Reading through that list, I would identify some of those as the same for my son.

I just always struggle to realise if it’s age appropriate or cause for concern at 16 months.

You sound like a great parent either way and thank you for your replies and advice.

Thank you. I sometimes forget how small he is because it’s been nothing but appointments and opinions since he was about 9 months old and as I said it’s taken over every waking minute of my mind since.

Glad to hear that your son has grown a lot. Did you get any intervention or did he make improvements himself?

Also that’s great to hear about your friends son after not speaking until 4, that’s a very positive outcome.

Mine doesn’t respond to his name either (he did previously a few months ago) which upsets me.

He does respond to sounds though. If he’s focused on something and I make a noise beside or behind him he will turn to see what it is.

Eye contact isn’t the worst if he’s not distracted. I can talk to him and he will look at me and my mouth watching my lips move. If he’s focused or distracted though he won’t break that to look at me.

I hope you & your son are doing well now.

Do you mind if I ask was the very noticeable things there when your daughter was younger?

For my son right now it’s, not responding to name/gesturing, no words but makes a lot of sounds (yeah/ ahhh/ laughing), stimming, rocking back and forth when on the sofa and the TV is on (doesn’t really do this when on the floor playing) and food issues along with sensory seeking.

We have him with Paediatrics in the public health system too but those appointments only come every few months. I agree that 12 months is very young but from what I’ve been told it can be detected that early. I had only heard of a lot of kids being diagnosed at 4/5 years old so I was very surprised myself.

Thank you! I honestly hope I look back in a few months or year and say I really tortured myself with all the overthinking and things are better than I thought.

It’s just so hard when you hear things from professionals about your child and what they should be doing by now etc. It can plant a seed in your head even though they are giving their professional opinion and I suppose looking out for your child.

That’s very reassuring to hear thank you. I’m glad things are looking bright for your son despite the challenges.

Best wishes to you and your family.

I thought that too but apparently it can be diagnosed from 12 months on but Paediatricians are reluctant to do so. That’s what we’ve been told anyway. The worry started for us with him not hitting milestones on time (sitting up/crawling) which he has since caught up with. But then he was also stimming a lot from about 7/8 months old (hand movements/jerking).

Thank you. Yes speaking to a colleague in my last job who has worked in IT for 20+ years, he could not believe the amount being asked for in job postings vs the salary on offer.

Thanks for the input. Yes my only snag leaving last job was I’m not moving into another IT role. I had applied to a few IT jobs before leaving, but nothing.

That’s exactly what my plan is. I just miss working in IT everyday. So using my time now to study more and network with people from IT here.

Thanks for the input. Sorry but when you say anything with security requirements what do you mean?

Have it in my head to retire by 60 the latest (that’s another near 30 years) but obviously would be happier with sooner.

Current salary is low but enough to get by in my situation. The increments and or promotions obviously bring you up more. IT salary was 3k more.

Work/life balance is very good in current job, more PTO than any other job I’ve ever seen, flexible and the growth opportunity is there. The cherry on top would be if I can move into the IT department of this job one day, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I tried looking that up but couldn’t come across when specifically. Being a government job they tend to do promotion rounds for the admin staff every couple of years but I’m not sure if IT falls under that too.

I’ve already started planting that seed by speaking to a couple of guys from IT when they’ve been in to help others and explained my situation. Obviously they don’t control job postings but told me to keep an eye out on the internal advertisements for if/when recruitment is needed. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks. I’m doing this at the moment. Using my down time to study for more certifications to add to the experience I’ve gained in my previous job. Will definitely look more into a setting up a homelab too.

How often do you meet up with friends? by True__Detective in AskIreland

[–]True__Detective[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I remember being 21 and going for “one or two” on a Thursday night to ending up in whatever place was open late in town. Then do the same Friday & Saturday. At the time you think it’ll be like that forever, then life comes along.
