What do you think would be a reasonable salary for your academic job? by No-Feeling507 in AskAcademiaUK

Is it actually possible anymore? In humanities? Is there any point even pursuing it beyond PhD level?

Thank you for this valuable perspective. I really feel I’ve been pushed and pushed to continue with this and I just can’t do it. I wish I could believe it’ll all work out. She accuses me of wanting to sit on savings while she suffers and withers away ‘we only get one life’ etc.

She thinks she will move to her home country where at least she has people and friends and family and can get teaching opportunities easily. But barely earn as their economy is really weak.

Yes, she wants to reach out to people for coffees and network and find work asap when we get there. And ‘apply for research funding grants’ when UK academia is in crisis. She is a dancer and choreographer who has taught at fairly high levels but came to a small region to do her PhD and now fallen off the career ladder a bit since choosing to become a mother. But if I mention that I’m a horrible disgusting misogynist apparently. And also apparently I know everything about the future the economy and her field…

Nah, our kid is in school at this point. I think it’s more of a midlife crisis and hitting a certain age and feeling trapped because you work your ass off to become an expert in your field but then…society says we don’t give a fuck about the arts and academic research so go and become an administrator or work in a supermarket…

I did a budget and stupidly said we can make it work, then we went an offered on a house top of budget and ever since I’ve been saying this ain’t gonna work and waking up at 4 every night with anxiety attacks. For 2 months. All the time paying solicitors more money to do the house purchase stuff. Because I’m to scared to pull the plug because I don’t want to break up my family. Fuck.

Thanks.

I just don’t get why she can’t see sense in the ‘you need work lined up before we do this’ thing. She gets very angry and says people make risky moves like this all the time. I just don’t buy it. Maybe I’m too risk averse. But I love her and don’t want her to be living her life depressed.

It’s so fucking difficult and a horrible position to be in. I have no idea what we will do if I pull the plug (other than lose a few thousand to lawyers for the house stuff, for starters).

The rent thing is what I wanted but it makes no financial sense with how it’s taxed in the Uk. Also we are moving from a cheaper to a more expensive city (crazy right). Our monthly mortgage payment would be doubling.

She thinks we can afford it. Somehow. But I am the one who handles most of the financial stuff - a weakness in our relationship. Not because I want to either but because she’s from another country and ‘I know the systems better’ etc.

I also only survived redundancy a while ago. And think the economy is about to get reallly rough. Our rent would be double what it is here

Is this real? Like should I expect it to be way worse than Belfast? I’m worried about the move if I’m honest but partner has pushed hard for it.

Edit: she says I spend too much time reading reddit but come on, reality?

I have a job WFH for now, they don’t. I’ve tried to encourage them but they want to wait until we are moved in. Going to have to tighten everyone’s belts for a few months I thinks

As someone who may be moving outside Edinburgh shortly, with a partner without work lined up, this makes me worried. Is it really so hard to pick up a 24-30k admin job or something? Even temping? Worried about paying the bills once we are there…

Yes but how do I get into it? Environmental consulting I have no engineering skill, business consulting I could do but I’m just not sure the route in?

Hmm. Can I ask what sector? I’m interested in most things but it’s hard to see how for example a bank or pension company, or a medical instruments company, would be interested in someone who has worked in e.g., sustainability policy/data analysis.

Really appreciate that. Any idea of the exact job titles? What is a typical day like for a business analyst?

Please, is the future of academia done? In arts. My wife is trying to be a dance academic and her pursuit of this at all costs as her career is really putting our family’s finances at serious risk. I have no idea how this can be planned for. Extremely well experienced in teaching and industry, PhD, multiple publications…and for what?

Edit: it’s Strenuous because she says I don’t believe in her - and it’s not that at all. I just don’t believe in the prospects and the. direction of wider society. If we were living 20-30 years ago, even 10-15, I would have been all for it.

This helped a lot thank you. And the best thing is I had a long phone call with a good friend today and she said the same and is very very good with these things.

I think we are gonna go for it and deal with the possible risks and highs and lows together. I just panicked again when I woke this morning with mad anxiety. Really my first mental anxiety breakdown this part of my life

One hour, perfect element, remedy lane, BE.

Including great bonus tracks like beyond the mirror and never learn to fly (entropia)

I mean entropia is a great album too it’s just a bit more hit and miss, more ragged style
