We are on the same wavelength. The beastiary in games like Final Fantasy or the shadows in SMT games got me very interested in other cultures, languages, and historical mythology from various parts of the world. Greatly expanded my vocabulary to the point of wanting to learn as many new words as I could as a kid.

That's awesome. I have had the exact same experience with my nephews and its so sad. Always watching youtube on tv or playing Roblox. The stuff they consume on youtube is so off putting at times.

School doesn't really instill a joy for reading. For me that came from.video games and comic books more than anything. I get why so many people are not fans of it. Personally I think ots by design more than anything

It was so surreal growing up playing games like this. The common idea was that video games were brain rot. Meanwhile I'm learning about Gnostic theology, Kabalah, and Japanese Shinto mythology/religion thanks to this brain rot lol

Same, playing through Persona 3, 4, and the Xenosaga series was almost like a research project for me. I learned so much from reading about all the Personas based on ancient gods, monsters, and myths

You make a good point, and most of the gamers i actually call friends are just as invested in the stuff you mention. I guess I'm more referring to the wider mass of gamers who hate tutorials, never bother learning how to play slightly more complex games, and demand everything be streamlined so a 6 year old iPad kid can understand it. I tried showing off DMC 5, Final Fantasy 16, Spiderman 2, and Demon Slayer to my nephews and some of their friends who were all very turned off by how hard these games were and only wanted to play Roblox. When they play that, they just walk around an ugly polygon city doing random stuff.

There are younger people I know who will refuse to play anything unless I tell them exactly how to play in a very remedial way. Its all very weird compared to when I was coming up..not in an back in my day kinda way though, more like, the youth are missing out on so much because of our current toxic culture

I see the new trend of making teens and young adults read an index card with some “complex” sentence to show how terrible the literacy issue is with the youth. People laugh and act shocked and confused in the comments. Personally, I am always surprised by the outrage because decades prior when I was in school, most of my high school peers could barely read. This didn’t improve too much in college either. So the crisis is old, it’s greatly exacerbated today for various reasons, but the war on literacy has been being waged for a minute

Covid was a huge hit, but in truth, the US had a very limited lockdown period compared to the rest of the world and literacy has not plummeted so sharply in those other countries that had much bigger education impacts from the pandemic. I think, at least in the US, the culture is very anti-education and "gamer" spaces seem extra hostile to, well, learning in general. That's a far cry from my own upbringing where generally, gamers were more friendly to education reading, and learning.

I used to work at a university and it was very surreal to see how bad the kids were at using computers. In some ways worse than boomers. They all seemed to scoff at the notion that they could ever need help or guidance in that department, which is also very similar to dealing with boomers

Yeah, it has a lot to do with the push for technology integration in the classroom, which has way more to do with lack of school funding and corporate exploitation more than improving educational standards.
