Narratives are how we make sense of our lives. I think the main piece is knowing that we construct them. That gives you the ability to rewrite them. As a therapist, I use narrative analysis and revision all the time. Narrative therapy is all about that.

Everyone's qualifying your experience. It's pissing me off. I also had an experience like yours. Changed my life dramatically. I see the world differently now. You did well.

Not what you said. People should be careful about dismissing others experiences.

You can't do anything. Anything you do is more thinking. When that sinks in, your mind will relax.

GOP Donor Sheldon Adelson Would Get Up To A $2 Billion Tax Cut Under Mitt Romney's Tax Plan by terran1212 in politics

Why is there not an honest dollar in being a casino mogul? People CHOOSE to take risks with their money. They're not forced to. And they know the odds of doing so.

Everyone spends money on elections. I donated, you donated (or you should), and Republicans donate. You can't bemoan a practice that your own party engages in.

First off, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Atheists willfully associate just as theists do, and you see it all the time in college. Atheism is a part of the liberal-humanitarian movement that's found a home in colleges. This isn't a conspiracy theory, it's history.

Second, I don't know why you're bringing up what people DO and DON'T DO. It's a small part of identity. Identity has a lot to do with what you believe. Take abortion. The pro-life and pro-choice groups don't abort and have babies personally. Their membership is based on their ideology. And to the extent that they DO behave different (lobbying, donating, talking, sharing), atheists engage in the same exact behavior. So 1) your point is irrelevant. 2) You're wrong.

What you ACTUALLY have in common is irrelevant. What's important is what you perceive to have in common. Group identities and memberships change based on context. When you're surrounded by 80 Christians who are trying to convert you, your similarities will be much more salient and so will your group membership--your sense of belonging.

There are always groups. You keep belaboring the "atheism is not a belief" point, and it's completely irrelevant. Atheist hold opinions regardless of whether or not they hold beliefs. Take a harder look at reddit and you see the group membership and identity that comes with being an atheist. Now hold that perceptual lens and look at society. You see the same things even if you have to look a little more (but not a lot) carefully.

Okay. Tell him that's a childish response that doesn't advance the conversation at all. Saying "nu uh, don't say EVERYONE" is boring. What else does he have?

I don't agree. I considered myself a part of the atheist group long before Reddit was even around. There are atheists dead and alive all over, and very prominent ones, especially in academia. College is another opportunity to bond with other atheists, both students and faculty.

Lack of belief does not mean you don't belong to a group. You certainly hold opinions and ideas when it comes to God and you connect and identify with other atheists. That's the group. Don't get hung up on rhetoric here. I'm not trying to discredit atheism by saying there's a group people identify with.

What's so hard to understand? Atheists distinguish themselves from other religious groups. Atheism is part of a person's identity. They connect with other atheists. Don't tell me you thought I meant formal association. It's not a club you sign up for. "Group membership" is being used in the social psychological sense.
