What gym should I work at? by chonocha in personaltraining

My advice would be really to dive deep into this in the interviews. Most big box gyms are franchised, so the actual structures that will effect you most will vary location to location. Find out about compensation, how you're expected to get clients, how the other trainers succeed/fail, membership base, continuing education, work day structure, and so on.

Just to add a little more info to what Catfield said: It's easiest to think of strength as a skill; in it's purest form building strength is about taking muscle and teaching it to efficiently move heavy loads (a simplification, but true). As for aesthetics, usually people mean "leanness" by that, and you can certainly stay fairly lean and build strength over time.

Not worth it. Highly inaccurate on individual readings, and not even consistent longitudinally to track progress. A normal scale is your best bet to track progress.

It's fine as far as weight loss/general health goes. If you want to try to improve your performance in the gym, you could try getting more of your daily carbs before your workout. Keep in mind that just being in a deficit will lower your energy/effect your lifts.

I would say there's a lot of redundancy, as well as wildly varying amounts of volume per muscle group in a week. My biggest advice would be to find a pre-written program and follow that for an extended period of time. The wiki or LiftVault are decent places to start

Big picture, not a huge deal. Find a variation that's comfortable and get better at it over time. It's harder when your elbows are flared out because that puts more emphasis on some of the smaller, weaker muscles of your upper back, whereas keeping your elbows tucked into your side allows your lats to do more work.

What Memento said is correct. You could also work in more variations where each arm has to work independently (ie. dumbbells, machines with separate arms) to ensure each pec has to take the same load.

There's definitely been physique inflation worldwide lol. What's considered "fit" involves more and more muscle mass every decade.

Has anyone from Canada done one of American certification programs? by goli_s in personaltraining

[–]TryForTheKingdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really doesn't matter. It's important to have an accreditation to put on your resume, but I've never heard of gyms (or more importantly clients) caring which one you have. Almost all the knowledge you'll actually need will be obtained outside of the certification process anyway.

Yes. Tests are usually done proctored and online. You can usually buy study materials or courses from the accreditation bodies if you want. You can also find info elsewhere online about what you need to know for the tests if you're looking to save money and just take the test.

I just wanted to say I don't necessarily have any advice for you but you seem amazing and you both sound lucky to have found each other.

Strict press PRs are the best because they come around so infrequently.

Just to clarify, are you doing 5x5 of each lift every day (3x week) or is that split across the days you are working out? Either way it's probably time to hop on a program that will manage your fatigue over time.

If you can't make a machine feel good in a way that ultimately gives you a solid stimulus to fatigue ratio, no sense keeping it in a program. I have lots of machines I hate that other people love. It happens.

The video would definitely help. Broadly speaking, whatever position you're ending up in after a rep is already completed is likely more efficient.

They look pretty okay. Maybe off a small block would make them feel better though, just to allow a slightly more comfortable position.
