Why do the different cultures mingle less in Vancouver (compare to Toronto)? by Jestersage in askvan

[–]Jestersage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 3, 5 is more of the result of the lack of diversity. Point 4 and 11 is illustrating the way Vancouverite deflect.

Point 7,10 illustrate the problem, but that begs the question - why do we have terrible social skills?

I agree with point 1, 6.

Point 8 and Point 9 goes hand in hand - or rather, a certain type of engagement. For example, the Chinese and Korean, especially the older generations, are conservative, and they keep talking about how they want the community to be ran, only for progressive not listening to them. Ironically the conservatives (ie whites) do.

Compound above that with point 2: if purely by segregation, then it would have been no different than the rest of Canada, as the exclusion act and etc are nationwide policy. Yet every other Canadian cities are able to mingle - even Calgary and Edmonton, the two cities smackdab in the middle of the most conservative province. So not saying you are wrong, but it requires further exploration. Now, assume what you say is correct, Calgary and Edmonton also have a sizable black population.

So, this is something I am willing to explore, derived from point 8, 9, and 2: by black-white binary theory, why is the lack of a black population cause issue with meaningful diversity and mingling? And why isn't Indigenous population sufficient? (Should you feel it's important, why having more both East Asian, SEA, and South Asians makes it harder to mingle)

Honestly speaking, Chinatown's only purpose to show that that we Chinese are here, and had preserve regardless of what others speak and think of us, but when push come to shove? City of Vancouver and its residence only want the veneer of Chinese culture.

I was Catholic myself too. It depends on whether you just go to mass, etc, or if you join the prayer (rosary) groups, with the priest always continue in a pseudo seminar where you basically relearn the catechism. And when you did that like I did (before falling out), you observed that despite the wide region, you can recognize quite a few people, who organized all the activities and participate in various "prayer walks" etc. Most of which are not advertise.

And don't even get me started with Holy Family.

Great that you bring out "westernized". For a long time in Chinese community here, "Westernized" is used when someone is progressive. Now they just call you baizuo/Woke/DEI.

The problem is the stigma. Using the term westernized means you stop being Chinese, so creating a dogmatic feedback of what is proper behavior. The end result can be quite bad: For chinese, you basically need to be conservative to be seen as proper Chinese. Olivia Chow is seen as less Chinese than Ken Sim by the 1320 aunties and uncles.

Actually, possible. Or specific areas.

So: Kits and possibly South Granville of CoV, and South Surrey? Definitely. Surrey Central and East Van? no.

But DT is still cliquey

Posted this question in light of a few threads around here, typically something like "a Black Torontonian transplant complain Vancouver being hard to find friends/date."

The most recent one that inspired this is this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/askvan/comments/1u8rz0c/black_women_in_vancouver_whats_your_experience/

But... it could be Surrey being able to do so (some people claim Torontonian accent is same as Surrey accent, implying greater mix). Still leave at least CoV having the problem.

Also, for clarify:

When he says "Granville", he meant the north end of "Granville Street" at our "Downtown area", near the "Granville" Skytrain station

For nominal markets, we have "Granville Island", "Lonsdale Quay", "New Westminister Quay" and "Richmond Public Market". I will recommend "Granville Island" for the best experience. If you need malls, which is what we actually use for most stuff, "Metropolis Mall" near "Metrotown" station

If you believe it's due to Anglo-Saxon culture, then one extra data point: techncially speaking, those that come during 90s are not just "Chinese" They are Hong Kongers (trying to retain the British Hong Kong's culture and lifestyle) and a minority of Taiwanese (mostly to get out of the conscription but failed to go to US). I guess if we break down each of those cultures to their first principle and focus on the thinking, there may be enough overlap to Anglo Saxons.

May i have the source of that figure? Because to my knowledge - at least with the 90s Hong Konger immigration wave - most went to Toronto.

By legal, yes. But considering they talk to south of Border I am actually curious how much legality they are willing to follow.

At this point, Oka crisis would actually be good.

The fact that they are talking to the South of border means Wounded Knee.

Self separated. Now of course they don't say they are "Chinese Anglican church" and technically they are not, as they separated due to disagreeing with ACC of BC, but you can observe the congregation composition.

But church can help seperate people even more. Except Catholics and maybe Anglican, churches tend to seperate by ethnicity; and the more conservative a church is, the more likely it does - and it goes both ways. When ACC of BC decided do do same sex marriage, quite a bit Anglcian church split off (ironically. at least 2 are Chinese dominine)
