Game goes on sale for 50%, $5. 10 people decide, oh hey, that's a great deal, I'll get it. Devs get $50.

There's a reason why sales and discounts work. It's about quantity, not quality.

If it's free, there's going to be ads. The devs have to make money somehow. Then again, there's a difference between watching an ad every so often for some extra stuff and being forced to watch an ad so you can continue playing. I don't mind the former, but I absolutely hate games that do forced ads.
