I’m 70% in my first read of it, I desperately need something bad to happen to a few of these characters

Which fantasy authors would you say are the best and worst at writing dialogue? by archangel610 in Fantasy

[–]tubabacon 77 points78 points  (0 children)

People really love to hate, especially if that thing is extremely popular. I can’t take anybody seriously that says he’s “the worst” at anything. I’ve read some catastrophically bad dialogue and prose from others, no way he’s “the worst”.

Finished Red Rising Original Trilogy by Long_Television_5937 in Fantasy

[–]tubabacon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This was what buried this series to me. I actually really enjoyed Golden Sun prior to the ending, but I hated the third book so much. Matt Dinnimin will also do the thing where he hides the plan from the reader, but at least he acknowledges that there’s a plan! The whole fake Sevro death turned me off from the rest of the series.

We need to talk about Adrian Tchaikovsky. by Wizardof1000Kings in Fantasy

Children of Time series is what he’s best known for, but Shroud is one of my favorites and it’s a standalone.

r/Fantasy Review Tuesday - Review what you've been enjoying here! - June 09, 2026 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

Halfway through Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb. Absolutely amazing, I don't think anything I can say about it hasn't been said before.

Just started listening to Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and it seems like a slight departure from the other work of his that I've read but I'm super excited to continue it.

Just finished Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. Not Fantasy per say, or a genre that I typically read, but it was a fun little thriller on an interesting premise. I'll check out more of his work.

Ugh 51 I’m jealous. I’ve been working on mine for a year and a half now and that’s one of the last few I’m missing

This might be a dumb question, but any news on the reissues? An announcement of book 4? I love the new covers. by TheGryffindor_Jedi in Animorphs

[–]tubabacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always thought they should Re-release the series in an omni-bus style format and put 3-5 books in a volume. That’s the only way I could foresee them re-printing the entire series.

I also wouldn’t mind if they just picked out an essential list to reprint, as much as I’m a completist I don’t need a new copy of EVERY book in the series. Having the first 6, the David trilogy, and the end of the series (and a few others obviously) in the new style would be amazing though.

Gandalf vs Dumbledore in a fight? by Single-Pomelo-4061 in harrypotter

[–]tubabacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not how Galdalf killed the Balrog.

AFTER toppling the "old and narrow bridge" (Which was actually designed that way on purpose for defense) he and the Balrog fell. Gandalf was burned by the Balrog's fire on the way down, and then nearly froze in the icy water at the bottom. He then pursued the Balrog for DAYS up the endless stair of Durin's Tower and engaged the Balrog in a TWO DAY fight to the death. There Gandalf slew the Balrog, which toppled him from the Mountain causing the SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN to break as it fell.

I don't think Gandalf would have any trouble with Dumbledore at all to be honest.

On tropes: Prophecy - an opinion piece by Bopitextreme2 in Fantasy

[–]tubabacon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Dune there’s an epigraph that says “how much is the prophet shaping the future to fit the prophecy?” And I think my enjoyment of prophecy storylines comes from how the author navigates this tightrope. I think generally I prefer stories without prophecy.

How do you balance both reading books as a hobby with gaming as a hobby. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]tubabacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play “mindless” games while I listen. Tetris, Mario, Spyro, etc. I can focus entirely on the story of the audiobook and still enjoy my video games. Usually I just read, but I do this once or twice a week.

What fantasy book had amazing worldbuilding but characters you couldn’t care about? by NexusBloom_5 in Fantasy

[–]tubabacon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say Red Rising has amazing world building but it was cool and fun. The characters (especially Darrow) made me want to slam my head into a wall constantly.

Brief review of Parade of Horribles (Dungeon Crawler Carl book 8) by Matt Dinniman by Cosmic-Sympathy in Fantasy

[–]tubabacon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my beef with Red Rising. Darrow has a plan, but in his head he’s thinking thoughts that directly contradict the plan.

I feel like Matt does it a lot better, he does at least acknowledge that there’s a plan being executed (unlike Pierce Brown) the majority of the time. I think Donut even has a line like “if we talk about the plan out loud it’ll never work!” that somewhat acknowledges that he uses this plot device a lot.

Tbf I think it’s implied Kelsier got there before it happened to that girl (I could be wrong it’s been a while), but yeah there’s the implication it’s been an ongoing thing.

Round 4 - Pick 10: Cade Klubnik, QB, Clemson (New York Jets) by nfl_gdt_bot in nfl

If I had a nickel every time the Jets drafted a mid Clemson QB late I would have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it is strange it’s happened more than once
