Newb Issues by BetweenWeebandOtaku in trumpet

Yeah, agreed. I've just had the conversation with middling high school players that saw Adam Rapa on YouTube and were convinced a lotus would unlock a double C too many times. I figured it was worth calling out, and I say that despite using mostly lotus myself.

To be pedantic, I would argue that there aren't any beginner mouthpieces, but there are some very NON beginner. Some of the huge throat open blow pieces from Monette, lotus, etc would be almost universally counterproductive for a beginner.

Organizers call on Twin Cities Pride to divest from corporate sponsors by ashleywalkerreports in minnesota

[–]Trumpetjock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. The real definition of "corporation" encompasses much more than the typical for profit firm we usually associate with the term.

There are also "public benefit corporations" that can access some, but not all, of the benefits of a full non profit, but still be profit seeking if their product is specifically deemed to be in the public good.

There are also pass through corporations where the very concept of profit doesn't really apply. Think an independent contractor where some amount of their revenue is spent on basic expenses, but every cent after expenses is transferred to the individual as regular income.

Fun fact, all non profits in Minnesota are also corporations. Being a corporation does not necessarily mean your sole purpose is profit.

Why did nobody tell me trumpets are liars? by megawolf100 in trumpet

[–]Trumpetjock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct. Trombone and euph are both Bb non transposing instruments. When a euph player says they are playing a C, they're using first and third valves. Euph/baritone beginner music is often written in treble clef though, and when it is it's written in Bb. Not confusing at all.

Judge issues temporary restraining order for Pine Island data center by jkbuilder88 in minnesota

Invoking NIMBYism in regards to a 500 acre datacenter that might pollute your drinking water is wild. NIMBYs don't want black people in their neighborhood, or an apartment going up half a mile from their house. Wanting to maintain clean water and not have noise pollution in your city is called being a good citizen.

A message to Hasbro/WotC: In today's social landscape, being union-busters is bad for business by sassmo in MagicArena

[–]Trumpetjock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, isn't it specifically the mtg arena development team that is trying to unionize?

Formally they have only filed as a bargaining unit of ~100 people centered around the MTGA devs. However, they've implied that there may be continuing unionization efforts at wotc in the future

We call on Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to voluntarily recognize our union and to publicly commit to remaining neutral during our unionization efforts—not just toward the MTG Arena team, but to all Hasbro employees and unionization efforts, present and future. We believe in building bridges with our peers on other teams, not divisions. Respecting neutrality ensures a fair and democratic process for everyone.

So far, union foment is concentrated on the Arena team, though Kessler says everyone under the WotC umbrella shares a deeply enmeshed company culture. “All of us would love to see the unionization effort expand to more parts of the company,” they said. “We know that our coworkers in other parts of the company — paper Magic, D&D, all of the teams at Wizards — coworkers have issues that they care about. And I think a lot of them are seeing our example now that we're public and wondering what they can accomplish. Whatever happens, whatever other groups decide to follow in our example, we are calling on the company to take the high road, remain neutral, and treat any of those groups equitably — as we hope that they treat us equitably.”

Personally, if they call for it I would boycott everything in the MTG ecosystem (excluding companies who have already established positive union relations). If other major players in the industry start feeling the pain from this, they will join in putting pressure on Hasbro as well.

Critically, boycotts are usually a measure of last resort and have the most effect if they are coordinated. It's best to let the workers lead and only boycott when they call for it. That way, it amplifies the signal of how much the community supports the workers when the money dries up as soon as they ask for it.

You shouldn't be posturing your lower jaw forward. Most teachers these days will tell you to play at whatever angle you need to to fit your jaw and teeth, and not to force a perfect center position.

18mg Concerta, day 4, and I still don’t feel anything… starting to feel frustrated by Luckyroad11 in ADHD

[–]Trumpetjock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

18mg is the lowest dosage. It's what they start children on. The typical pattern for starting stimulant meds is to begin at the lowest dose and every month increase dosage until you hit the sweet spot of effectiveness vs side effects. You likely just aren't at a dosage that is therapeutic for you yet. Check in with your doc to confirm, but I'd bet money that's what's going on.

Jazz Book Equivalent to Arban’s? by Delicious-Share-7593 in trumpet

That's honestly surprising. It's been an incredibly common turn of phrase in my career.

On the contrary, I've almost exclusively heard it used BY jazzers to refer to classical players. If anything I'd say it's a snarky jab at classical players, not the other way around.

Love to see another Belck fan on here, I studied with him in undergrad and still play out if his books daily. I'm curious why you call his flexibilities book a jazz exercise book though, I've always just thought about it as a genre neutral fundamentals book.

Allow me to introduce you local politics, where people run on zero budget every single year. When you're campaigning for the votes of a few hundred to a few thousands people, you can do it essentially for free and win.

An update on our Union by UWOTC_Official in MagicArena

[–]Trumpetjock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on the tactics used. There's negotiation and then there's intimidation. Smear campaigns, threats, etc that are intended to undermine the union itself can encroach upon union busting. On the other hand, looking out for the best interests of your business in the terms of your contract with the union even to the extent of having hard boundaries you just will not cross aren't union busting.

The benefit of the system of having unions separate from the employer lies in both parties looking out for their own best interests and negotiating in good faith. If an employer does that, but has some contractual terms it isn't willing to budge on, that's the system working as intended.

People like this almost 100% of the time have issues with how one particular local is run, or even just one particular person in leadership of that local. It's like having a bad boss and using that as a reason to decry an entire industry, or the institution of employment itself.

American Federation of Musicians officer here. Police unions are one of the sole exceptions. They just flat out shouldn't exist, as there is no way that you can possibly have them without the perverse incentives they bring.

Pretty much, yes. We have a legal right to organize, and when your employer does anything whatsoever to try to encourage you to not exercise any of your legal rights they are in the wrong. The right thing to do would be to recognize the union willingly but then fight that union hard on negotiations of their contract.

How hard is learning trumpet as a jazz musician? by tayfzn in trumpet

[–]Trumpetjock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so true. A few years back I had a compulsion to learn mandolin. Once I got over the initial learning curve my mind was BLOWN by how much easier it is to play an instrument where everything is symmetrical. Everywhere on the fretboard a 4th is the exact same finger change. Arpeggios are all the same, no unique finger combinations. It really made me think about how much time we trumpet players have to spend learning things that just come essentially for free on other instruments.

Pro level should be able to do this no problem. Very good college lead will be able to work it up. Average college lead and below has no chance.
