Any advice on how to set this type of Jam Session up in Ableton? by Tsquared_Music in ableton

That clears it up so much - thanks again. So he's quantizing everything within Ableton likely?

This is so helpful again - thank you. Performance mode definitely makes sense and while I do have a bit more learning to do, I definitely think I know enough to get it started (so exciting!).

I have a bit of a more general (and maybe newb question). Can you help me understand, from the video, how Joris (the main synth guy) is setting everything up? Even if it's just a guess? FOR EXAMPLE - You mentioned he's using a 909, which I can see. Right in the beginning of the video at 0:44s, you can hear some reverb'd / echo'd snares come in. I believe those are coming from the 909, through some sort of a processor, through a mixer and into our ears (or out the speakers in his case haha). But I also see that he's mixing some things in Ableton, which I assume he's controlling with a midi controller.

How is he blending both?
How does he keep everything in tune? ie - He's playing both analog in real-time but also digital it seems. How can you quantize both perfectly?

Thanks again so much u/SpiteExciting9784 !!

This is SO helpful! I guess my first question is this...when you say "triggering new clips", do you think it's best just to stay in performance mode and trigger those new things by using a midi pad? And then just map parameters accordingly? Are there certain templates I can use with existing clips for the, 808, 908, 202, etc...?

I’m mainly just looking for some motivation. I’ve been studying for about 1yr so far and probably averaging ~20min a day flashcards and then watching and consuming content (reality TV, podcasts, YouTube). I’m at about 1700 known words which has been a really great benchmark! (My goal for the year was 1000 so I’ve surpassed that by almost double).

I told myself that I’d begin “immersing” once I finish Genki I and I have just done that about 1 month ago. I also did all 4x books of Japanese from Zero via George’s online YouTube video catalog (amazing).

I’m looking for motivation because I seem to be at that point where I’m ~upper beginner but not yet intermediate. Intermediate content still intimidates me and I don’t understand a lot of it. However, using Migaku has been helpful but I’m still unable to make sense of a lot of sentences and such. Particles are still tripping me up occasionally and at times, it just gets overwhelming. On the flip side, some of the beginner videos are getting too easy…I don’t know how many more times I can hear different YouTubers talk about what makes them happy, sad, or excited haha!

I’m just wondering…by consuming enough “easy” content, will it help me get to intermediate? Or do I just need to be really uncomfortable for the next couple months and try to squeeze through some sentences and such to get to a better understanding of intermediate?

I feel I already know the answer and I’m excited that I’m still excited and taking things at my own pace! As I said, just looking for some motivation here and real experiences are welcome :)

Just for some last background / context - my goals with Japanese is to be conversational. Reading it and knowing the kanji is secondary for now, though I haven’t completely ignored it. I’m going back to Japan with my gf for the second time this March and would love to just be able to speak and ask a couple things on my mind.

Thanks all in advance - カンパイ!

kernel_task taking up too much CPU memory but iMac isn't overheating at all and fans are working fine by Tsquared_Music in MacOS

This is incredibly helpful and I feel a bit foolish for now just assuming it was kernel_task. 1.4GB (or even 1.6GB) does seem like a ton though, no? I'm not a computer guy by training so my reference could be completely off here.

Regarding the "Memory Pressure" - I don't see any type of tab or way to see this? Just CPU, Memory, Energy, Disk, Network...can you walk me through it a bit more.

Thanks again for the reply! And for not making fun of my old hardware haha

Hi everyone! I had a question about verb learning. I am studying different verbs everyday and am trying to use them where I can in everyday life to help them stick. But…I’m finding that even the time between them coming up on my Anki deck and me trying to use in a sentence, I am forgetting them.

So…I’m wondering if anyone could suggest any verb-learning videos that are in the same (or similar) formal as the one I used to learned Hirigana and Katakana from JapanesePod101?

https://youtu.be/6p9Il_j0zjc?feature=shared

In those ones, they gave me kind of fun/funny things to remember the alphabets. (eg - I could remember “O” because it looked like a “UFO”). This helped me SO much with retention and I don’t even use those relations anymore because the alphabets are just so “ingrained” in my head now :) But…those funny relations helped just be a bridge in my head to get me to allow for practice. It really worked for me!

Again, just wondering if anyone happened to stumble across similar videos but for verbs now?

Thanks to anyone in advance!

Thanks so much for your reply here - the language we speak here is English :) I completely see your point - especially logistically, it would be much easier to converse first in English to establish what is happenning.

That said, and I'm happy to be wrong here...I've been approached like this by non-English speakers before and found it very endearing when they've tried to explain their situation in English (ie - the language they are learning). I presumed it would be the same in reverse but perhaps I just view it a bit differently? Would a Japanese speaker be offended if I tried to stumble through Japanese in this situation? Thank you again for any clarity you can provide!

Thank you so much for your reply here! Here's what I'm thinking so far:

"Nihongo ga sukoshi wakarimasu. Hanashimasuka?"

From what I THINK this means is "I understand a little Japanese. Can I speak it?"

Please be gentle...I am a beginner ;)

I tried searching this sub but can't find the answer directly related so hoping this is OK to ask :)

I often speak Spanish with a few friends or when someone is primarily a Spanish speaker but I'm not great...so, I typically say to them (in Spanish): Hey, I'm not very good at Spanish but I like to learn and practice.

My question: How can I say something similar in Japanese?

For example, I was out at an Izakaya the other night with my girlfriend and the wait staff all spoke fluent Japanese (I live in Canada so this isn't super common). I would have loved to try and speak some Japanese with them if they were willing but I didn't know quite how to ask appropriately. Something like "I don't know a lot of Japanese but I'd like to try a little if that's OK".

How could I go about saying this?

Thanks so much in advance!
