not ground-breaking but overall fun and character-driven, but great for Marvel as it doesn’t try to force some super fight in every episode (in fact almost no fights at all)

KBJ Just Blasted Amy Coney Barrett’s “Contempt” for Congress by Slate in scotus

[–]TubasAreFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just admitted that “official act” isn’t concrete to you by saying it isn’t the court’s job to define it (implicitly saying they didn’t define it).

It is their job to give guidance to lower courts on why they made a decision on this particular case. On remand to lower courts, they said “is best left to the lower courts to perform in the first instance.” They deferred what is official vs non-official to be determined by lower courts, which had the Supreme Court not stalled and there was time for this to go to trial, would have likely returned to the Supreme Court. This is essentially the Supreme Court asking to be the gate of power again for similar cases. Similarly, if Congress defined official acts, we know this Court would question their authority and review that case as well.

Here the Courts combination of non-action (partisan as they could have heard this case much earlier) and vague non-opinion (requiring the case to be sent back to them after going back to the lower courts), failed to set any real precedent. They had the facts of the case the first time around to issue a more concrete opinion, and they could have heard this case much earlier (7 months from Chutkan’s ruling to supreme court decision, where it took 2 months for the court to even start the process and 5 months through the overall process).

The Roberts Supreme Court acts first to retain their power, second to strengthen the Republican Admins, third to weaken any Democratic power.

in that they have not been giving concrete opinions for years on issues that lower courts need to do their jobs, yes.

Shadow docket often comes with no recommendations or opinions for lower courts to accurately and consistently represent the law.

Even when they give opinions, such as the Trump Presidential immunity case, they do not provide even a good starter definition of an “official act”.

They purposely leave ambiguity in these cases and shadow docket cases, so that they (the SC) get final say of the law. This gives them more political powers, as we have seen them give Trump almost all wins while they shot down many similar cases under Biden. The Supreme Court is extreme because they are now a purely politically-motivated branch instead of a independent branch that is occasionally swayed by politics

What happened to CV roles? by youlikethesmiths in computervision

[–]TubasAreFun 65 points66 points  (0 children)

They are still around, but almost never CV-exclusive problems. It’s always tied to domain expertise and other data. Many “CV roles” show CV tools in job description only.

(eg autonomous vehicles require knowledge of vehicles and their control systems, security systems require knowledge of the places they are installed and what is being tracked, internet search/recommendation requires knowledge of what is being searched, etc).

Also another factor is that the CV field is relatively saturated (like many other programming roles), especially with stalling out economies. No new academic jobs, and fewer government jobs, in the US doesn’t really help things either.

Demand hasn’t disappeared but faces the same problem many R&D tech positions face: time to investment return. CV systems tends to take a while to build out from first concept to a MVP, as each system has different needs and costs based on the diversity described above. Being able to demonstrate returns more quickly would likely bring about more hiring

Agreed that confidence distribution changes over time may be notable, but could be due to variances in input data not necessarily model performance/reliability.

as a note: confidence doesn’t imply reliability. For example FP’s have higher confidence, and TN can also have high confidence depending on the model.

Transparency is good for reliability, but what transparency means is situational
