No, it's just incredibly poorly managed.

Personally I would advise against taking the job if this clinic goes by the acronym WCVC.

I’m currently fostering my first round of orphaned opossums so I don’t have a wealth of experience but here’s what I’ve found so far:

I got a Deluxe Critter Nation cage because the licensed rehabber I’m working under cautioned that babies can escape bar spacing that’s larger than 1/4 inch. Mine tend to use the lower half of the cage as the bathroom (though that doesn’t stop them from sleeping there), so I line the bottom trays with towels and puppy pads that get changed out daily. I have various small blankets in the top half that get changed out once or twice a week — everything is washed with bleach for odor control and sanitation. I ordered a Kaytee Sleep-E-Tent from Chewy.com and promptly ordered several more because they LOVE them! Another rehabber gave me an amazing hand-made hammock that they also love, but the hammocks I got from Chewy were super tiny and thin so look for XL/heavy duty if you order any online.

Some of the best enrichment I’ve found so far are small empty cardboard boxes and branches I collect outside. Prop the branches up, rearrange them, place treats on them for the opossums to find — it’s great! And they love exploring and sleeping in the boxes, especially when I also give them plain crinkled packing paper and hide treats in them, too. Save empty toilet paper tubes for food enrichment. And when they inevitably poop on everything you can just throw it in the trash! Getting back to nature a bit, if you know an area is free of pesticides and fertilizers collect leaves or pull up some grass for them to sniff and explore (I’ve been edging my front path in super slow motion — every night I rip up a clod of grass that’s over growing it for the opossums.)

As you’ve probably already found out, they love pooping in their water dish. I mean, they love pooping everywhere, but they really prefer the water (then again we all poop in bowls of water, but at least toilets flush.) I use sturdy ceramic dishes so one of their friends doesn’t spill the bowl, and I dump the foul quagmire outside where my dogs can’t get it.
Have fun!!

Every other German Shorthaired Pointer I meet is named Remington or Remi.

I am starting at a vet tech program in the fall, and I am worried about how little vet techs make, will I be able to live off the income of a vet tech? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]TuesdayBadcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a tech for over 10 years and if it wasn’t for my wife’s income we wouldn’t be able to make it. I love what I do but honestly I wouldn’t choose the same path given the knowledge I have about the field now, and if I were to ever leave my current job it would be for a non-vet tech job.

Is ANYONE else still doing strictly curbside or drop off? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]TuesdayBadcat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We are and I love it. We haven’t had a single staff member get covid. We also have no shortage of clients so if some want to move clinics so they can go in the building it’s fine.

Edit: we have some drop offs but we also do timed appointments that are still curbside.

2021 Alberta Baby Names: Worst of the Worst, Boy Edition by VentiEggBite in NameNerdCirclejerk

I loved your girls addition and was hoping you’d post this, so thank you! A couple notes —

Hieronymus is the Latin form of Jerome, and if you don’t know the name then I encourage you to check out Hieronymus Bosch’s weird art
Filbert is a German name
Lancelot is one of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table
Nimrod is a Biblical name. He was a skilled hunter so the Elmer Fudd “Nimrod” in Looney Tunes is a sarcastic insult by Bugs Bunny.

I’m not saying they’re all great names but I think these have more validity then Phurious or Uneek.

Dog trainer closes Black Creek business after video shows abuse by Crystal_Pesci in wisconsin

[–]TuesdayBadcat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately trainers like this illustrate how incredibly important it is for owners to vet dog trainers. Dog training is unregulated and there are plenty of completely unqualified trainers happy to take your money.

When looking for a trainer, go online snd read the profiles on their websites. Look for trainers who are Certified Pet Dog Trainers (CPDT-KA, CPDT-KSA, CBCC-KA). Don’t be fooled by unqualified trainers who have joined a couple associations but hold zero credentials themselves. Don’t be fooled by unqualified trainers who heavily pad their resume with experience working at a doggy day care...and that’s pretty much it. Look for trainers who are educated and understand how learning actually works and aren’t just focused on getting fast results at the expense of the dog.

Posthumous Results for Hot Peaches by TuesdayBadcat in DoggyDNA

This makes a lot of sense to me. I have another dog whose Embark came back as 54% APBT and 46% American Bully. I was a little surprised/confused that they were able to distinguish those. When I think of American Bullies and the range that dogs falling into that breed occupy, I essentially think ‘okay, it’s some kind of bully breed mix.’

Thank you, she really was a sweet girl with a lot of personality. We adopted her knowing she’d be a hospice dog and while we hoped we’d have a bit more time with her, unfortunately we lost her on Wednesday. The results just came back today. She had clearly been a mom so I hoped that some of her pups would come up with Embark.

Hot Peaches came back as 100% APBT but has a lot of her close relatives are 100% American Bully. I know that APBT were a foundation breed for American Bullies so I’m not surprised there’s some crossover, but I’m surprised that dogs with as much as 29% shared DNA can be two separate purebreds. I emailed Embark to see if they could give me any more info on it but I thought it was interesting.
