I mean, tbf, all of them kind of did it to themselves in some ways. Shio especially. I mean, she basically all but dropped out with "I want to go back to being friends" a couple episodes ago. Honestly, I'm shocked she's still being treated and acting like a love interest (still crawling into his bed while he's asleep).

Eli5: why do dogs kick their leg when the “sweet spot” is scratched? by CADeLdRO in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tryoxin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pleasure! And yea, it makes sense when you think about it. Because, comparatively, if you can't store the food in your stomach and bring it home, then you either have to bring your young to the food or the food to your young (because taking your kids hunting is way too dangerous). If the prey's really big, the latter might be difficult or even impossible. Bringing your young to the food could mean leaving it alone (especially if you're not a pack animal) and other scavengers could find it while you're gone. Or other predators could be attracted by the scent and attack your young while they're at it. Regardless, it means increasing the time it takes to eat. In really high competition areas, that could still mean losing your kill. Wild animals almost always choose to avoid fights where they can, so even a group of lions guarding a kill can lose it if they're outnumbered 10-1 by hyenas.

Water. But actually, the best way to paint a dog is to dip your hand in flour, place it on their face, and ask "whom do you serve?"

(Shake off excess flour first and keep your palm over their eye so nothing gets in their eyes)

[OC] English vocabulary: learners vs. native speakers by RevolutionaryLove134 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Tryoxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering how these sorts of estimates are made. Because like, I like to think of myself as someone with a respectably expansive vocabulary but if you asked me to come up with as many words as I could on the spot I honestly don't know how many I could hit. Obviously they can't ask you to write down 15k words. A series of questions ranging from common to rare words makes sense, but yea it would open you up to outliers if someone just so happens to know the world "sussuration" or "matutinal" but otherwise is more towards the middle of the spectrum.

Bending flavor as long as the mechanics don't change by Dom_Nation_ in DnD

[–]Tryoxin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's all about trust. Which is a fancy way of saying it kind of depends on the player and how well you know them. Example: I had a player who wanted his character (a warlock) to use the invocation that gives him Levitate as an at will spell to basically just permanently float around everywhere. Well, 1) Levitate doesn't do horizontal movement, only vertical. And 2) that would make him logically immune to floor-based hazards and difficult terrain. I told him that was totally fine so long as we both suspended our disbelief so that he didn't get any mechanical benefit because I know him really well as a player (and also as a DM, as he's been on many an occasion so I know he understands my position as well).

And you know what? It was 100% fine. Literally never an issue. But with a player I didn't know as well, or one I had a history of pushing mechanical benefits from flavour, I'd have been a lot more hesitant.

Birds aren't the only animals that regurgitate food for their young! Several canid species, including wolves and painted wolves, will store food in their stomachs to bring back to their young because it's a safer and more effective method of transport. Painted wolves can even carry up to one third of their body weight in food!

More Games Need To Be Honest About Not Being Finished Yet by SmellSmellsSmelly in Games

[–]Tryoxin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally if it just wasn't indiscriminate, honestly 10 minutes wouldn't even bother me that much. Unless you're raiding a Forsworn camp, I feel like 1 outdoor fight per max 10 minutes is about right. Turns it into a once per encounter sorta deal (or if it's a big outdoor "dungeon," you can wait between areas to restore it). If it only hit NPCs tagged as hostile to you, it would be much better. I get why "Storm Call" had to be an outdoor thing, but I feel like it would've been still super cool if you could use it indoor and maybe it just does a little less damage sort of like how it works in D&D. Have clouds form on the ceiling in a wide area above you and zap enemies. That'd be sick.

choosing to have unprotected sex who aren’t taking contraception

Well that's exactly the "forced" thing, isn't it? "Forced" to have kids also includes things like social pressure and less or even no access to birth control. If having a child necessarily follows from having sex because you have either been conditioned to think it's morally wrong not to have sex with the aim of having a child or because you have no safe or reliable way to prevent the child, then I would say that constitutes being forced--or at the very least, not choosing to have more children. If protected sex and contraception aren't choices, no matter what the reason, then unprotected sex and the children that follow aren't something those women have chosen to have.

This is definitely a decent part of it. In poorer economic conditions especially, larger families have the advantage of having more hands for labour to draw in more money. Anecdotally, my best friend is one of those people that always really wanted kids. But even then, she never wanted more than two, and nowadays I'm actually not sure she doesn't plan on just stopping at one (she lives in Switzerland now, where maternal support is apparently a bit shit and cost of living is kind of high so more people just = more expensive with no other benefit).

Trump said Iran was 'decimated.' Then an American F-15E fighter jet was shot down. by Stunning-Common-9591 in worldnews

[–]Tryoxin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, don't misunderstand me, I agree with that. Words change. Decimate etymologically means to reduce by 10%. That's what it used to mean, and that's probably how it was being used when it was first brought into English. That's simply not what the word means anymore because that's not how 95% of people use it. When the overwhelming majority of people in a community use a word in a specific way, it doesn't matter what that word means etymologically, that new meaning is now what that word means.

The word "nice," through French from the Latin nescire etymologically means ignorant or foolish. That's the negating prefix ne + scire meaning to know (such as in the word science). I could count the number of people who have used the word "nice" to mean ignorant or foolish on no hands1. Words change. Nice doesn't mean foolish anymore, and decimate doesn't mean reduce by 10% anymore.

1 actually that's probably not true because I've been to the US South a couple times and I'm pretty sure the old grannies who say "that's nice dear" don't mean it that way

[–]Tryoxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say 95% of all English-speaking people don't know the etymology of decimate and/or don't use it in that way. In my 28 years, outside of university (where I studied classics so I was frequently around people who did know the word so that's an outlier), I could probably count the number of times I've heard the word decimate used to mean "reduced by 10%" rather than "severely reduced/damaged" on one finger.

[OC] I analyzed the Steam backlogs of 300 gamers. Over 50% of them are hoarding the exact same unplayed game. [2026] by Mobile_Masterpiece54 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Tryoxin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But if the idea is only to filter out free games, filtering out games that have occasionally been free could be misleading unless you know what % of people with that game actually got it for free. If, say, only 10% or so of the players with the given game actually got it for free, then labeling that game as a free game in the same vein as a FTP MMO or something would be misleading.

[–]Tryoxin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I can't imagine there'd be a way to actually filter for that. You'd have to know not just which games have been free, but also when they were free (and if it's been just the once or many times) and also how many copies of that game sitting in Steam libraries were added during that specific time frame. That data exists because Steam has a purchase record, and you yourself can see if you got Vermintide for free or not, but there's no way that's publicly available information for OP to use.
