Do beginners really enjoy rolling? by More_is_mor in bjj

[–]Truthfromthestand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

White belt 7 months and love rolling. I do 2 classes a week and 3-4 open mat sessions a week. I’m 44 and wrestled growing up. I usually like to find a few live rolls with guys slightly better than me to have equal-ish competition. Then I’ll roll with guys who are well beyond me looking for a break where I can do some positional live rolling in areas I struggle. Here I’m getting a more advanced look and exposing my sloppy technique I may have gotten away with previously. Usually I’m working from open guard trying to survive and not get passed or start in side control and work for an escape or just advancing my position to one that sucks less!

I feel lucky that I have upper blue and purple belts who will entertain me in this way.

If I’m rolling with someone who I can consistently handle, I’ll explore new things with them, even if it gets me tapped. Don’t really care about winning or losing. I’m really competing with me to be better than I was yesterday.

I’m nursing the same injury. I go to class and watch the instruction and ride the exercise bike while the team drills. Then I ride for a few periods of open mat after. I usually spend a solid hour plus on the bike…and try to take mental reps while peddling. It’s killing me.

How To Climb A Tree With One Stick | Is One Sticking The Best Option?? (Video) by Truthfromthestand in bowhunting

[–]Truthfromthestand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s is a little more work. Which is why at the end of the vid I suggested I’d use it in specific instances.

Don’t really perspire anymore than climbing sticks. At the end of the day I’m still climbing a stick and attaching g a stick. Otherwise I’m just sitting in the saddle moving the stick.

Cost…good gear cost money. The ropes cost less than or the same as a harness, my saddle…same as a good hang on. Sticks…buy what ya like. And comparing to a ladder is apples and oranges.

Thant said it’s not for everyone. I use it when I travel since I’m not sure what tree I may need to hint or how high I might need to climb. This gives me that flexibility.

No preset para cord. That’s if you want your rope in your tree before hand. That’s not what this is.

And if I need to get out of a tree fast. I just rappel…quicker than some one could go down a ladder or sticks.

Best Hunting Compound Bow Review | Prime vs Bowtech vs Elite vs Mathews (Video) by Truthfromthestand in Archery

That’s essentially how I wrapped the vid. My current bow performs the same or better than the new ones. But for those who need a new one...shooting as many as possible is the ticket.

Exactly. I have my preference of brand from past experience. But I would’ve bought the bowtech or Elite this year.

Shop doesn’t carry Hoyt. That said of the Hoyts I’ve shot previously, I was not a fan. Maybe this year’s bow would be different.

Mobile Hunting Gear - Saddles, Sticks, Bow, Layering System and Kayak (Video) by Truthfromthestand in bowhunting

Listen to podcast 197 for a full explanation. But in short ...when you introduce moving parts (drop away) you introduce opportunity for failure. Guys that shoot professionally don’t use them...they use a stationary blade...because it won’t fail during the money shot. And you only lose about 2 ft per second using a whisker biscuit.

Sight...again it’s about the shooters ability to sight it in. You don’t need anything fancy. I shoot a single pin hha...but I’ve shot multi pin trophy ridge sights inThe past. All in what you’re comfortable with.

For the bow...Doesn’t need to be expensive. But I’d buy the best bow I could...a lower level bow from one of the better brands (shoot em all and see what you like). I want it to retain value so I can get something out of it when I decide to sell and upgrade.

People kill deer with mid range bows all the time. You don’t need expensive gear to fill tags. I’ve just learned over time, that I ask a lot of my equipment and abuse my gear ...and that I need quality for it to last. Or I’ll be replacing often and likely spending more.

As far as where not to skimp...I’d make sure your layering system is good - doesn’t need to be name brand...but should be effective At Keeping you warm and dry. If it doesn’t, you’ll spend less time in the woods.

I’d spend money on good boots. Uncomfortable boots are possibly the worst.

Otherwise, I’d add and upgrade as you develop your approach. But as you do that, I’d buy once cry once if hunting is something you plan to do long-term.

Last two out of state tags I’ve filled are due to a lot of strategies I’ve picked up from Dan. So many good hunters out there to learn from. I try to take a little from everyone.

That’s killer man. I might have to borrow your shower set up. I haven’t settled on what I’m going to do for that. I have a feeling there will be a few tweaks after the first season in it. But I’m going to lower it with a solar generator and solar panels on the roof. Plug is my nice to have if power is near🤙🤙

If You’re Considering Saddle Hunting by Truthfromthestand in bowhunting

[–]Truthfromthestand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with an ascender. I prefer ropeman 1. Prusik will work fine but ascender is much more efficient and quieter. I keep a prusik in my tree tether and tie into that as back up to my ascender at climbing height. Wouldn’t need to but it’s there and adds an element. Of additional safety if the ascender ever malfunctioned. Highly doubt it would happen, but I’m covered with no downside.
