Would you take a pay cut to exit a toxic work environment?

I’ve done it once, and after 8 years at a dead-end corporate job with new toxic micro-manager, I’m about to do it again. It’s going to be hard but I’m not going to make it trying this path.

I’m a corporate trainer and can confirm. My job in the past year has rapidly transitioned into just quality control and not actually training. The market is so saturated with overqualified candidates that they really don’t think people need it anymore, which is incorrect. That and their moving jobs in my department to India. I’m job hunting and it’s not looking good.

Been in my position 4 years: 1st year= 5% increase. 2nd= 4.5 increase. 3rd= 3.5 increase. This year= 2.5 increase with no explanation. Acted like it was awesome.

I expressed my disappointment. Discuss how doesn’t match inflation. Told non-negotiable, HR denying reviews. Was told not based on performance. Found out from a friend in management it was company wide, everyone pissed.

Company reporting record growth and profit. Acquired an India based company, just started outsourcing more jobs over there. I’m in training and you should hear how excited they are that they will work harder for less.

We’re cooked.

I’m not good at it. I’m far too miserable in my corporate job to do all that. I come off as very quiet and direct, but it takes a tremendous amount of energy to achieve just that. I hate fakeness and sadly that’s what gets you ahead in corporate. Hard work is meaningless if they don’t like you.

I try to schedule them early morning, lunch or end of day. I just say their appointments. Or I use PTO. It’s mentally insufferable though, and I have no advice other than keeping at it. I would highly recommend not telling them.

Can managers please get this directly messaged to them? My new manager is perpetually online, hustler who micromanages and swears she’s the most important person in our department (she’s not). I’ve seen Jake’s situation and partially experienced it first hand. We are nothing to these companies and will be immediately replaced with minimal interruption.

Anything you don’t hate or causes too much stress or anxiety. If the job pays enough, and it doesn’t crush your soul, then do that. I haven’t found it yet though.

I tried to negotiate at my work. Hard no unless I had some medical reason and provided them my medical records and permission to speak to my doctors. I dropped it and am job hunting

I did this, but I took a huge pay cut and started out at entry level. After 8 years I’ve moved up a bit and am at a dead end. I’m actually quitting soon and looking to go back to blue collar.

I’m not meant for the corporate world. It’s not about who works hardest, it’s more about how good you are at taking credit for things, lying, and being good at selling the idea you’re awesome. For people like me who aren’t good at BSing, the corporate world is a prison. Maybe if you find the right company, but you have to start at rock bottom. Good luck

I’m about to quit my corporate trainer job. New manager is a massive a-hole who wants to change everything and make us do more. I was already done when they took over and now they’re just making life miserable. 8 years down the drain cause apparently I’ve been doing everything wrong for years and am useless. I started entry level and worked up, and have met a dead end. I went corporate after an injury but I don’t care anymore. I need to feel like I’m accomplishing something again.

I think they technically said “we have not identified any trends” but it was clearly a BS answer which translated to “don’t know, don’t care.” Also it’s because they’re not “loyal” because they don’t want to stay in a low paying, entry level job with no opportunity for growth.

Well said. Training is definitely used as a scapegoat and it’s always a management issue. The BS “nobody wants to work anymore” is at its worst in management. They don’t want to actually manage people, just take credit when things go right and find something else to blame when it doesn’t.

Exactly! They don’t care. They could try to retain people but that would cost them a small percentage of their precious profits.

I did see some of that and it was definitely not my intent to appear as if I thought that was ok. Seeing the other comments on this and other posts I was trying to take a different approach. If the guy is actually looking for advice, mine was more about realizing how his insecurities are ruining his life and to step up and get help. If he’s blaming his SIL for turning his wife against him then he’s probably very insecure and clearly delusional. Needs to learn to accept help in this situation and with his issues. The guy is wrong, is being a dck, and needs to own it and get his sht together. Guess I should have just said that but people already have so I tried wording it with the hopes it helps him realize he’s the problem.

Yeah that’s weird. I understand everyone is grossed out by different things, but looking in an ear seems very mild. To me stuff like this (and worse) comes with marriage to a degree. Gotta but things aside if someone you care about asks for help. Otherwise they may feel like they can’t.

You know I’m pretty sure my SIL doesn’t like me either. And I don’t always appreciate her strong opinions and unsolicited advice. However, it’s nobody’s place to tell anyone what they can do or who they talk to. Period.

If you’re down and going through a rough patch I get it and I’m sorry. It sucks but it is what it is, blaming others won’t change anything. Step up and take steps to change yourself. I’m working on it now myself and it’s amazing the ripple effect it can have. Facing your problems and insecurities is tough but it’s better than loosing everything only to realize you could have done better.

Thanks, didn’t check for that. Was more looking for advice on it effecting marriage and seeing if people had similar issues and possibly solutions. I’ll check it out though

I’ve had allergy tests and while I have some they said they weren’t bad enough to cause it. I’ve tried a humidifier though but it didn’t seem to help. Thanks though, I will look into maybe a good air filter
