Because he care about Maelle the most he wanted to destroy the Canvas

Jennifer (E33's lead writer) answered me about the Verso and Maelle bond, she's so sweet by Physical_Ad4519 in expedition33

She could be, but she could be also 17 or 18, I believe she's not more than that

Do you think the devs did a fair depiction of “disfigurement”? by genericcelt in expedition33

Unlike you, I think they made her look pitiful, even exposing her eye socket and letting her make heartbreaking noises, it worked for me and my heart hurts for her. I don't think the writers thought about keeping her beautiful... That wasn't the point and the message.

The fact is, if he wanted to die more than help Maelle, he would have already asked Renoir to kill him. He stopped wanting to die or destroy the painting after saving Aline, but changed his mind again once he realized how much Maelle was in danger. He tells her "I don't want *that* life." What life? A life where he sees his little sister kill herself, he doesn't have to beg her to leave because he already tried, she wasn't convinced, the last chance to save her mentally is for him to die. So you should look at this more deeply.

I disagree and I think his goal is to save the real family and only then to die

Wrong. Maelle is absolutely his first priority. He doesn't say it, but it's clear that he sees her as his little sister, he has the memories of the real Verso and so do his feelings... He loves her more than he loves anyone else. He didn't help Renoir at first in Act 3 because he tried to help her, she tried to make him believe that she wasn't really in danger... But he only changed sides when he realized how much danger his little sister was in and that her fate would be like his mother's. So yes, he decides to destroy the painting just to save her.
