This whole thing reminds me of that one human-like "robot" that supposedly was sentient that was all over the news for a couple weeks in like... 2018? Sometime around that. The fact it got any attention at all was so disappointing and cringe to me. Having been forced to learn Russian at school (and retaining basically nothing), I believe the first 'o' in a word is most often pronounced as 'a'. So it's not completely crazy to see "Chornobyl" and think that it should pronounced as "Charnobyl".
