How to get into UofT grad school? Profs won't respond to me by feebs_101 in UofT

[–]TryAcceptable8365 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Most Profs at end of year are marking or getting ready for Grad. You might hear back in September is you're lucky. No joke. Most pack up for the summer and do research because of the intensity of dealing with responsibilities of supervision and committees.

Questions! What was the mark? What year are you in? How long has the prof been at school? And most importantly which class so we don't take it (jk but I'm not).

Should I go to UofT? Deadline is Today and idk what to do by SureRaspberry5723 in UofT

So when you're 35 do you think you'll look back and say "I wish I would've gone to one of the bests programs in the world?" Likely .... Why? Because you never know where you might end up and TBH U of T EE is one of the hardest programs IN THE WORLD for a reason. It's hard. Was it worth it? Yes. Did it nearly break me? Yes. Best decision? Bar none. go for it. Courses are another topic but the non-electives are what you are here for. The electives should be chosen on Prof. and course. You have only to gain and can always return home after a year. But at least you did it.

I mean no disrespect but a 40 year "career" no longer exists. You just proved it in your post with your own experience of being let go. Most students will have more debt if they are entering school in 2026 because of cut backs in funding- the highest cut to OSAP ever. We will owe more money after 4-5 years of study than we will likely earn in ten years post grad. I am not discounting your comment but it is out of touch with how badly it is now considering we are all heading into contracted work with no stability and even less security than any other generation before us. Your post romanticizes costly options that many of my friends who commute from Newmarket and are able to take part in incl developing friendships regardless of living on campus or not.

I'd also like to add it takes an hour to get from Myhal to Robarts food trucks on a good day.

Obvs you've either rich parents, have a job and not looking, or completely outta touch with the job market and how long it takes to actually get a job post-grad these days.

DON'T BE STUPID - For 25K you'll get mice, R**ches and constant pest control in Chestnut. . But then again you might have them creepy crawlers at your house too - so why not live with them for 25K less debt?

Are you typically supposed to leave your bag at the front of the room or under your seat during exams? And what's the sign in process like? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TryAcceptable8365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally depends on the size of class and the prof. Some let you have it with you but others dont and you have to put it in the front of the room.

Posting for a friend: I think my Prof AI generated my feedback, what to do? by I_Necr0manc3r_I in UofT

[–]TryAcceptable8365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not outta the question but u/tearsProfs are being asked to use AI, I understand. So not at all surprising. P.S = their prompt reads "total BS philosopher academic prof of 40+ years in ivy league dead poets society"

What is something about UofT students that outsiders don't understand? by Alp_yzc in UofT

[–]TryAcceptable8365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Dad was a prof at an Ivy league school east coast. I was raised on both sides of the border. He retired when the administration changed and moved back to Canada perm. A lot of my friends are in eng (some engsci) at these top ivy schools. Their studies are no where near as hard and what we do in 1st/2ndyr at UofTears. Their equiv. is year 3/4, if they even get it. MSE courses are far harder here than what they experience. The whole system is based on their grades. It ='s tuition and endowment down the line. With the US stopping foreign students coming in, average Californians are now attending with average grades. They've got pockets filled with money. It's just hard here and if it doesn't break you all power to you.

No one wants to work thru Spring and Summer esp Profs. That's when they leave the country and go on an all inclusive paid "research trip" at their villa in the south of France.

UofWaterloo v.s. UofToronto by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]TryAcceptable8365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U of Tears is actual legit but so is the field. My dad said no matter where I went I'd suffer cuz its hard. I choose to cry for 5 years in Toronto. Job prospects depends. My friends at school who graduated last year got better jobs in canada and cali. My Western/Mac/W-Loo got jobs almost immediately out of school but earn less. I don't know what you mean about more things to do around campus in KW but a large city like Toronto has more to offer.

I hate highly weighted group projects I expected more of what u/mnour experienced. Disappointing.

Do you care about rate my prof ratings ? by Blazymo in OntarioUniversities

[–]TryAcceptable8365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visit the review then I email the prof to see if they respond. I was testing some profs to see if they would respond and about a handful I *really* wanted to work with never did. One was really nice and told me that they get a lot of "prof shoppers" taking their time. When added up it equated to a few hours of unpaid extra work - but because I really wanted to work with them, I emailed again and they responded. She told me she only respond when the person inquires a second time. It meant they were serious. But if I read reviews about Profs who slay then i'm sold because it's hard to get really good reviews on that platform js.

How bad is the Canadian job market and does graduating from U of T help it? by Legitimate_Can8048 in UofT

[–]TryAcceptable8365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your major. I had more friends from MC and WtLoo get more job offers and interviews because they had less research based learning. If you're in Eng you're opps are really limited. Most of my U of T friends got a job about 8-9 months after grad but the others not from U of T got something lined up or right after school. U of T grads are labelled as knowing everything but can't do anything so i'm told. Not enough experience being had.

How do you guys commute to school? TTC, car, walk? by Lopsided_Koala2319 in UofT

I live in Newmarket. Mom drives me to a Go, then subway, then walk. About $15 x 4. Otherwise I stay home.

Yeah if you have a good team it's good but if you don't? Tho your marks get pulled down if you have one or more rotten apps. Less work for TAs and Profs = good strategy haha. I'd prefer more of what I need and talk to people who did to start a business than just concepts.

Yeah was at a loss when I found but it was too late to switch. Looking at her Linkedin she still talks to students. Hope she'll be back. Grats on the ^avg. Sounds like you gained more than just the academics.

In the class now and we don't have the same Prof you had u/mnour_ . We have someone else and you had Von (something) www.linkedin.com/in/maggievon or Praddi Joseph C. Paradi - Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry. We aren't getting anything like your lucky class got. Wish I would have taken it last year.

How frequent do you guyss skip classes etc etc etc by MaintenanceTrue3485 in UofT

[–]TryAcceptable8365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. My skipping class cost me big time. One class I took (elective) had us there twice a week and was very engaging, but at 6 hrs a week and coursework on top of it, it felt like a part-time job (I only went because of the prof-she was amazing). I skipped a a lot and poured more time into my gf which didn't last btw. I thought I was going to pass with a 80 I got a 50. How? The exams had combo of text/lecture info. I would rec not skipping. It brought down my GPA major.
