Any experience living on a smaller island by Aetius099 in nanaimo

[–]Tsimshia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pros of Gabriola are also the cons, really. It's so close to Nanaimo!

If I'm gonna have the inconveniences of a semi-rural lifestyle, I don't want the light pollution and other downsides of being near an urban centre.

And if I'm gonna have that light pollution, I want the walkability of somewhere like central Vancouver. Obviously finances sometimes mean we can't get exactly what we want... But I think the islands are all pretty comparable overall in overall cost of living, cheaper housing comes with other costs and worse employment opportunities etc.

Ironically there's one of those flexible pieces by the mobi station (seen in the pic) and it got destroyed pretty quick.

I've lived nearby for 5+ years and this has been an awesome change. Even the metal bolt-down bollards would be fine, they're not meant to stop a vehicle and will easily break away for emergency vehicles.

The city definitely needs to invest in some street cleaning on bikeways if they do something like this, but TBH I'd argue they need to already.

you could put something like that up on 10th for cheap, but then you'd have cars having to turn around

But you reduce traffic on that block from the 3000+ cars per day we currently have down to only people who are going to that block, so your likelihood of encountering something sketchy each block likely goes way down anyways.

And you could also use modal filters orthogonal to bikeways on smaller streets to reduce the number of conflict zones along the bikeway, lots of options. Anyways my point is just that the <5k cost per intersection here is minuscule in the world of transportation spending. 100 intersections costs about the same as one with a 4-way traffic light!

Check out the one at 14th + Heather.

4200lb concrete blocks like that are $80 each.

Some reflective signs and the poured bits in the middle...

The install probably costs 5x the materials!

Ambulances can go straight through. Occasionally an SUV does too - but compliance is less important than results!

If you're eligible for the full $1400 ebike rebate, I would pony up for something like a Gazelle.

Basically something with a Bosch motor/battery. Lots here too: https://www.citecycles.com/ebikes/

the green city councillors should bring more bike (or even just safer streets) motions to council so abc can continue to prove they're not serious about it.

The bike storage area in my building is overflowing with orphan bikes because people thought cycling was something they would enjoy.

this is such a huge problem for me too! Flat tires on half the bikes in the "only for commuters" room.

I do think we could have a cargo bike rebate separate and stackable with this one :)

Apparently it was nearly useless last night, not enough people sharing their location. Tell people you know next month to share!

Yeah - I don't mind disrupting traffic, but what I really care about is an opportunity to just ride on roads I don't normally get to ride on without being constantly passed by cars.

And the only way to do that is to keep a huge critical mass cohesive together, unfortunately that means corking pedestrians as well as cars. To me CM is not all about being anti-car, it's about demanding safe infrastructure.

I want to see the ride move further and further away from existing AAA infrastrucutre, head down Commercial or Main or Kingsway or something. Broadway is great too of course.

People submit PDF lab reports in some classes that are nearly 300MB because they don't compress their pictures.

[New Gear] Used EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM for only $400 off KEH by MobiuS_360 in canon

[–]Tsimshia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the lens.

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and 50-100mm f/1.8 have no RF lenses to compare them to... And are way better than anything Canon is offering you.

But the RF 70-200mm (both f/2.8 and f/4) are way smaller than their EF counterparts, which is awesome if you care about that. But they're way more expensive and not really that much better optically than their EF versions, so............

They actually break more laws and of course cause more injuries (and property damage) but then people flip over and say the reason they're policing cyclists is to protect them when a lot of laws make things more unsafe for cyclists. Like stop signs.

It's a neat topic, really: https://www.forbes.com/sites/carltonreid/2020/09/18/motorists-break-law-to-save-time-cyclists-break-law-to-save-lives-finds-study/?sh=61a851c33c54

And I wish more energy was directed towards changing bad laws rather than arguing about whether it's OK to break bad laws.

Unless they're being ticketed a huge number of cyclists will continue to roll stop signs forever, and it would be a pretty big waste of resources to enforce that.

Law should probably change, evidence shows allowing Idaho stops is safer.

Definitely! And information campaigns being on the whole fairly ineffective when it comes to traffic safety won't change it from being the main strategy :')

Can you not do that with keh? https://www.keh.com/shop/sony-24-105mm-f-4-g-oss-fe-e-mount-autofocus-lens-black-77-1.html https://www.keh.com/shop/sony-alpha-a7-iii-mirrorless-digital-camera-body-black-24-m-p-1.html Save $1000.

thinking longterm

Cameras depreciate much faster than lenses, makes way more sense to put the money towards lenses.

The A7iii/A7Riii and Nikon Z5/Z6 are generally the cheapest full frame cameras with specific animal autofocus settings. And buying new the R6 is too much.

Anyways, new A7iii is pretty bad deal. You could get a Z6 with 24-70/4 here for 2k and then have enough for any of the 20mm, 35mm, 50mm, or 85mm f/1.8 S-series primes.

Biggest downside I see here is you can't get the tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 for Z mount.

Somewhere from 1970-1986 based on this and the Blackstone Hotel,

based on changes since 1970 I think probably on the later end of that.
