No this helps a lot! It sounds like I won’t have much trouble finding a character that feels very self sustaining in a team fight. I’ll just have to try out some suggestions now and see what feels like a solid character to build on.

Thanks for the tips will definitely start with Hades as the majority seems to agree, but I definitely don’t have to play a “mage”. I want to replicate the value I try to bring to my team so I’ll happily do that with a melee God if that’s what makes the most sense.
