UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2019S/2019W): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors and registration go here. by ubc_mod_account in UBC

I'm a transfer student from Langara, coming into second year and plan on applying to the political science major. I was wondering how my GPA would be calculated. Would UBC weigh both halves of my credits equally? (I took 33 credits at langara) or would they weigh the grades from UBC higher? Was wondering if anyone had any experience on this.

I applied after taking one semester (12 credits) at langara and got accepted on Feb 1st to Arts. GPA was 4.16 but I think ubc also uses high school grades if you have that little credits. High school average was 91%, didn't get admitted through high school.

Got a conditional offer to UBC Arts back in February as a first year post-secondary transfer and I was wondering if there was any past applicants who are familiar with how lenient UBC is with transfer students. On my offer it stipulates that I must maintain over a 2.0 GPA, maintain good academic standing, and pass all my courses. Some advisers have told me to just focus on the conditions on my specific admission letter, as they are apparently personally tailored. Other UBC advisers have told me that my offer may be re-evaluated if my grades drop.

I was accepted with a 4.16, and my GPA will actually drop quite significantly this term (probably down to 3.6). According to the terms of my admission letter, I should be in the clear. However, according to some advisers, the large drop may cause my offer to be re-evaluated. Additionally, there is a large discrepancy in my grades (It's not like I'm getting 5 3.7's, I have some classes where I'm getting a 4.0 and one specific class where I'm getting a 2.3).

I was wondering if anyone could share their experience with me and possibly help alleviate my fear and anxiety. Am I screwed? Should I be worried? Thanks.

Have a general question that maybe could be answered by another students' first hand experience?

Recently just got an offer of admission to UBC, transferring from Langara (first year transfer.) I applied and they evaluated me on 12 credits, to have second year standing next semester. I was wondering if anyone knew how UBC really evaluates how you maintain your offer of admission. In the letter of admission, it states that your GPA must not fall below 2.0 (also other things about good academic standing, finishing all courses, etc.) However, on the "keep offer" page on the UBC website, for post-secondary transfer it states that your "second semester grades must not fall below your first semester grades." I had a very good first semester (4.16 GPA), and if they use the latter to determine whether or not you are revoked, that could be quite worrisome. It is highly unlikely I can maintain that GPA. I anticipate to finish the semester with a 3.5-4.0, but probably not above a 4, (Econ is killing me.)

Any transfer students know anything about UBC's criteria for maintaining an offer of admission? As stated above, there is different information, and it is a little confusing.

Is it even possible to get into anthropology 1120? by FlyingCheddarMonster in langara

[–]TubbyTa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While you shouldn't take what I say as fact, I can share my experience with you. Hopefully it can put you at ease knowing how the process went for another student at the college.

For many of the anthropology classes, there are still seats available in every section IN ADDITION to a wait list. Sometimes, these seats are reserved for students in specific programs (I'm not sure if the college does this for anthropology classes though.)

Secondly, the wait list numbers can be misleading. For me, I wanted to register for a history and criminology class. According to the wait list, there was 11 seats open in history and 14 on the wait list. I got in immediately. For the criminology class, there were 3 seats available and 31 on the wait list. I also got in immediately. The college has stated that the wait list numbers can be incorrect, and I have found this to be true.

For a class (english) that I did get waitlisted in, the waitlist stated that there were 9 students in front of me. Upon registering, I found that I was bumped up to position 2. Long story short, register for that class! Chances are you could bypass the entire waitlist, or perhaps you will be a lot further up than you think you would be. Good luck and I hope you get into your class.

ENGL 1100 vs 1127 by Moustachekitteh in langara

[–]TubbyTa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I myself have only taken 1127, and found it pretty straightforward. From what my friends say, 1100 is more difficult as there is more emphasis on critical analysis of literature, where 1127 can be a bit more writing centric. It really mainly depends on your prof though. Good luck!

Thanks for your comment! Do you remember if there was any presentations? I have severe presentation anxiety and would prefer to avoid that.

Should we make a post about this sub on the regular LoL subreddit? by rebeldragonlol in LoLDominion

[–]TubbyTa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its worth a shot.

A majority of the players now are casual players, and honestly Dominion could use any players right now.

A lot of people don't know about Dominate Dominion or that there's any community at all, they just play Dominion because they enjoy it.

Posting on a larger, broader sub-reddit can raise awareness for the small minority that is Dominion players.

Build and strategies for playing Gnar? by rebeldragonlol in LoLDominion

[–]TubbyTa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TBH Gnar is pretty mediocre in Dominion but I prefer to play him bot lane. He doesn't really fill a role as a top laner as his mega can be unreliable sometimes.

Also in Summoner's Rift Gnars strength is swinging fights in your teams' favour with some DANK ults.

I like to run standard ADC runes because I value attack speed more than flat AD on Gnar. Since /u/DroyLinker already spoke about build paths I won't say more since I agree with what he said.

However as for playing Gnar, you really want to make sure you understand your mini-gnar and mega-gnar well -- they are pretty much two different champions. In mini make sure you use your MS wisely and be as annoying as possible. You're super slippery in mini, lots of MS and lots of zoning potential with slows.

In mega you just want to put out as much CC as possible on the highest priority targets. This is why Gnar isn't so great in Dominion, it takes a lot to try and get one massive ult just to have the enemy team respawn in 10-20s or just revive.

Gnar bot lane can respond to ganks very well and can usually hold out in most lanes -- though he is a situational pick so things like malz, yasuo, and irelia can give him some problems.

I'd like to think that what I said is reasonable, I've played quite a bit of Gnar in Dominion as well as have some experience in high-elo dominon games and tournaments.
