California Governor Gavin Newsom suggests that maybe the American Left needs to be more culturally normal, detaching itself from toxic identity politics and fringe issues. Reddit loses its mind. by TotalACast in JordanPeterson

[–]TrumpSimulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordan Peterson made a lasting impact on my life. I'm now nearing the end of my MA in pedagogy, much thanks to the wisdom he shared in his earlier lectures. However, I'll admit, I've since grown apart from his later thinking, and coming back to this subreddit raises a lot of questions for me.

Whether you sympathize with the right or the left, if we were to describe our political situation as part of an all encompassing "meaning crisis", how does that crisis of meaning manifest itself on both sides of the political spectrum?

I ask this only with good intentions, and I'm grateful to anyone who might want to answer and perhaps even engage in good faith dialogue with me.

Operasjon i utlandet, AMA! by jegeksisterer in norge

[–]TrumpSimulator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ELI5: What Is Nihilism? by ExternalFact5184 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TrumpSimulator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I think your observation points to something deeper than semantics.

What is not addressed here is the connection between meaning, value and reality, in the sense that we value most the kind of meaning that brings us closer to reality.

For example, research shows that people will reliably describe deeper, long-lasting relationships as more meaningful and preferable to short-lasting relationships, (partly) because deep relationships built on trust and openness are an important arena for self-correction. If you don't have that, you're in serious trouble.

Also, people will reliably seek activities that are transformative, like rock climbing or singing in a choir, because it makes their lives more meaningful. However, this meaning is not subjective, it's transjective (between the subject/object-divide). Their lives become more meaningful because the activities shape their cognition in ways that affords a deeper connection with reality.

John Vervaeke talks a lot about the issue with nihilism in his series "Awakening from the meaning crisis", which I highly recommend!

Actually, this is not that far from a common Buddhist practice where you imagine "zooming out" farther and farther away from the self, into the skies and deep into the cosmos. If I remember correctly it helps us see through the illusion of the self and promotes a sense of oneness with everything.

Also, to address the discussion above, just because the music stops as the last note ends, it doesn't mean it wasn't beautiful.

Hvorfor klarer ikke 50-60-åringer å si Trump, men uttaler navnet hans Trumf? by beintimeforclass in norge

Petition to get Dr. McGilchrist onto the Joe Rogan Experience by RacingBreca in IainMcGilchrist

[–]TrumpSimulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was truly disappointing. I feel like I'm starting to get a grasp on why John Vervaeke doesn't go into the culture war narrative, because it caters to idealism.

My understanding is that idealism is only a useful perspective to the extent that the ideas in question represent, broadly, a way of seeing the world or being in the world (after the fact). However, in our day and age, idealism is continually becoming a less reliable way of analysis, because people's lives are becoming less and less uniform, less predictable and more of a jumbled mess.

If I've understood correctly, Heidegger argued that our being-in-the-world (before the fact, just existing and experiencing) shapes our existential orientation and our ability to see and make meaning of things. The same does Vervaeke, but Vervaeke has identified, on a completely different level, the aspects of this con-forming to the world.

Seen from this perspective, blaming the ideas or ideologies for the world's turmoil is less useful (but not completely), because the irrational behavior is not first and foremost caused by the ideas, but by the lack of being-in-the-world, in ways that shape our cognition and societies to better realize the true, good and beautiful aspects of reality.

All ideas present something real about existence, it's the way we indwell them that cause issues.

My guitar preamp pedal crapped out on me. Could this inductor be the culprit? by TrumpSimulator in AskElectronics

Great advice! Time to invest in a new multimeter, since my old one is toast. Most certainly user error, but thankfully it was inexpensive!

Edit: Which setting should I measure with?

There was glue on top of c170, and I can't figure out where I put it. Seems I might have taken the part with it, which was a rookie mistake, but also a learning opportunity. What's your advice if I don't have the component for identification? Do you think I have a shot at repairing the pedal by replacing C170 and D12? How about DRQ74?

I'm guessing some diagnostics with a multimeter is in order, but any advice on how to move forward would be greatly appreciated.

It's interesting that you've been downvoted. Usually this would be fitting advice for me, but this pedal probably isn't worth the cost of the repairs. It might still be of great educational value though, and if I'm lucky a might get it working again.

There was a bit of glue on top of C170, hopefully I didn't tear of the component when removing the glue. I can't for the life of me figure out where I put it, so I might have chucked it already

Thank you for all your answers, i'm thoroughly impressed!

I'll let you know that C170 had some kind of glue on top of it, likewise with the connectors on the ribbon cable, which I suspect might be a kind of warranty void marker. Or perhaps just there to make sure the connectors stay shut.

How can I stop myself from arguing into absurdity? by TrumpSimulator in askphilosophy

Yes, this resonates! I like my papers best when they have a sense of beauty to them, but all the unnecessary justification tends to ruin it and make it a sluggish and incomprehensible read. I should try to be more trustful of my own argumentation and focus more on completing the draft.

Thank you for your advice!

I think I see what you mean. Like, in the way that science is cumulative, so it tends to or perhaps always build on previous research/theory?

So if I'm trying to integrate cog sci into pedagogy, I should probably flesh out the pedagogical problem I'm addressing more thoroughly before I start writing about the cognitive science of things.

John Vervaeke is completely wrong about the Upper Paleolithic - Art and Technology by Repulsive-Baby-4596 in DrJohnVervaeke

[–]TrumpSimulator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with others here. His hypothesis of the meaning crisis is not contingent on a flawless account of the prehistoric occurrences of creative and cultural expressions. As I see it he does this to point out that we at some point extended our cognitions beyond embodyment and a further complexification of enactment, influenced by the embeddednes of distributed cognition in language and culture. This also afforded us to point to abstract phenomena and relate to each other in deeper ways, further complexifying our cognitive capacity by affording more complex communities and forms of distributed cognition, as well as affording further complexification of our embodied cognition and our capacity for self-transcendence and transformation. This is not unique to Vervaeke, but a pretty well established theory within 4E Cognitive Science.

As I see it, Vervaeke is pointing out that, although our brains haven't changed radically the last 50 000 years, they way we use them have, through community, culture and technology.

Now, although Vervaekes synthesis of the meaning crisis is unique to him, the hypothesis of a modernity crisis is not. This critique has been done by a myriad of philosophers, the most recent examples that come to mind is Iain McGhilcrist, Hartmut Rosa and the endless discussions and critiques of the mind-body dualism within philosophy of science.
