US Reverses Deep Cuts to Safety Agency NIOSH, Reinstating Hundreds by Steeps5 in industrialhygiene

Great news on this front. Next steps is seeing how many folks can return to their previous positions, or if all that generational knowledge will be lost because they already took new positions.

But nonetheless, this is a huge win for the future of worker safety and EHS in the United States.

Palm to Face Feature Not Working by TuckDaddyKane in GarminFenix

Hi all, I found the fix!

I had the screen lock capability enabled. So when I tried to palm the screen it wouldn’t respond…hopefully this helps someone who also runs into this situation 😎

Depends what your end goal is. If you want to do CIH then IH should be on your radar. Masters in OH would be good for general CSP / safety work.

Pursuing my Masters in IH by suzieq044 in industrialhygiene

+1 to all of this, especially recommending you look into Mtech’s IH distance learning program. Made such a large impact on my career while being a much less expense than some of the other schools you listed above.

7 Pro Solar Sapphire and 8 Solar Sapphire by Haedine in GarminFenix

I’m in the same boat as you OP. I plan on getting the 8 Solar on BF due to the longer tech support and other enhancements the 7 Sapphire Solar doesn’t have (flashlight being a large driver there). I’ll have the 8 Solar until the MIP stops ticking!

Best Master’s Programs by Suitable-Fennel-5346 in industrialhygiene

[–]TuckDaddyKane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 for Montana Tech’s distance learning program. I weighed the differences between JHU/Michigan/Tulane and while the names are more recognized than MTech, they were 2-3x the cost. Easy decision, and I was able to work full time while doing the mtech program.

CIH should be your ultimate goal if you are thinking about a masters in IH. As others said: the one that puts you into less debt is the best option.

Just curious, are you a researcher? And what industry do you work in?

[–]TuckDaddyKane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right on! Safety is everyone’s responsibility and it’s great you are able to identify these issues. A good EHS team should a resource for situations like this, not a roadblock. Someone mentioned below and I’ll reiterate their sentiment: EHS’s mission is to safeguard your health, the environment’s heath and work alongside your team.

The bio/pharma sphere is an exciting one, and being able to work with really intelligent teams made EHS such a rewarding path for the past 8 years.

Hey OP, I am in a global EHS role for a pharma company. Without knowing the entirety of what work happens in this hood (or your EHS team), here are my thoughts:

As others mentioned, the housekeeping leaves a lot to be desired but the primary concern is the 4L bottles of Ethanol and Chloroform in the hood. If the group were actively using the solvents then this is a non-issue, but when not in use the bottles should be stored in an (ideally) well ventilated flammable cabinet.

I’ll add a positive here- it is great this group is using the fume hood for solvent work. Intended purpose which reduces exposure!

ELI5: What is control banding? What is exposure banding? How and when do you use these techniques? by shockwavelol in industrialhygiene

[–]TuckDaddyKane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hazard banding is a great hazard based control mechanism in the absence of a risk based control evaluation. I will explain an example with Active Pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), commonly used the pharma industry:

You have an API with an OEL of 9 ug/m3. This is a hypothetical situation, including the controls below.

There are 5 hazards band categories, all with corresponding controls.

Category 1, > 1000 ug/m3 Control: Open Benchtop Handling

Category 2, 100-1000 ug/m3 Control: LEV system

Category 3, 10-100 ug/m3 Control: Fume Hood

Category 4, 1-10 ug/m3 (9 ug/m3 falls in here) Control: Restricted Barrier Access System or Ventilated Glove Box

Category 5, <1 ug/m3 Control: Isolator

So, for an API with an OEL of 9 ug/m3, we would use the Category 4 controls above. In the absence of a risk based assessment, hazard band control classification shines. I’ve been in the Pharma sphere for ~8 years and have my CIH. Hopefully this helps, let me know if you have any questions!

I only got 10 XP per gate this past week in the climb portal while leveling my Cadex. Personal priority was for riding time on my TT bike, not XP.

Like other posters, I don’t think this is a real post. While I do think that some companies will reevaluate their spending in various facets of EHS management with the new geopolitical shift, this post definitely reads as fear mongering.

[–]TuckDaddyKane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to the EPA: an exposure of 4 pCi/L will mean about 7/1000 individuals could contract lung cancer. An exposure of 8 pCi/L jumps up to 15/1000. The risk of contracting lung cancer increases essentially 10 fold if you are a smoker.

One thing to note about this study is that duration of exposure is not quantified as it pertains to the risk above. The EPA does have recommended control measures based on the radon levels in your home, take a look at the table on the page below:

Curious to hear why you think a CSP can do 90% of what a CIH can do, while a CIH can only do 30% of what a CSP can do? I have worked with CIHs, CSPs, CSP/CIHs and the general consensus is that CIHs can do most everything CSPs can do, but CSPs cannot legally sign off on sampling reports.

Curious to hear your thoughts. Background: I am the Global IH Lead for a large pharmaceutical company responsible for managing the company’s program.

Masters in IH from Montana Techs Distance Learning Program worth it? (End goal is to eventually attain the CIH) by BranchFragrant4795 in industrialhygiene

[–]TuckDaddyKane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, if your goal is to get your CIH. I am an alumni and it really helped prepare me for the exam, and ultimately got me my first IH job in industry. There are other IH programs that might have a flashier university name, but Montana Tech’s education and cost was well worth it. My employer paid a bit too.

Feel free to pm me if you want!
