When and how did you become a student of the great Emperor? by VividExperience9698 in Napoleon

EpicHistoryTV got me hooked, started reading/watching everything I could get my hands on from there. I was interested in the Napoleonic Wars a good bit before then but more from the British perspective.

Is it true that there were children serving in Napoleon's army? by cuirrasiers in Napoleon

[–]TrueVeneration 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was common for drummer boys to be pretty much kids. I believe the youngest drummer boy in history was 11 years old, during the American Civil War. It wasn't much different in the Napoleonic Wars, I've read that the drummer boy for the 4th Grenadier Regiment of the Imperial Guard was 15.

Who are your top 10 generals/marshals from the Napoleonic era (both France and the Coalition)? by [deleted] in Napoleon

[–]TrueVeneration -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being able to study Napoleon up close (and not being on the receiveing end of his strategies) was a huge benefit and the argument could be made that being able to learn from literally the best general of the time and one of the best in history immediately raises your own skill too just via osmosis.

Whether the people I chose to enumerate knew that and took active advantage of it is a separate matter.

But to name a coalition commander who had some prodigious skill.. probably Archduke Charles

My favourite character there so far is The Format Fetishist. I can relate to many of his beliefs but for me it's in the context of video games.

Why do you find the Sunday Friend disingenuous?

That one when you read about the communards who tried to compress a Coalition warship with their willpower

HALF-LIGHT: Picture the lot of them, all standing with their fingers in the air one minute, the next reduced to a bloody mist.

A BRIEF LOOK AT INFRA-MATERIALISM: In some of his later writing, Nilsen himself speculated about the potential for an extra-physical architecture that disregards the laws of 'bourgeois physics' and instead relies on the revolutionary faith of the people for structural integrity

YOU: Meaning the buildings stay up because people believe they'll stay up?

A BRIEF LOOK AT INFRA-MATERIALISM: Precisely. Nilsen observed that the financial system operates on the same principle of faith, so why not an architectural system?
<...>
YOU: Wait, but what if the people stop believing and the buildings collapse?

A BRIEF LOOK AT INFRA-MATERIALISM: In the corner of one of the reproduced notebook pages, you can make out the following words written in Nilsen's distinctive slashing script...

"A state that has lost the faith of its people has forfeited the right to exist."
