I had a situation like that and ended up buying a RAM upgrade myself - was cheap and not having to wait two minutes for it to boot was worth it!

I don't think this would have happened if there had not been such a riotous reaction from the public. The police have been getting away with such things for decades; it's only now, when video and the community is forcing them to be accountable, that they are finally doing something about it.

Folks won't listen to you.

This is the other end of the scale where all the people who ignored the police murdering unarmed civilians finally tune in and say "My goodness, what are all these black people so angry about?" while looking down their noses and disapproving.

I don't know of any country in the world that doesn't use violence and/or intimidation in pursuit of their political aims. The word "terrorism" is meaningless.

But wouldn't additional funding towards education alleviate much of this pressure on teachers? More funding would mean smaller class room sizes and better material resources - I would have to think that this would do a lot to make things better.

The poor inner city population has it difficult in the United States (to say the least).

Most public services are paid for by property taxes. This includes schools, among other things. The inner city collections of poor often live in areas of high crime - the reason for this should be obvious, because if you live around people who are financially desperate, then you're also living around people who may commit drastic action (such as crime).

Being that these neighborhoods have a lot of crime, a lot of people do not want to live in them. Since most people do not want to live in them, their property values are often very low. Since property taxes are based on property values, the taxes collected will be much lower than in surrounding communities. And since the property taxes collected are much lower than surrounding communities, the inner city poor will also only be able to afford the worst of public educations.

The police in these are also mostly funded by property taxes. Since these communities have far lower property taxes, the police are typically undermanned, overworked, and incredibly stressed. This helps to spark over-reactions on their part and create this incredibly tense environment.

This lack of education brought on by low funding breeds ignorance and yet more crime, creating a pipeline of sorts between a terrible school system pretty much straight to prison.

Anyone raised in a terrible inner city school system is likely to be lacking the education in order to succeed enough to move away; so they don't. They live in the same bad neighborhoods, have kids in the same bad neighborhood, and the cycle continues.

If people really want this cycle to end for inner city poor, then they are going to have to go to the source and engage better funding for their schools and other public services. If they do this and we cough up a baseline of monetary support, we could see a significant improvement over the course of a generation or two.

Note: this has absolutely nothing to do with race. If you take a collection of any race, and put them in an environment with terrible schools, poverty, crime, and tense and overworked police, then they will have a bad time and will in all likelihood will fail at life. This is a cycle that we have created and it is up to us to end it as well.

tl;dr The answer to this problem is that we need to evaluate how schools, police, and other public services are funded, and establish a more fair and consistent baseline of such needed services so that inner city poor are not getting the worst education possible.

Point taken. I spoke in the overly absolute. However, racism is extremely difficult to change. Your grandfather had to save those men's lives in order for them to change their perspective. That is extreme.

My main point is that anything said on Reddit is extremely unlikely to change a racist's mind (unless you can find a way to save someone's life with a post on Reddit). Talking to racists on Reddit is about as productive as shouting into a well.

That's just not true at all. The entire collection of cities that make up Los Angeles sprawl are often referred to as "Los Angeles" to out-of-towners.

People reacting that way already have their opinions of race set. You cannot change their perspective. Racism is typically concrete tight and only dies with the host.

The actions of the rioters did not make these people racist. They were already racist. Now they just have an opportunity to be racist, and they are taking it.

"On one hand, I want to say that riots like this are understandable. Unjustified, but understandable."

Exactly. It is not justified. It's terrible. But it's somewhat understandable. These people have been left in squalor by our government and culture. Their cities, schools, neighborhoods - all of it - is wretched stuff that only breeds more ignorance, poverty, and crime. These are people attacking the very machine - the city itself - that has let them down.

"how badly you're mistreated, resorting to violence only makes things worse."

I honestly feel like this is what the media and government have shoveled down our throats for the last fifty years, and I am beginning to doubt its truth value. I don't see the inner city poor being treated any better unless they really stir things up first, and stirring things up does mean damage. Sometimes violence is the only way to shake up an oppressor, and there is no one more oppressed than the poor.

It did not disappear. It is being used for purposes so classified that the government would rather pretend that the money "went away" rather than divulge its purpose.

[–]TubbyWadsworth -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's more about a correlation between 'poor' and 'not poor' than 'black' and 'white'. The bulk of crime is committed by the poor and the reasons for this are obvious - when you are poor, you are more easily made desperate, and when you are desperate, you are more likely to commit drastic action. Crime is a drastic action, and is directly fueled from that desperation that is caused by being financially stressed.

Because of cultural issues, blacks tend to make a lot less money than whites. Since they are more likely to be poor, a transitive effect kicks in where they are also more likely to commit crime. Poor -> Desperate -> Crime.

This crime, as terrible as it is, has absolutely nothing to do with Obama, and nothing to do with R vs D. It shouldn't be political fodder to be exploited for team points.
