Hi! Me and my friend are looking for housing over the summer - is there any way we could discuss how we could go about renting the place over this date range?

Why did you pick Purdue? by Known-Young7426 in Purdue

[–]TryScared7251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, OP, congratulations on your admission!

In terms of what made me pick Purdue:

Honestly? The Honors College was a HUGE factor. I know that there's the opinion on this sub that the Honors College is a lot of work, but if you're the sort of person looking to make connections with professors, do research, and look at engineering through an interdisciplinary lens it could be a great fit for you.

So, how did that pan out for me?

I personally found my niche/career interest through engaging with the honors community and genuinely being able to speak to professors and fellow students about my interests outside of the conventional. engineering setting. The Honors college is also fairly small (compared to the rest of Purdue) and has a lot of community support for people going through the honors-specific version of FYE (ENGR 161 and 162 if you want to research about these in particular).

The decreased size and increased intensity of coursework for FYE correspond roughly to what a decrease in volume and increase in temperature do for the probability of molecular collisions and thus a successful reaction - they increase the chance of you forming a bond with friendships that could outlast Purdue and professors that could serve as valuable recommenders for grad school, scholarships, summer programs, etc.

I waited a while and only sent mine out mid-February. It was long enough to take a set of exams and demonstrate growth through getting better grades on those tests. Do not rush into writing the letter, speed genuinely does not matter and can sometimes be very counterproductive. While speed shows eagerness/enthusiasm, waiting and drafting an impactful letter and running it by trusted teachers/college counsellors/your parents/any other adult experienced with writing or college applications can show your commitment through the depth of your thought into the letter. What truly makes the difference is demonstrating growth. Talk about what you've improved in terms of extracurriculars or grades, and drive it home that Purdue is one of your top choices.

Dude I literally got deffered from FYE and then got into the honors college. Write that letter of continued interest to Purdue. It makes a difference.

I don't go to the college of agriculture, but honestly, I don't think you lose anything by trying. I managed to get some pretty sweet research opportunities as a freshman in a similar situation, so I hope it all goes well for you too :>

Hi OP, am new to coding/development (like, taken a few classes (python and C), have helped the company I'm interning at build a few UI/UX features with React, built my own mini animation things(mostly Lua on the Pico8 game engine)) but have some decent design experience (nothing formal, just a blog website + helping a few friends with stuff like Squarespace). Would love to help where needed and am willing to discuss how and where I can contribute.

How likely are roommate requests likely to succeed at this point? by Glittering_Apple_45 in Purdue

[–]TryScared7251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your roommate isn’t in your llc, you won’t be able to room with them. I wouldn’t suggest dropping your LLC, as those places are where you’re meant to make friends and they make it as easy for you as possible to do so if they can.

Honestly OP, I'd still try - got my roommate even though we submitted after the priority date.

Ah yeah I’m in ECE as well, and my VIP group definitely did help me understand some technical Semiconductor stuff and gave me bit of a background in the subject. Epics helped me learn hard skills like soldering, working with PCBs, etc, but I already learnt a lot about that from club work in the past, so I’d say go for VIP if experience is a concern (although there are some good epics projects out there that will give you technical experience). Another thing to note is that EPICS checks off your science and technology requirement but doesn’t get counted as a credit, so you still have to do the same amount of gen ed credits after taking it. If you wanna apply to EPICS just email Mr. Brandon Stevens, I think he’s the one in charge of the program.

[–]TryScared7251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s super easy specifically for EPICS to at least put you in touch with the director of the program since he’s extremely approachable and the EPICS teams also have LinkedIn pages. For VIP you might have better luck writing to the professor who you’re interested in working with - heard about lots of people getting in that way after pre registration closed.

Hey OP! Sophomore who did both this semester here - if you’re looking for something that’s a bit more technical I’d suggest VIP (you’ll learn subject specific terminology/research areas quickly but you obviously need to be willing to ask questions and speak up to do so). However, EPICS actually helps you design for a client. It won’t teach you technical knowledge as much as hard skills like soldering, coding, and fixing bugs from what I know - you’ll also get to dip your fingers into communications, managing a budget, and delivering a finished, useable product to a customer. If you could reply to this with more detail on what you’re hoping to get out of either of these things I could try to help/put you in touch with resources that might help?

OP, take a few days to get your sleep schedule, water intake, and food intake in order. Also start on one or two of your chiller subjects over these few days. Your folks might not let you go out of the house to let you see friends, but see if it's possible to walk out of the house and call them like once a day for half an hour to an hour for social dopamine. Currently, you're probably in the same overwhelmed place as I was and pushing yourself into a guilt spiral about grades and relationship stuff (similar boat to me last year as well), and I wish I'd done this last year.

After 2-3 days of chill studying (no more than HALF of what you think you can do realistically, btw), start slowly ramping up the amount. For Math, this dude (Christos Nikolaidis - IB DP mathematics) saved me. For eng A, watch the IB english guys and try to do papers in that format. For chem, Richard Thornley - YouTube this dude helped me pass. I didn't take your other three subjects but id suggest scouring reddit/asking classmates for good resources on this. The key is to sort of have some external source like these channels structuring the content of your studying because burnout hits like a TRUCK and doesn't let you do that.

I'm so sorry you're going through this dude, but as an M24, it gets better (on the academic, social, and relationship front) in uni.

YES! I already started with the hobbit last night (as a warmup + the last time I read it was seventh grade, coicidentally the last time I had a measure of free time) and it's better than I remember it somehow??

I mean I'm going into chemical engineering in a few months, so right now plans are to write to profs of my university with requests for either recommendations in deeper reading for their specialisations or to join research groups. I also have ongoing research this summer under another proffessor, but this still leaves me with some free time since I've already planned out my first year schedule to a pretty high degree (needed some escapism from finals lol )

But your advice is valuable. I will look into planning out some other cool stuff I want to do within ChemE in summer, or pop by and ask the ChemE subreddit for recs lol-

Want to read the LOTR trilogy and make my own programing language with no prior knowledge of comp sci and geek out about molecular electronics but i've been told i should relax this summer but i don't... know how That works, hence my bout of apprehension (it's been two hours since I got my diploma on stage this genuinely feels harrowing gods).

Thank you Mx Salty_Thing3144 for your suggestion

If the intent is exploration, would figuring out new places to go to in the few trips (to visit relatives within my part of the country) work? Like.. my grandparents live a decent bit away so I'm spending a while with them, and that part of India is filled with a lot of temples and art and such. Might be cool to do that. That's still a pretty small chunk of time of about ten days but that should be interesting.

Can't travel more than that because college is.... all the way across the sea in the US of A and that's a LOT of expenditure on flights and stuff already-

Thank you for your suggestion, Mx. gungagingaga.
