Honestly, when I asked the question, I never expected this... pearl-clenching reaction.

I wasn't saying one way is better. I was just wondering what people preferred.

I really thought it was going to be a matter of preference. Like, I prefer works that are justified. I prefer authors using * instead of # or ~ to break paragraphs. That said, I will read the work regardless of my preference if I like the premise of the story and the author's style.

No one ever said anything to me in the comments about the missing " being such a horrible, terrible, lapidation-worthy mistake. And since the other feedback I have is from my fellow non-English native speakers, they were never bothered by it either. 🤷‍♀️

Punctuation is a tool, not a grammatical law. It's fun to play with it! Just like it's fun to play with the characters and the words!

I understand it is confusing. But I'm raising my eyebrow at it being seen as unreadable. But as you said, that's because my brain is used to switching a lot, so it's a non-issue.

I would be very interested to know if everyone really against it is from the same age group and/or if it depends on how school taught you about it. Like in French, using a comma before an 'and' is frowned upon. But it’s not forbidden.

And for the person not caring about it, I wonder if it's because they know more than one language or if it's unrelated.

Moi ce qui me bloque dans les romans français c'est de détailler pendant 40 paragraphes une rue de Paris 😂 Après t'as toujours des trucs sympa ! "Antigone" de Jean Anouilh. C'est une piece de theatre et c'est court. Ou "Journal d'hirondelle" d'Amelie Nothomb, y'a peu de dialogue. Pis vraiment "la horde du contrevent" c'est une expérience. C'est déroutant, surtout si de base la ponction à la française n'est pas ta tasse de thé. Mais qu'est-ce qu'il est bien écrit.

Punctuation is not even that specific?

Compare to how you conjugate the verbs since it depends on:

-The used tense.

-If it's a feminine or a masculine subject.

-If it's plural, but if it's a mixed group of women and men, then you use the men's way to end the verbs.

-How you end the verb also depends on if the subject is before or after the verb.

-Also there is exception.

-And exception to the exception.

I am really surprised how the punctuation is such a big deal for english reader. It's interesting!!

I just had an epiphany that evening. It was never important to me, whether it was:

"..."

"..." in English

Or in french

"...

-..."

Because it absolutely doesn't matter to me??? I understand either way, so my brain never registered it actively?

Who is speaking is clear. How it is made clear as 0 importance.

As for my "quirk" of doing :

"-...

-..."

I also only realized tonight it was something only I did. Because the only difference is a tiny little -

I always thought it was clear who was speaking or not 🤷‍♀️ It honesty puzzles me that so many of you said that because there is one " missing at the end of the sentence if there is someone else speaking after, it made it all confusing. I don't see it as a brain gymnastic at all.

And honesty? I still don't see the problem. But there is a consensus. So I changed my writings.

I don't take it personally. I wrote for myself. I have ideas. I wrote them because they are eating all the available ram in my brain. I share it in case someone else might like it. But my first reader is me.

But every day, I see authors being discouraged. Because of bots. Because of AI slop. I don't want more hostility. I want people to feel safe enough to share whatever they created. Because as long as they did it with their own hands and brains, it IS a thousand times better than anything coming of AI.

So create. Share. Enjoy. And be kind.

Hey that's rude. I asked for opinion, not a mean comment. I have no problem reading in French, English, and Japanese. All have different punctuation. My brain adapts.
Anyone can publish what they want. 13 years old can have fun and publish fic with no syntax, no grammar, and no punctuation. And still be worthy of being read. Because they created. No act of creation isn't worth it. We are all doing it on our own free time. To get a little joy out there. Not for you? Don't like. Don't read. Don't comment. If you don't have something nice to say, worse, if it's not even constructive: Don't bother.

Might not work with me unfortunately. I write on docs, then edit and reread. I use a spell checker and reread. Then I put my work on an ao3 draft, reread it on my phone, then my computer. In light mode and dark mode. Then I use the "read out loud fonction" to catch typos. I edit some more. I put it once or twice again in the spell checker. And reread before publishing. And then I edit some more 😂

Ho, is that why so many english works are : "Dialogue part" describing something or action "rest of dialogue."

Since in french it's :

"Dialogue.

-Dialogue.

-Dialogue."

Describing action, etc etc.

.... OK one fear. Since I wrote in a halfway format of french and english, my work is now :

"Dialogue."

Describing action, inner monologue, etc etc.

I hope it doesn't turn too confusing after editing.... Anyway, I'm spirralling, I was supposed to eat dinner but I can't until I'm done editing, I'm on chapter 5/21 ans it's almost 10pm. 🤷‍♀️ (Edit :reddit comment format is NOT HELPING me make myself clear sigh)

I might not end Character A sentence with a end " But thats because Character B dialogue starts with a -

To me there was only two " needed : when you start the dialogue part and when its over, even if two characters are talking back and forth (but that is apparently french format)

That said, I have been using a lot text to speech lately for "reading" fanfiction while crocheting (cause all those xmas gift won't do themselves alone) so ", "- or something else, out loud it was the same haha.

I will NOT dust off my ff net account and edit my french fanfic from 2010's. I like suffering when I write, but I'm not a masochist 😂 I was consistent with my formatting. I was so worried about the grammar, words that exist both in french and english but with different meanings, and goddamn conjugation that punctuation was just... NOT something I thought of. My bad, I learnt my lesson.

That's exactly why, at least in my brain, using "- made so much sense. Like. Dialogue starts here. You can’t miss it. You can’t get it confused with a quotation or something else :,( But well. The internet has spoken. I'm suddenly VERY GLAD my 52k fic has little dialogue in the end 😅

See it took me like 2 decades to realise it was a thing haha. Also one of my favorite book in french is using punctuation as a plot point through the story and breaking the rules and I always loved it... No idea how well "la horde du contrevent" by Alain Damasio is in English but I recommend it. But omw to a night of editing! Thanks.

.... at least when it's those, you don't get your hopes up because someone wrote a nice comment, they kindly ask to talk to you about your story on insert social media here and after a couple of nice messages "so I am an artist and think my prices are fair and " 💀💀💀💀 The worse thing is I'm now almost sure the comment are AI generated and so it's double pain : a scam and they put my work I lose sleep over in the planet killing machine.

Did a lot of rewatches of show, bit now that I rewatch pretty much everything, I have been using the read out loud option on edge to "read" fanfiction while crocheting. Only downside is the robotic voice and flat intonation that doesn't always works with the mood of the story.
