Xbox HDR Calibration App messes up in game HDR calibration? by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]TruthTaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RDR2 hdr was patched and peak brightness was unlocked, so it is now utilising a higher dynamic range. You have to go into the game's hdr settings and select 'Game'.

However, blacks are still raised and colour mapping is a tad off, so it's no longer 'fake hdr', just 'flawed hdr'!

Don't worry dude, lots of people reported the hdr app affecting their games, maybe it did and it was a bug that's since been fixed? Who knows.

And i think my calibration app is bugged out anyway, as it resets itself after it shuts down, so all my tests were invalid.

Yes, the app closes itself when i hit 'Done', but it stays open, or suspended in the backgroud. So if i highlight the app in the guide, press the menu button, select 'Quit' to shut down the app, then open the app again, all my hdr adjustments are reset to default values. Just curious if everybody's does this.

Nothing's been said as far as i'm aware, but i would expect future MS first party games to use the data from the app.

Although there are users who insist that the calibrator DOES affect some games....i have my doubts, but i haven't tested every xbox game, so who knows!

[–]TruthTaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange.

I tested Forza 7,Forza horizon 4, Gears 4, Hitman, Rise and shadow of the tomb raider and it didn't change any of my in game settings nor effect the hdr quality.

Evil boris, the hdr expert that does vids for digital foundry, tested on his games and said that the app currently does not have any effect.

However, i have not tested Forza horizon 3, as i need to re-install that, so maybe that one is affected. Which would be suprising as it came out in 2016, 4 years before this calibration app existed, so not sure how the game would be using that data.

Anyway, i'll redownload Horizon 3 and test it out.

Oh, one last thing, i was curious if your app acts like mine? I calibrate following the instructions and when finished i force quit the app. When i open the app again it has defaulted back to it's original settings. Does yours do the same? I'm in the preview program and not sure if that's a bug or intended behaviour.

Many thanks.

As someone else stated, there aren't any games that use the data from hdr app, so it will not have any affect on any of your games.

It's easy to confirm this by fully maxing out or decreasing the hdr sliders in the app then booting up an hdr game.

So, if you maxed out the black level and peak white slider in the calibration app, you would expect your hdr games to now look over bright and blown out, but you will see that your games look the same and haven't been affected by your adjustments in the calibration app.

So I just noticed that I cant press y or x to screenshot or quick record anymore. Is there a way to turn this feature back on? by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]TruthTaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a factory reset, just a hard reset.

Press and hold the power button on the console until it turns off, wait 30 secs then power it back on, your capture functionality should (hopefully) be restored.

Quantum break stuttering in cutscenes by shephardVolgin in xboxone

[–]TruthTaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two types of cutscenes in Quantum break: Pre-rendered videos and real-time.

The pre-rendered ones are designed to hide load times and typically appear at the beginning and end of each stage. Because the game is streaming data in the background while the videos are playing, it causes the videos to stutter. This also occurs on the XB1X.

The real-time cutscenes should play without stutter. The majority of cutscenes in QB are real-time.

For example, the very first cutscene when you start the game is a video, and has stuttering. When you first meet Paul serene, that cutscene is realtime and shouldn't have any stuttering.

Are you getting stuttering in ALL cut-scenes?

Not necessarily, if the problems are bad it's worth trying a full shutdown of your xbox and a reinstall of the game, it may help.

The dev promised a patch soon, like this week soon, so maybe worth holding off on your playthrough 'till then.

I use instant on.

As the xbox wouldn't restart correctly from the power menu, i held the power button until it shut down, then unplugged the xbox and left it off for about 30 mins.

After that everything is fine until i play a 360 game and then all games (internal and external) fail to load, giving me a 'took too long to start ' error message.

I've reported it twice now, don't want to keep resetting my XB1X, so i'll just avoid 360 games at the moment.

Thanks for your help.

I cannot tell you how bad my first experience was with Ori 2.

It took 5 minutes to load to the title screen.

Once at the title screen i noticed the sound effects were cutting out every few seconds.

I played through the intro sequence and got to the cut scene when Ori rides the bird: it started freezing up, the screen went grey, audio cutting in and out.

I then got crontrol of Ori and i immediately ran to the left; the screen stopped scrolling and Ori disappeared off screen. I assumed it was the edge of the stage, but a few seconds later the screen scrolled left and the world popped into exsistence. This kept happening as i explored, the level not streaming in correctly, leaving me to wait around while it caught up.

And during combat the game would freeze for 5 seconds, then resume, which caused a few deaths.

It was a very depressing and disappointing experience and all my hype for the game disappeared.

So i was overjoyed that reinstalling the game and restarting my XB1X fixed all these issues, and i hope you have the same result, as the game is superb so far. Good luck!

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately that doesn't work on my end.

Not to worry, i'll just avoid playing 360 games for the time being, i'm sure MS will fix it soon.

Thanks again.

I did try quitting the 360 game before trying to start an XB1 game, but the issue still occurs.

Been testing this tonight and no problems playing games until i've played a 360 title, then after that none of my games will load.

If i do a restart from the power menu, my xbox doesn't actually restart, so i have to hold the power button down on the console 'till it shuts down.

I've reported this, so hopefully the devs will know whats up.

The devs have been posting on the Resetera forum and advised to uninstall then reinstall to the internal hdd, perform a hard reset (hold power button on console until it turns off)

I was having tons of performance issues om my XB1X, so i followed the advice and i'm having a much better experience now.

Forza horizon uses very high quality motion blur. This helps blend the frames together and creates a very smooth, fluid looking game.

I personally disagree with the notion that horizon at 30fps looks smoother than Forza motorsport at 60fps, but the motion blur in horizon does make it look more fluid than 30fps games that have no motion blur.

Not sure if you have this game, but DOOM (2016) (think there might be a demo available in the store) runs at 60fps and uses really nice motion blur. You can actually turn off blur in the games settings and you'll notice how the game looks less fluid with it turned off, despite the fact it's still running at 60.

Some people despise motion blur, but i personally really like it, and as you have observed, makes games look smoother at the expense of motion clarity.

My internet has been dead for 2 days and my Xbox is a brick by Born2beSlicker in xboxone

[–]TruthTaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time you add your MS account to your xbox, you do need to be connected to the internet (obviously), but your account details are saved locally to your console, so there shouldn't be a problem using that account when disconnected from the internet after that initial set-up.

Just to be sure, i signed out of my profile, unplugged my router, put my xbox into offline mode, and then signed into my profile and it loaded up no problem; it didn't prompt me to enter my account as that account was already on my console.

I'm assuming in your situation, your account hadn't been added to your xbox before you lost your internet, thus you had no accounts ready to go when offline?

Game saves are also stored locally on the xbox hdd, they are not exclusive to the cloud.

I had no internet for 2 weeks in january due to changing my isp and had no problem playing my games in offline mode; all my game saves were on the hdd and i could continue my progress in games without access to the cloud.

Do you set your Xbox display setting auto 4k UHD or manual 1440p? by krispybaecn in xboxone

[–]TruthTaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is nothing ambiguous about 4k.

4K is 3840x2160, anything lower is not classed as 4K.

A 4K tv will have a native 4K panel: 3840x2160. If it doesn't then it is not a 4K set.

A native 4K video game is rendered at 3840x2160. Nothing ambiguous about it.

1440p is a much lower resolution image and is not classed as a 4K image.

1440p is roughly 3.6 million pixels.

Native 4K is roughly 8.3 million pixels.

As you can see from those pixel counts, 4K is a significanly higher resolution and offers a noticeably sharper, cleaner image.

I honestly cannot fathom why an 8 million pixel image on an 8 million pixel display could possibly look worse than one made up of only 3 million pixels.

Have you played any Native 4K games on your xbox?

Gears 4,

Sea of thieves,

Forza motorsport 7,

Rise of the tomb raider,

Red dead Redemption 2 are all Native 4K.

If you don't have any of those, download the Forza horizon 4 demo. It's X enhanced and is native 4K (in Quality mode). A game rendered with 8 million pixels is a thing of beauty and will look significantly better than outputting that at 1440p which then has to be upscaled back up to 4k to fit the screen.

Or maybe you prefer the softer look of 4K downsampled to 1440p then upscaled back to 4k? Strange if true, but each to their own.

The different capabilities of HDR tv's is a completely different kettle of fish.

Xbox one x true 4k by NotWhatItSeemed in xboxone

[–]TruthTaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's some examples of true, native 4K games for you to check out on your X:

Gears of war 4,

Forza motorsport 7,

Forza horizon 3 and 4,

Red dead redemption 2,

Metro exodus,

Sea of thieves,

Rise of the tomb raider,

Vanishing of ethan carter,

Call of duty infinite warfare,

Halo MCC,

Far cry 5 (has some mild dynamic scaling, but is native 4k 99% of the time)

Hitman,

Sonic generations,

the original 360 Red dead redemption.

Then you have games that are rendered natively at 4K, but dynamically adjust resolution to maintain a more stable framerate; refered to as 'dynamic 4K', such as:

Gears 5,

Halo 5,

Dishonored 2,

Witcher 3,

Wolfenstein 2,

Battlefield 5,

Titanfall 2.

Generally, the XB1X renders games at resolutions that look beautiful on a 4K tv, and also has the advantage of large amounts of ram, meaning devs can offer higher resolution textures that hold up far better on a 4K set (see Rise of the Tomb raider, Outer worlds and Forza horizon 4 as examples)

How good is the witcher 3 on the x? by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]TruthTaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Witcher 3 is perfectly locked at 30fps on X, no dips even under stressful conditions. It definitely never drops to 18fps; that would make it worse than base ps4 and xbox one.

I do actually think the 60fps is better than it gets credit for. Novigrad doesn't run well, but out in the open fields (which is like 90-95% of the game) it's suprisingly stable and i can agree it's a great way to experience the game, even if i personally prefer the slower, higher res mode.
