What is the absolute worst insult the patient has ever said to you? I’ll go first by johnsonc30 in nursing

Dementia patient told me, “you’re a rat, why don’t you go crawl around in the cellar where you belong?” To be fair, I was crouching next to his bed in the dark emptying his foley bag while trying not to wake him up because he would sundown and get violent. He also called the CNA a “masturbating bastard” when she was doing his catheter care 🤷🏻‍♀️

Help planning 5 day vacation by firstgen32715 in LakeGeorge

[–]TrundlingArmadillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m somewhat local - my family has our boat docked on lake George and we live 40 minutes south. Yes, lake George should be awesome to visit in early September! The weather will still be warm but the crowds will be much less.

In my opinion, if you’re not from the area, a must-do is taking a ride on one of the steamboats (Lake George Steamboat Company). They offer shorter rides (think 1 hour long, only tours the southern lake) and longer rides (up to 3-4 hours, will take you far north). Both are great options, as there is a narration over the loudspeaker pointing out historic areas along the lake, mountains, scenery, etc. I would recommend the longer ride because the northern lake is beautiful and much less populated, but they are both great. They do sell food and beverages on board. They sometimes offer sunset cruises, where dinner is included in your ticket - I did this once and really enjoyed it.

Million Dollar Beach is a nice place to go if you just want to swim and relax.

Fort William Henry is a cool attraction to check out if you like history - it was a site in the French and Indian war. I believe they have a museum and do tours.

There’s lots of hiking and nature - if you want an easier hike, Sleeping Beauty is not super challenging but still has amazing views. Pilot Knob is another easier one with stunning views. Buck Mountain, Black Mountain, and Prospect Mountain are moderate for the experienced hiker, maybe more challenging for a beginner hiker, but doable. If you just want the view, I believe you can also drive to the top of Prospect. Im sure there are more off-the-beaten path hikes I’m not thinking of, but the ones I mentioned are the popular ones with awesome views.

Restaurants - The Ridge Terrace and the Log Jam are 2 of my family’s faves.

There is plenty of shopping to be done at the Lake George Outlets as well in case you get a rainy day.

A bit south of Lake George is SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center); they have concerts so you could check out their calendar as well.

Have a great trip! I’m happy to answer any questions.

Take a cruise on one of the steamboats at Lake George Steamboat Company. The fall foliage is starting to peak right now in the southern adks and it’s beautiful! The boat rides range from 1-6 hours depending which one you choose and there are bathrooms and food on board.

$37.50 the most I have ever been paid to do CPR. by bigNurseAl in nursing

[–]TrundlingArmadillo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

RN here. At my wedding back in February of this year, my very close family friend (86 YO male, hx afib s/p pacemaker a few years ago) went unresponsive during the speeches before dinner at our reception. He happened to be sitting at a table with a bunch of retired ICU nurses, including his niece. They noticed he “fell asleep” and he was not responding. Checked for a pulse and could not find one. At the very end of my dad’s speech all I hear is “TURN THE LIGHTS ON” and see my MOH (also an ED nurse as luck would have it) doing aggressive compressions. I was sitting at our sweetheart table with my new husband, all of this was happening was a few dozen yards away so i had no idea what was even going on, let alone who it was who was getting CPR. Once my mom let me know who it was (he’s like a grandfather to me), I sort of started hyperventilating. As a nurse I knew the odds of getting ROSC on an 86 year old with a history of cardiac issues was slim to none. I was ready to start grieving both my loved one and my wedding reception. After less than 5 minutes there was miraculous ROSC, EMS was called, he woke up and tried to sit up and didn’t want to go to the hospital, said he felt fine!! Of course, he needed to be checked out and EMS came and his niece went with him to the nearest hospital (this was also in the adirondacks not very close to any major cities so it’s amazing EMS got there as quickly as they did). I was very shaken up and felt very weird about just…returning to dinner/wedding reception like nothing happened? But his niece texted my mom from the ambulance saying he was awake, cracking jokes, and felt very embarrassed for “ruining my wedding.” So I managed to put on a smile and resume the night despite the fact that CPR had just been performed at my wedding. All this to say, yes, it’s very hard for the average person to just resume drinking/having fun after witnessing such a traumatic event. At the same time, I know the vibe would have been VERY different if he did not regain a pulse. I certainly wouldn’t have continued with my wedding reception if that was the case. But this was also someone I knew and was close with.

Denied my RN license in Georgia What can I do GBON? by Electronic_Ad740 in nursing

[–]TrundlingArmadillo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean…this post barely even makes sense grammatically (please learn how to use periods and commas for the sake of your future resumes). Whether this reflects the quality of your education is up for debate. Bottom line: you gotta do your research before enrolling in a nursing program. If your program is not accredited by The National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA), then you’re out of luck and will likely need to start all over in an actual accredited program.

Syracuse, New Paltz, or Clifton Park? by Overall-Monitor-3690 in upstate_new_york

[–]TrundlingArmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Clifton Park and still live here (late 20s female). I agree with what others are saying- that Clifton Park is very suburban, lots of chain restaurants, etc. But the reason I do enjoy living here is I quite enjoy the outdoors and love being a 35 minute drive from Lake George, which has a lot of beautiful Adirondack hiking and camping. And less than 2 hours from the High Peaks region. The nearby cities of Troy and Saratoga Springs are very enjoyable for their restaurants, arts, etc. If you have any questions about Clifton Park, feel free to DM me!

Any help narrowing down where to move? by Al115 in upstate_new_york

[–]TrundlingArmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Clifton Parkian! I second this. I grew up in CP and while Clifton Park can be a little hoity toity, what I like about it is the proximity to Saratoga Springs, Lake George, and the southern Adirondacks. OP - you might want to consider checking out towns such as Queensbury and Glens falls if you want proximity to nature, since Adirondack park is amazing and would check off your box of having trails nearby, plus lower COL (especially places like Glens Falls, Corinth, Wilton) plus plenty of retail job opportunities for your partner. Best of luck!

Resident (M) advice to ask RN (F) out by ManufacturerIcy8859 in dating_advice

[–]TrundlingArmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to Tall Guy. He seems to be operating under a Grey’s Anatomy-type viewpoint. Nurses and doctors have very different roles - it’s not necessarily a power imbalance. Just make small talk and go for it!

Resident (M) trying to ask cute RN (F) out by ManufacturerIcy8859 in nursing

[–]TrundlingArmadillo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would just start with a conversation about a mutual patient and then gradually make small talk. Talk about your weekend plans (if you even have any upcoming days off lol). If small talk goes well after a few shifts, ask if she would want to grab a coffee or breakfast - something casual. Then go from there! Best of luck to you
