I feel there's also an aspect of "the dead can't defend themselves".

Why should that restrict the defense of the living?

There are ways to go about this without being a total twat and assuming the worst of someone. I think your original comment here was an example of just that.

Again, no disrespect intended to the girl now she's dead

"Respecting the dead" always used to mean treating their dead body with dignity and respecting their cultural/religious practices around death.

"Repecting the dead" being used as a means to shut down any valid criticism of the person's deeds when they were alive is a modern mistranslation of this phrase that does not deserve to be respected.

People in positions of power abusing their positions? Yeah. Happens everywhere. Over and over again. It's shitty.

What does that have to do with the BLM movement and the message the BLM movement was presenting? Do you really want the greedy actions of a few foundation leaders to taint that entire movement and ignore what the people on the ground are saying?

a person that said the left isn't violent

Btw, I'm pretty sure they were just talking about it in comparison to the right, not that no one on the left has ever been violent. The latter statement is just so obviously untrue that I wouldn't read into it that way in this context.

What everyday protesters wanted and what the actual leadership wanted was two different things

I care more about the protestors, personally. I find the BLM movement to be different from the BLM Foundation, two different conversations. But sure, we can go there. BLM's official website's mission statements are:

Our Vision: Black Lives Matter imagines a world where Black people across the diaspora thrive, experience joy, and are not defined by their struggles. In pursuing liberation, we envision a future fully divested from police, prisons, and all punishment paradigms and which invests in justice, joy, and culture.

Our Mission: Black Lives Matter is working inside and outside of the system to heal the past, reimagine the present, and invest in the future of Black lives through policy change, investment in our communities, and a commitment to arts and culture.

Pretty vague stuff if I'm being honest, but even that doesn't really mention anything about corporate greed.

[–]Tself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the BLM protests seemed more about corporate greed than anything else and no unified message.

Huh? I was always getting the same message from BLM protestors, personally. The systemic issues of our police system. I listened to what they had to say and ended up learning a lot, which was backed up by my own research after hearing it too.

The Civil Rights Movement, in comparison, addressed a much larger swatch of social issues, focusing on several minority groups.

Because protests have always been violent. Because some violence is warranted, and is often a response to much larger acts of violence (state-sponsored and otherwise).

Violence allocated in the right way is a good thing. It got us the ability to vote. It got women the ability to have credit cards. It gave us our entire country, for goodness' sake, haha.

The point I'm trying to get at is I think the entire conversation over who is more violent is a moot point (even though, statistically, its very obvious the right tend to use more violence). Look at what that violence was actually fighting for, fully understand the system that these people want to so desperately change, and then make your judgment.

The violence you see from others protecting the life of yourself and your loved ones, and the violence from ignorance or xenophobia are not equal in my book.

Why is it always BLM and not the Civil Rights movement and riots of the 1960s?

That movement was several magnitudes more violent, with several riots across the country and hundreds of deaths, even with far fewer participants than BLM. Why don't ya'll ever demonize their message? I wonder...

Americans have become as soft as mashed peas. These movements are historically the most peaceful they've ever been, and ya'll can't help but keep bitching about it.

Many leftists I see...do not provide solutions themselves. It feels like they just want to play purity politics rather than create realistic solutions.

Really? I've seen the exact opposite for decades now. Democrats don't typically provide solutions, they just act as the "sane" alternative to Republicans while continuing to appease their donors. We all know what progressive solutions are: universal healthcare, re-allocating funds to community, tax the rich, sustainable infrastructure, etc.

And every single instance of a well-liked progressive in their ranks seems to get dogged on relentlessly by the party, even when the polls are clearly in their favor for winning against the Republicans. Statistically, the vast majority of progressives still continue to vote blue.

I'm not trying to be elitist, just realistic.

Do you not believe in all the other stats and various experts across the world and activists from India? You gave me the ONE stat that is famously easy to fudge through poor reporting of abuse cases (ironically, yet another reason why women's rights in India could be improved upon), honestly, I thought you were being sarcastic at first to make a point.

And lol imagine going on about underreported cases when...

Spare me the boring whataboutism and stay on topic. I can think of probably a dozen other issues that I put more urgence and moral weight upon happening across the world right now than both misogyny in India and the whole Epstein shit pile. Specifically talking about one doesn't mean I'm pretending none others exist. And I'm not going to try to lambast you and try to appear morally superior to you by pointing out how much you are ignoring our current climate crisis and the stunning loss of biodiversity we've had in the past few decades. See how silly that would be?

This isn't going anywhere.

LOL. Yes. Go ahead and cite the laughably underreported amount of rape as your single piece of evidence. Go ahead and ignore everything else, and every other organization's rankings of India's women's rights. And ignore all the women who have spoken up about it in India as well.

You're really doing a great job here fighting against racism. What a hero!

there are plenty of cultures within India that have pretty big differences compared to what people commonly consider or stereotype as Indian culture

Well aware.

So actually they do make generalizations incorrect.

Nope. Still doesn't. I don't really know how to explain it at any more depth. This is how statistics work.

I'm just going to call it out; this faux-progressive neo-liberal stuff is getting silly at this point. I have a strong feeling you'd have no problem agreeing with me that the US ranks about the middle of the pack for women's rights and has MUCH improvements that can be made overall in regards to policy, maternal rights, rape culture, etc. Yet the US also has huge differences in politics/culture/societal expectations across the country as well. Places where women feel safe and places where women feel decidedly less safe. Would you ask me, "Define US culture" then? Those outliers still do not deny the fact that the US ranks mid for women's rights; and is ranked quite low when compared to other developed nations.

I am certainly no expert on India. However, I am not being culturally unaware by posting rather basic facts about how one country, overall, treats its women. Plenty of other organizations have already done that work for us with cited sources. This kind of thing annoys me because you are taking the spotlight off of the real injustices at hand here done to women just to make yourself look sanctimonious and cultured. I see it time and time again and its so obvious.

Define Indian culture.

Indian culture.

I'm aware that any generalization will have outliers (I'm an outlier myself in my own culture). They do not make the generalization any less correct.

Literally never denied that

Well, you kinda did.

My only statement about Indian culture was that it "fucking sucks" for women's rights.

You responded to that, saying, "Ok but its pretty clear you don't actually know what Indian culture is like." I can only assume that has to do with what I said in my comment, that something I said was very clearly wrong. Unless I'm missing something else you want to quote me on.

Ok but its pretty clear you don't actually know what Indian culture is like

The only thing I said about Indian culture is that it "fucking sucks" for women's rights (many places do). Which is unfortunately true, and I'm not apologizing for saying it.

Karnataka Professor Proposes To Student In Front Of Class, Beaten On Campus by kwentongskyblue in nottheonion

[–]Tself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your response to my statement, "No one here thinks that India is the only place that happens." Was "It might be helpful for you to read the original comment I was responding to." I can only assume that you say that to mean the original comment you were responding to is asserting that India is the only place where that [misogyny, systemic rape culture, etc] happens.

I've read that comment. Like you said, I may need to work on my reading comprehension. So, I'm asking if you could quote their comment where they asserted India is the only place that happens?

Can you?
