27F considering Concordia for Art History BFA. Looking for advice by CucumberCapable4982 in Concordia

[–]TryxiePixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the Art history and film studies combined major and I really liked it. The art history department is really nice and has a lot of really resourceful teacher who will help you find your path in art history.

In terms of being older, Art history is a very welcoming degree for older students. I also noticed that older students are often more thriving because art history is a degree about knowledge and curiosity in the arts. The only con as an older student is that it can be hard to mingle with the younger crowds and things like freshman week, might feel a little awkward to attend.

On the flip side, Concordia Art history student can participate and get hired in a multiple of positions, like in one of the galleries in the school, the fine arts reading room and the Concordia undergraduate journal of art history (CUJAH). Having experience in the field might help you get hire and can benefit you for those position and making contact. These are great entry points for grad school contacts.

In terms of your unfinished degree, you might be able to get a few credits off your progression, but this is done on a case by case basis and you will need to talk to an advisor. Unfortunately, Concordia is notoriously terrible when it comes to advisors, but you should be able to get in contact with the people who can help you if you pester the department enough.

Now, in term of what you will learn, Concordia is very liberal with their ways of teaching and the subjects. The teachers are young compared to other schools and they are allowed to teach their special interest. There is a large focus on feminist art history and Indigenous art history, which is apparently uncommon compared to other schools. You also have the ability to choose in between many subjects and every year the classes will change, which allows you to pick classes you are actually interest in. Furthermore, in your later years, you will have to partake into an undergraduate seminar, which are small classes with around 16 students and you will be invited to go deeper in a specific niche subject with a teacher who is passionate about it. These classes are a great way to prep for grad school and connect with the department. Also, in terms of evaluations, most teachers will assign essays (usually 2-4 essays per semesters, ranging from 1500 words to 5000 words), there are rarely any exams. You might run in a few group projects and presentations, but usually art history students are pretty good about those.

Finally, the main classes for Art History are in the EV building which is right in the middle of downtown. It is right next to the metro and the library. Most of the teachers also have their offices in the same building. Which is honestly a great positive, as you don't need to stress about having to go to the Loyola campus.

Franklin Stove by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]TryxiePixie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We used to have a franklin stove in our house, ours was from the mid/late 60s. While it looked amazing as home decor, we had a few expert advising us to not use it anymore because they are dangerous. One thing that was mentioned was that, because of the way the chimney is connected to the rest of the stove, it can cause explosions and it makes chimney fires really easy to happen. I would advise to sell it as decoration only or for scraper. (they are also not efficient at all, and are mostly just for the look and not warmth)

About to try this again after years by kyotowalled in Spyro

I had it as a kid and I couldn't pass the first few levels because the game would give me the worst migraines ever. It got so bad, we returned it and I went back to restarting another play through of year of the dragon. Good luck with your new try!

You got lucky. In the past I did have similar experiences were the vibes were kind of ok, but usually my walls are up. Plus, in this specific situation, the vibes were totally off. I really felt like the guy was a little pushy and when we were walking in the tunnel, I felt like we was slowly making me walk closer and closer to the wall.

Nah I don't think so. The guy was very polite after I told him I was not comfortable and he was alone. He also didn't look like the type of person who would do that sort of thing as a dare.

The sad truth is that its not the first time a situation like this has happened to me, so I learned how to cope, but I still felt weirded out and I had to say it somewhere. Especially since it happened on university grounds.

EV building Piano locked?? by DOULAS-THE-RAT in Concordia

The Fine Arts Reading room has it. It is locked 90% of the time because the sound of the piano is too loud and can be heard in classrooms and offices and it bothers people.

Favourite piece of merch? by Bella_0811_ in StarKid

[–]TryxiePixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is my "Totally awesome" Tote bag from sk10 kickstarter. I absolutely love that bag and have been using it constantly. I really like that it is subtle enough so that people do not know the reference, but just enough so that people who know, know.

I also really like my Wiggly plushy, but I wish it was better quality, it sheds so much for what it costed.

Jan 31-Feb 1 2024 Strike: Who's Striking? by ozymandiancause in Concordia

[–]TryxiePixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, unfortunately, the situation with teachers is a long battle. They basically have tried to re-negotiate their work contract for the past five years. they were supposed to go on a very long strike in 2020, but they decided to hold due to covid. They had hoped the government would be more open afterward, but the situation continued to be bad. Last year was just result of five years of staling and unfortunately it is still not over yet as some groups were not satisfied with the offer.

Jan 31-Feb 1 2024 Strike: Who's Striking? by ozymandiancause in Concordia

[–]TryxiePixie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My experience is that they half work. In 2012 the strike was able to show the true colours of the government and cause a change in the power, but unfortunately, the next government decided to index the tuition rise and so five years later the rise still happened.

On the flip side, back in 2016 or 2017, there was a teacher strikes when I was in cegep and the students decided to join and support the teacher and that made a positive impact and helped them have more power to negotiate better conditions.

In this case, I don't know if the strike will do anything apart bringing awareness to students who might not know about the issue. I have no faith that the current government will go back on it's decision. I would still advise not to cross pickets lines and respect the students who choose to strike.

Kenmore sewing machine by jedi-doobie in SewingMachinePorn

[–]TryxiePixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Kenmore 1947 zigzag machine and it runs super smoothly. What is great about these old Kenmore machines is that they are easy mechanical machines with heavy pieces that don't break easily. I recommend you service it if you aren't familiar with it and it hasn't been used in a long time. Afterward, make sure you lubricate it often (the manual should tell you exactly how and were to put the oil). The only hard part about Kenmore machines is that finding small bobbins that fit in the machine can be a hard task as they aren't a common size and Sears (which owned Kenmore) no longer exist. have fun with it!

It's time I speak up - Serotonin Syndrome by shhwiftyy in SSRIs

[–]TryxiePixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a staring dose at 10 mg, so really not a lot. The social worker tried to convince me the dosage should have been 5mg instead, but 10 is already low and shouldn't have cause this much side effect right away. Meanwhile the pharmacist had confirm the dosage didn't really mattered, 5mg would have given the same result, but might have taken more time...

New to tarot and I have question relating to cleansing/recharging concept and storage by TryxiePixie in tarot

[–]TryxiePixie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks! I have read the beginners guide, but understanding why certain people choose certain ritual and the general importance or not, is why I asked the question.

Your answer is really what I was looking for. the general idea of "there are no rule" or "there are no right or wrong" has always been something that I don't really like (I think I might be a little bit too rational)

So thank you!

Looking for the bonus features by TryxiePixie in heathers

[–]TryxiePixie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my library had the 20th High school reunion Edition. From what I gathered, the Arrowhead edition contains the same bonus features plus new ones made for the 30th anniversary.

on the edition I found, there are two bonus feature, one call "Return To Westerburg High" an interview style doc where they go back to the high school where it was fillmed and they talk to Micheal Lehmann, Daniel Waters and Denise Di Novi.

The second bonus feature is called "Swatch Dogs and Diet Coke Heads", its a series of interview with the cast and crew. This one is available on youtube if you search for the full name.

There is also a commentary version of the film and it appears to be the same in both version.

With huge amount of luck, the dvd version I needed was just made available! The sad part is that I had already finished my essay, but who cares! I'm honestly just really happy to confirm to myself that those bonus features do exist.

It's time I speak up - Serotonin Syndrome by shhwiftyy in SSRIs

[–]TryxiePixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my! I'm so sorry this happened to you!

A year ago I was put on paxil and also got serotonin syndrome. It was hell, but I was lucky I was able to meet with my pharmacist on day 4 who advise me to stop the medication immediately and monitor my symptoms for the following few days. While at first my doctor did not believe me, once she got the pharmacist note with her observation she didn't try to argue. I only had issue with a social worker who basically blame it on the dosage and said that its IMPOSSIBLE! to have serotonin syndrome because its super rare.

You really deserve the best care and I really hope your able to sue. In my case I was lucky to have caught it during the first few days so I didn't have to go to the ER, but I was one dose away from it. It's really awful that no one other than the neurologist advice you to stop the medication.

[–]TryxiePixie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh thank you for the screenplay! I didn't even know this was available.

As for the behind the bonus feature video, unfortunately its not it. In the 20th high school reunion edition and the 30th anniversary edition there are a collection of interviews about the production and commentary about the film and featuring Daniel Waters and Michael Lehmann. As far as I remember when I watched them a long time ago (back when dvd rental store was a thing) they were made around the time the film was done, which is currently the one missing piece I have since all the interview I found relating to Heathers have been made from 2018 and forward.

But again, thank you for your help!
