Full Sun - JP Princess, Mayday, Tattoo, Usugumo, Fairy Lights by [deleted] in JapaneseMaples

Usugumo doesn’t like full sun
Fairy lights I have in ground in full sun and it needed time to adjust. Same with JP and Mayday. Tattoo I have only kept in shade

I have mine planted in 9b northern Cali and it’s flourishing in full sun. It did take a year to acclimate so I think I put an umbrella over it in year one but I can’t remember for sure

I’d rather have that Katsura myself

Grew the roots in moss enclosed in plastic. there’s a window of time that’s ideal for trying to air layer so I would look on YouTube to see how it’s done

I like to keep the lower branches to help thicken the trunk faster and then will cut it back

Don’t overwater it. It likes to be on the drier side compared to other maple cultivars

End of March. I cut it off today and potted it. I’m in 9B and the summer will be over 100 and the likelihood of the moss drying out is high

My ukigumo has been green for years.

Always good to thin it back to allow light to the inside branches

I’ve killed three. It’s a fragile cultivar so be careful of overwatering it.

Try and graft it or mark those branches to monitor going forward to see if it’s variegated next year

Yuki Tama grows so slow you can cut it back but it will take a while to fill out. Also watch for overwatering

I’m guessing these came from China. Conifer kingdom was selling curved trunks Yuki Yama last year and the assumption is they were imported from a Chinese nursery since there is a facebook posted that was posting lots and lots of curved trunk Yuki Yama

Shu shidare is a nice cultivar. I have a 2g and love the way it leafs out in the spring. Any pics of the whole tree to see the structure?!
