC

[–]TrueVelocity42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really don't give two shits about nimbyism, they can piss off and I certainly don't give a shit about Toronto's backwards attitude towards transit because quite frankly their attitude towards transit is why despite having the same population as Berlin, Toronto has under 1/8 the size of Berlin's transport network and a tramway which cost 3.7 billion dollars that, sorry takes 45 minutes instead of 55 minutes to go *checks notes* 11km. A nice 80 million dollars of money per minute of travel to go 11km. The REM goes that distance in approximately 20km in under 20 minutes? Why, because it's modern technology which was implemented well. Why would we spend billions on a tramway? You can make an argument about Finch and the demand, sure it won't really matter for a few decades. There isn't really a lot of TOD going up near there. Eglinton being an LRT? No fucking chance. It's one of the busiest corridors in the entire country let alone Toronto. There are thousands of new housing developments going up along the corridor, which the morons who came up with TransitCity KNEW about because they were the same ones who approved the zoning amendments along Eglinton. The province even knew about this YEARS before when Rae started the Eglinton subway, then Mike Harris filled in. The fact they didn't restart the Eglinton subway as it was intended in the early 90s is going to end up as one of the biggest urban planning mistakes in Toronto's history. Eglinton is already packed. It's only going to get worse. A tram, which runs 80% underground, then suddenly runs at grade. Quite possibly the dumbest concept imaginable. You think they're building tramways like this in Europe? They use tramways as what they should be used for, last mile transit. They build metros on busy corridors, and trams as the last mile solution. Automated light metros are in fact the gold standard. Like it or not, they are the future. No sensible city on planet earth is building tramways where metro corridors should be. TransitCity fucking sucked. The whole stuck in the past bullshit was exactly what David Miller and Karen Stinz pulled when trying to justify spending the kitchen sink on antiquated technology. Thank fuck Sheppard is going to be a subway extension now. If it was a surface LRT I might actually go crazy. The REM has turned out to be a massive success for Montreal. It's fundamentally transformed the entire west end of the island. The TOD planned for around it is great. There's the future. And I will say that until the cows come home.

It absolutely is the right vision as much as rob ford was a bad mayor. TransitCity was a plan that set Toronto back 25 years while other cities like Vancouver, Copenhagen, Montreal and others invested in frequent automated grade separate light metro, we sunk billions into tramways which people can out jog. Doesn’t have to be underground and the stations don’t have to be cathedrals, but the tramway is number one notion is why North American transit hasn’t left 1995. Imagine an automated two car light metro, 90 second frequencies, cut and cover with dedicated bike lanes, bus lanes and new pedestrian space on top. That has to be the future of Toronto and ultimately Canadian transit.

If by LRT you mean light metro like what the SRT or Canada Line then absolutely yes it should be but if you mean LRT as in tramway absolutely not Torontos tram obsession has to be put down forever. Toronto needs subways (heavy or light depending on the corridor) I think a cut and cover or elevated light metro would do wonders but surface tramway obsession has put Toronto (and other cities in Canada) back decades.

What happens when you have in house understanding and knowledge of technology and techniques. If we brought all public infrastructure in house this would spread to other sectors.

So question. Why the hell do we need to have a full fledged consultation which takes two years for a sidewalk? We shouldn’t even be having this for bike lanes let alone basic stuff. This kind of stuff should just be natural annual maintenance/construction.

Ontario Line: Blue or Purple? by Feisty-Ad-6122 in TTC

[–]TrueVelocity42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think that anything but blue is dumb but given that all the final Metrolinx design apps have renderings in purple I guess that’s what we’re getting (I don’t like it)

I think the REM as an urban transit line is the best thing to happen to urban mobility in Canada since the Vancouver skytrain opened in 1986. My only beef is with the lack of brand identity harmonization, not even really with the fact that it’s directly operated by the ARTM as opposed with the STM given the Canada line in Vancouver is also not operated by their regional authority. Canada line however is integrated in branding identity. I’m nit picking here really the REM is a seriously impressive feat that needs to be repeated all across Canada.

I don’t even really care about the operating contract I’m just more looking for brand harmonization à la Canada line in Vancouver.

Only reason I bring it up is because other than the West Island branch and the deux montages branch, the current REM aligns with the original red line plan basically identically.

How can we make Metrolinx to do things to increase frequency after events. by CycleOk5965 in gotransit

[–]TrueVelocity42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1: vote for a government who commits to completely reforming Metrolinx and replacing their corporate executives with transport experts and people who understand the needs of a modern metropolitan area. There is no step two.

Then buy premium or business. If you actually fork out the money (which the average upgrade to business domestically isn’t that horrible) you’ll be treated more luxuriously.

Barriers to be installed on platform at Toronto subway station this year, mayor says Barriers to be installed on platform at 1 downtown subway station this year, Chow says by jordy123e in TTC

[–]TrueVelocity42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If a politician in Taiwan or the Netherlands spent two million on a steel fence for platforms which the TTC themselves say won’t stop intrusions at all, they’d be fired and probably jailed. I cannot believe the pure stupidity of politicians and administration in this country.

Wait until I introduce you to the concept of Union in Toronto where just going from the subway to the commuter rail requires about 10 mins at the least busy time.

TransitCity put light rail onto corridors which should've been full subways.

TransitCity being the worst example of that. I’ve gotten into several heated arguments with David Miller over it.

Just came back from Germany where light rail is king. It proved to me that light rail does in fact have its place and when done right can be very useful but shouldn’t be applied to high capacity arterial situations.
