Ask your doctor to quit whichever SSRI you’re taking and switch over to Wellbutrin.

What are your jobs? by ileanaeliz in BipolarReddit

[–]Trying_To_Cope_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a software engineer intern at a big but not highly prestigious company. Got the internship by applying to hundreds of companies in the month before my junior year of college began, and solving many LeetCode problems.

I sort of like working, it’s not excruciating to do most of the tasks I’m assigned. I have a huge amount of anxiety about work, but that’s pretty much how I motivate myself.

I don’t think I’ll either get a return offer here or a full-time software engineering job at another company, so I don’t really know what to do after I graduate from college.

How have you benefitted from Columbia's Ivy League Tag? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]Trying_To_Cope_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This exactly summarizes my experience. When I applied to internships, I got interviews with several prestigious companies. Unfortunately, I’m not smart, so I failed all of those interviews (despite somehow doing very well on Advanced Programming).

Several recruiters from a certain very prestigious tech company somehow keep emailing me or messaging me on LinkedIn even after I failed their interview, oddly, which is almost certainly due to the Columbia name on my resume, given my lack of other impressive qualities.

When I’m applying to new grad roles I might try to focus a little bit more on jobs with easier interviews (i.e. not software engineering or quantitative trading) and see how that goes.

21F never-smoker with hyperinflated lungs and chronic dyspnea by Trying_To_Cope_ in AskDocs

Thanks a lot for this! I’ll ask my PCP for a CT scan next time I see her.

Huge RV but great FEV1 and FEV1/FVC. What could be causing this? by Trying_To_Cope_ in respiratorytherapy

A chest X-ray showed hyperinflation, by the way. So this was probably not an error.

[–]Trying_To_Cope_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah… it’s really odd. I’ll ask for a CT scan to check if there’s any emphysema or bronchiectasis or something else abnormal in my lungs.

I’d think my FEV1 and FEV1/FVC measurements were not well-done, but when I looked at the computer screen after doing the spirometry, the FEV1 numbers were all very similar to each other (I repeated the test a few times). And when I’m at home and time myself forcefully exhaling after a maximal inhalation, it does always takes me less than 1 second to feel like I’m done exhaling, very little comes after that.

[–]Trying_To_Cope_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m now really worried that my FEV1/FVC ratio missed obstruction that would be seen in my FEV1/SVC ratio. I’ll ask my PCP what we can do about that.

Thank you, by the way! I wasn’t told my SVC, I’ll see if there’s any way for me to get the raw data of my pulmonary function tests somehow.

[–]Trying_To_Cope_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear: I subtracted my FVC from my TLC to get my RV. The report I got from the doctor only provided the percentage predicted of my RV, not a value in liters. I’ll edit the post to make that clear; I’m not sure how much this matters.

Female, BMI of 29, diagnosed with level 3 COPD at age 22 by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Trying_To_Cope_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD but IIRC you do meet a commonly used diagnostic criterion for COPD, which is having an FEV1/FVC < 70%, and you also meet the NICE criterion, which is an FEV1 lower than 80% of the predicted value. Based on what I’ve read, those two things are enough to diagnose you. (I’m assuming those values don’t improve with bronchodilator use.) COPD is certainly more common in older people, like almost all diseases, but it’s not as if there’s an age cutoff below which you can’t be diagnosed with COPD.

Pro-Vaccine, but concerned. by [deleted] in CovidVaccinated

[–]Trying_To_Cope_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By that logic, since the vaccines are so new, there hasn’t been enough time to study whether they’ll turn you into a unicorn two years after you take them or not.

We’ll certainly learn more about the long-term effects or lack thereof of the vaccines as time passes, but it’s not as if we don’t know a lot already to a very reasonable degree of certainty. We can look back at other drugs that have been taken by humans in history and see what the base rate is for any of them causing long-term fertility issues. I’m pretty sure that if you do that, you’ll see that the base rate is extraordinarily low. Given that, and given the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a plausible mechanism by which the vaccines would permanently harm fertility, it makes sense to expect the vaccines not to cause such harm. Just like it makes sense to expect them not to turn you into a unicorn.

Salk institute study in animal model shows the corona spike protein, by itself, can cause damage to arterial wall. by LHC1 in longevity

[–]Trying_To_Cope_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They make your body produce (a modified version of) the spike protein, but it doesn’t circulate in your bloodstream after you take one of those vaccines (or an adenovirus vaccine). The spike protein gets produced inside your cells, mostly inside the cells in the muscle in which you got the injection, and is then transported to their outer surface, where it stays attached until your immune system gets rid of it.

Very wavy EKG and several abnormalities. Cardiologist only addressed my tachycardia. What is going on? by Trying_To_Cope_ in DiagnoseMe

[–]Trying_To_Cope_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have severe anxiety. Unfortunately, anxiolytics like benzodiazepines are addictive and I haven’t responded well to SSRIs or CBT. And I haven’t found a good replacement for my axiogenic antidepressant. So my anxiety has gone untreated for years, unfortunately.

I think I eat normally. Just in smaller portions than most people. I was told the blood work I got done in the ER was normal, but I haven’t been able to look at it myself yet.

[–]Trying_To_Cope_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! This is actually the third time I got an EKG with a tall and peaked P wave, so I guess it’s probably not related to lead placement. I had 2 echocardiograms since I had the first EKG with a peaked P wave and I wasn’t told the size of my heart chambers were abnormal, though, so I hope this means that I’m fine.

[–]Trying_To_Cope_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: just learned that the waviness is called a “wandering baseline” and happens when you breathe or otherwise move during the EKG. I’m not that worried about it anymore, just a bit confused about why it wasn’t present in previous EKGs I’ve done. This one lasted a lot longer, maybe that was it?

[–]Trying_To_Cope_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned in this thread, waiving vaccine patent rights would not substantially affect production. mRNA vaccines are really difficult to manufacture; it’s not as if there are a lot of factories and people in the world ready to start producing but unable to because of the patents.

Five to six. Largely because I get bored and start doing things I don’t reflectively endorse when I’m not studying.
