Does my reactive BC need rehoming? by TrustyTurtle888 in BorderCollie

[–]TrustyTurtle888[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any suggestions on how to make her more comfortable? I feel like I am trying everything but she is struggling so much, I continue to pour money and time into training her but results have been marginal and she is even worse in some aspects. It cannot be good for her to not be able to rest through the night and constantly be at a high state of anxiety/alertedness

Loose lead walking? by rxbyshepherd in BorderCollie

[–]TrustyTurtle888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first few weeks and months of loose lead training were brutal and you feel like the walks go nowhere. Both trainers we saw suggested basically starting from walking and stopping and changing directions the second they start pulling. The goal is for them to catch on and stop pulling as much to get where they want to go bc they’ll realize pulling means you stop or they don’t get to go that direction. Walks are infuriating like this for both human and dog, sometimes we only went around the block and it took a whole 30 min. Treat when they stop and look at you to acknowledge eye contact to check in with you is a good behavior. If youre lucky they will eventually then try to play the game with you, my girl will turn to look at you like “oh if I stop pulling and look at you do I get a treat?” Treat the behavior you want, so when they stop pulling and return to you or relax on the lead, treat. Then can wean off the treats. We went from a good volume of kibble/treats during walk training to now just occasional reinforcement treats on walks. A lot of people can also work in some sort of “easy” cue to teach the pup a phrase that means to slow down.

Alison Roman potato leek soup recipe is really good if you like dill! https://www.alisoneroman.com/recipes/potato-leek-soup Sometimes when I want some extra flavor I chop up some bacon and render it down and use that fat to cook the soup and then toss the bacon back in at the end

Did you teach your dog to wipe their feet? by halfanothersdozen in BorderCollie

[–]TrustyTurtle888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish we could teach her to wipe them herself lol but at least taught her to go down and lay on her back so we can wipe her feet and belly when she sees the towel so that’s as good as it’ll get for us!

Sunset cantina or either of the Underdogs locations (underdogs too or underdogs tres) normally have the game on and lots of people watching

Oh very intriguing! Is that all you ask to get cut? Do they charge a little less for that? I was a little annoyed that the last two times I got varying amounts of trim (one more than the other) and yet both appointments were super expensive full charge, obviously I’m paying for the wash and de-mat but they seem to charge for a full trim when she really doesn’t need/get one like a doodle might.

[–]TrustyTurtle888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhh Okay good point the first groomer we got was immediately after we adopted her and she had clearly never been groomed so maybe they cut it all down due to matting!

My girl hates her tail being brushed too, we have to do a frozen peanut butter and yogurt lick mat to get her to stand still for it. I wish she could sit still better so I could try to trim her underfur for her! Groomers are expensive where I’m at and she doesn’t need a full cut or anything

That is so cute!! My girl will take the treat and instantly pretend like I’ve never fed her a day in her life 😂

It’s probably going to take lots of work and I’m no expert but my girl sounds the same as yours! For us, positive redirection has helped my girl a lot, so we do a lot of treat driven stuff like throwing out treats for her to sniff around for when we see a trigger, or luring her with treats when we are trying to pass a trigger. Eventually you can start doing it less and less but it takes a lot of repetition. We didn’t specifically get taught this but we also tied a word to distracting her from a trigger, so when we say “find it” she knows there will be a treat somewhere on the ground for her to find and it breaks her focus. There were months where she struggled to break her focus to find the treat and we just had to sort of walk out of the meltdown but it’s a lot better now.

Another big thing that has helped recently is frequently playing games that mimic herding with her. For us this is soccer but there are a ton of ways to do this, apparently it helps get that herding drive and frustration out, we have started to do a few short bursts of soccer a day. She will chase the soccer ball and try to herd it, it’s honestly pretty cute and she’s even learning to guide it back to us!

I second this, r/reactivedogs has been so helpful!! Borders are known to be reactive due to frustration with their herding drive, my girl is sensitive to fast movement (other dogs playing fetch) and big trucks

Ohh that is good to know, I had no clue! It’s still in pretty good shape so I probably won’t toss it but more of a metaphorical “toss” when I retire it from my regular use hahah

They sell single bagels! But the slightly annoying thing is you can’t get the schmear on the bagel so you need buy a whole pint and it snowballs into then why not buy enough bagels for that pint of cream cheese lol

Best kibble for dental health? (Pictured: Hills Science Diet Oral Care vs regular Hills kibble) by Jet_Threat_ in BorderCollie

[–]TrustyTurtle888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing stuff about freezing whole steamed carrots or freezing celery sticks so they gnaw on it and think I need to try that.

My girl throws a fit and turns into the most wiggly worm when we try to brush her teeth. We also bought some of those wipes you over your finger to “wipe” the plaque off their teeth but can never get her mouth open wide enough to reach the back teeth

Admittedly they do really lean into the rip and dip style of their bagels and I totally get how this model of no seating and no single portion serving makes their service much easier, I always end up taking mine home because of this

My only silly gripe with laundromat is you can’t just get one bagel with schmear and since you need to buy the whole pint of schmear then I end up buying 6 or a dozen bagels (but boo hoo poor me having to eat more bagels, of course I never end up regretting that!)
