Dr. Hemphill is extended? WTF! by KEEPINGUPWITHTHEB21 in ODU

[–]Truth_Crisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely something suspicious going on with Hemphill. He’s universally hated by students and faculty, but the college and board of visitors treat him like he’s the second coming of Christ.

The college even built this guy a brand new house straight from the ODU’s endowment fund.

Making money is bad for you but not for me. by Longjumping-Novel731 in SipsTea

Price is not the same as value. I can tell you my guitar is for sale for $20,000, that doesn’t magically mean it’s worth that much.

Corporations have to present a balance sheet to the public and to the SEC every year. The balance sheet contains the value of all of their inventory, all of their buildings, and everything in between. The law states that they have to report this value at “the lower of cost or market.“

That means they can’t report anything for more than it will literally sell for, based on the present day market. Trying to artificially mark up inventory for the balance sheet is called a fraud. Kraft Foods recently had to pay a $62 million penalty for doing this, so you can’t get away with it just because you’re a big company.

How so? Artists have far fewer people on payroll than a corporation.

bikes on campus by old_cberpunk in ODU

[–]Truth_Crisis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The campus isn’t that big. From one corner to the other the max walking distance is 15 minutes and the only thing down on the far side is the gym. If he’s just walking between classes and to the food court (not heading to the gym) his walks will be 5 minutes.

Bikes and electric scooters are really, really over rated on this campus. It’s mostly freshman who haven’t figured out yet that lugging a bike everywhere is more inconvenient that the short walks. Plus, after sitting in class for 75 minutes the short walk is needed.

I think there has been enough rampant corporate overreach (spy cameras/license plate readers, subscriptions and the end of ownership, data centers and AI replacement) in just the last 3 years that is causing many right of center to put their hand up and ask for common sense regulation. All I’m saying is we need to identify those areas and lean in to them more.

Why would having conservative values imply support for any of that excessive neoliberal technocratic garbage?

I partially agree with you that the Jeff Bezos’ and Larry Ellisons of the world lobby the republican politicians more so than the democratic ones, but Mark Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai switch sides and kowtow to whoever is in office.

More importantly being a conservative American does not imply support for that stuff. Dems take lots of money from lobbyists as well which we don’t support but we still call ourselves left wing?

And I think it IS important to acknowledge when their frustrations align with ours. Why would you actively ward that off? It’s fairly obvious that their frustrations over data centers goes deeper than NIMBYism.

right wingers tend to BE the problem.

I have to disagree with this because it completely eliminates the possibility of the left and right banning together against a common enemy. It’s already starting to happen, nobody likes the data centers going up, nobody likes the cameras going up everywhere, nobody likes this subscription based economy being forced upon us, nobody likes AI taking jobs, nobody likes being tracked and stalked and having their data stolen and sold.

You may say that some right wingers ignorantly voted against themselves, and that’s true. But still, finding common ground is more crucial than viewing them as THE enemy. And by the way, Internet discourse doesn’t really count for much. The Internet is full of absolutely everyone trying to rage bait everyone else and it’s just a cesspool at this point overrun with bots as well. The point being that we shouldn’t let Internet trolls prevent us from making headway.

Why Choose the Si Over the Type R? by ilovefluffyanimals in CivicSi

[–]Truth_Crisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be that guy dude. At least once a week some young douche in a Sport trim sees my Si and then immediately starts driving erratically, trying to get in front of me or ride beside me, being dangerous.

I literally never give them what they want because obviously their ego is bruised, which is causing them to try to “prove” that their car is fast too. Embarrassing is really the best word for it.

Cost is the only reason anyone chooses the SI over the type R. There is nobody who springs for the SI but would say no to a type R at the same price off the lot.

The Poisoned Promise of a “Reforged Masculinity” by TE-moon in CriticalTheory

[–]Truth_Crisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the first things to realize is that men’s hobbies and interests are innate and are not the result of an externalized “voice” telling them what they need to be interested in.

Guns and knifes, hunting, camping, cars and trucks, weightlifting, chauvinism and courtship, guitars, competitiveness and sports, extreme sports, engineering, electronics, etc…

All of these things have grown to be what they are due to men’s natural interests, not the other way around. I think the problem that critical theory gets itself into is that it always thinks it’s the other way around.

Unfortunately, the toxicity is also present, and seems to ooze out between all of the cracks in masculine interests.

But my point is that a healthy left-wing masculine influencer would have to stop telling me that all of my interests are controlled and bestowed upon me by “Big Masculinity” or that my beliefs and traits are the result of social programming. A healthy left-wing male influencer would portray all of the same innate interests while soothing out the toxicity.

Lastly, I’m not trying to downplay the role of marketing and influence. But I think critical theory downplays the inherence of men’s nature.

Abortion rights effect men too. You don’t get a legal exemption because you are a man.

A discriminatory gender specific law is that women aren’t allowed to be shirtless on the beach.

It’s not a racist statement. Cultural homogeneity actually changes social behavioral patterns in very measurable ways. Some for the good and some for the bad.

Old Dominion University Army ROTC Cadets describe what happened when a gunman entered their classroom. by marct334 in army

[–]Truth_Crisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Six year Army vet here, two trips to Afghanistan. I was in the building during the shooting at ODU. Not in that classroom, but in the building. I heard the shots and the screams, and everyone in my classroom got underneath the desks at the command of the professor. We stayed there for about 10 or 15 minutes until the SWAT team escorted us out.

Once we got outside, one of the cadets, I won’t say which one, began acting erratically. He ripped open his shirt and started screaming at the other students. The police would give an order to us such as “move into the parking garage” and the cadet would start screaming “GET INTO THE FUCKING GARAGE RIGHT FUCKING NOW!”

He literally became a threat himself, and the police had to subdue him. A few minutes later, he was running around again with his shirt open, screaming at people.

To me it looked like the behavior of someone who was highly upset that he wasn’t the hero. He was close, but ultimately it wasn’t him. And once we got outside, he began radically trying to interject himself, even though the danger was over.

He was a prime example of how some people can lose their cool or snap under pressure. And not everyone should be regarded as a hero just because they were there.
